This was gottton off of autoroute so not sure how accurate, but I am sure you can see the skid marks on the island.  ;D

Magny Cours is:-
N 46.51.51.02
E 3.09.50.07

Elevation 719 ft

(Google Earth again)

I've checked, and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich is  indeed at 0 degrees of latitude, so it's reasonably accurate.

No Problem.

Halfway along the South Eastern side of HA there is a roundabout off which comes the Avenue Antares, which leads past the parking antares to the Mulsanne straight.

Lat 47.95629 N
Long 0.22118 E

47.57.21.87N
0.13.14.68E

Hmmmm, this poses a question of accurancy.

00.01,00 = 1 nautical mile. A nautical mile is longer than a statute mile, so an nm is not far short of 2km

Therefore they must be two seperate roundabouts 38.5miles apart or 77km!!!!!

As you can tell I have a bit of seafarer in me ( Ive heard most seaman jokes). sh*t, I've opened a can of worms here!

No Lat 47.95629 N  47.95629 Degrees North.  Or 47 point 95629 Degrees.
0.95629  Degress is 57.38 Minutes Or 57 point 38 Minutes.
0.38 Minutes is 22.64 Seconds.
so Lat 47.95629 N  Is  Lat 47.57.22.64

So 47.57.21.87N is pretty close to 47.57.22.64N.

I note that someome noted "i've checked, and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich is  indeed at 0 degrees of latitude, so it's reasonably accurate."

0 deg lat is the Equator.  I think they mean Long.  :)

This all sounds very technical :o

0.95629  Degress is 57.38 Minutes Or 57 point 38 Minutes.
0.38 Minutes is 22.64 Seconds.

Am I missing something here?

Calcs should be based on 60.

1 deg Lat = 60 mins = 360 nautical miles
1 Min Lat = 60 secs = 1 nautical mile

Do not measure Longitude by scaling L/R or E/W, use vertical scale using Latitude.

In writing the possition down it must be accurate, otherwise how are the Rescue Services to find you?

GPS systems are not that accurate although sometimes they can record your possition with 10m. It all depends on US military involvements, ie, they reduce channels available.

I accept that the Lat/Long possitions may have been missinterpreted/ missrepresented.
From the figures shown, there is still a 38.5 nm difference.

However, I concede to the fact that I do rely on GPS when on open water but I do check occasionally with more mundane instruments such as a sextant etc. BUT NOT IN MY FRIGGING CAR. Can you imagine what the fuz will think?

I'll have another go.
47.57.21.87N  47 degrees 57 minutes and 21.8 seconds North.  I think we both agree that.
It's in the form  DD.MM.SS.ss

Now  Lat 47.95629 N  is in the form  DD.ddddd

See http://openev.sourceforge.net/app/preferences.html  I'm not just making this up.

I think you are saying there    47.95629 - 47.57.21.87 = 38.5

But you not subtracting like from like.

Half a degree is 30 minutes.
Now we can write half as 1/2 degree,  0.5 Degrees or 30 Minutes.
So 0.5 Degrees = 60 minutes x 0.5 = 30 Minutes.
Therefore  0.95629 Degrees = 60 minutes x 0.95629 = 57.3774 Minutes

Now we have 0.3774 Minutes
So Again we have.
60 Seconds x 0.3774 = 22.64 Seconds.

So we have 47 Degrees 57 Minutes and 22.64 Seconds.   So pretty close.

I think you are all correct. Since the alterations here the Houx Annexe roundabout is 1 mile round now ;D
