Title: Friday night DfH party, a plead for help!
Post by: Paddy_NL on April 11, 2007, 11:11:47 pm
Drinking for Holland have a slight problem for the Friday night party; we have no band! :o

I have been in touch with Malcolm -the manager to the Flying Baguettes- and was told that Fred -their drummer- can't make it this year to Le Mans. As a consequence the other guys of the band have decided not to perform this year, basically taking a break on the Friday night for the first time in a few years. I can fully understand and appreciate their decision, but -as you can understand- we have a slight problem now.

I have been in contact with JPChenet over this, and he came up with some ideas. Team Zarse might be able to help out a little. We guess the nicest would be if we would have a few different people who could play during the  night. That way everybody gets a break, and it would be interesting to see some differerent music styles go by.
We're basically looking for Blues & Rock 'n Roll, but the majority of the Dutch never seem to mind to go a bit rougher and get some ear pounding too.

So basically, we'd like to ask for your help; who would like to play guitar, bass guitar, sing or play drums? You will need to bring your own instrument, even though we might be able to give a little help with a basic drum kit. Malcolm is very helpfull by providing the basic PA set, however we could do with some personal amps if you could provide.
A drummer seems quite important, as well as a singer. JPC probably already knows a few guitar players, even though I think you can never have enough of them (rythem+lead+bass).

Please PM me if you're interested. Your help would be very much apreciated.

Thanks from all of us at DfH,
Paddy

Thanks Andy. Hopefully a drummer will step forward - my real fear is there will be none, and so we have to work with a drum computer.
Hopes are at a high now! :D

Paddy,
I know a pro band who could be up for this, - if they are, would you be able to fit them in on your patch?- getting tickets for MB is not easy now.

All is open for discussion. Even though I do believe all our tickets are taken by vehicles, we could still try to do something...

ps. JPC would be the big winner with karaoke, of course! ;)

Karaoke was already proposed on our forum, and some of our gang weren't all to much rejoicing it....

But as I'm the one who's arranging gear......

That just confirms what I knew already, the Dutch are a cultured nation with good taste. :)
Unlike the Japanese who invented it.

At the risk of being shot by some people: I hated Karaoke ... but after living for 5 years in Asia I came away in love with it, goes perfectly together with loads of alcohol... ;D ;D ;D

Paddy,

Your need for a drummer may be solved, have you spoken with Smokie? I think he is presently on a cruise in the Canaries but if I remember correctly he told me that he used to play drums as a kid and that he wants to get back into it. Problem could be that he`s a bit rusty and I think that he does not have his own drumset, then you wouldn`t need a drummer anymore just a drumset ???
.....on second thought, maybe karaoke would be easier on the ears ;D

Hi Paddy
He may not thank me for pointing this out, but my bro, Dave H is very accomplished on the skins.
However, by Friday night, he's usually off his tits, or hospitalised - or both...

Thanks a lot for all your reactions so far. At the moment we have two potential chances on having a full size band on stage, and we're hoping on at least one of them. If we do, then we think it might be fun if there could be some sort of jamming session before a gig.
Will keep all concerned posted, I hope asap...

Paddy,

I played drums until i was about 21 then turned it in - I've still got my kit, but getting it down could be an issue unless someone with a large amount of space can tip up with something?

I'm also a pretty good singer, although blues isn't my forte, I can manage most rock anthems, a few random songs, and will happily turn my hand to anything with a guitar and drumkit backing!  I even have my own microphone...if that classes as an instrument!!

Let me know if there's anything I can do....
:D

Cheers Brad! Like I said before - we would be willing to purchase & bring a standard drum kit just for the venue, maybe bring a few smaller items to personalize would be the best option. Will keep in touch, no doubt...

Back from the cruise - wow, what a holiday!! Would throughly recommend it...

George, the story was that I had a drum kit for about 6 months or less when I was 16. Sold it to finance the Lambretta. Never any good at it then, not likely to be much good now, but I want an electronic kit just to prove me right.

So I'm no use to you Paddy, but good luck with the real band!!!

I can bring personalised items, but its been a while since I've picked up sticks for anything other than messing around!  If it ends up going down the road of Dave Harper playing drums then I guess bringing cymbals etc from the states is unlikely. In that situation I can probably help with hardware and cymbals....

Microphone is an Audio Technica - similar to a Shure SM58 but perhaps a little tiny bit sharper for voice stuff...if its any use i'll whack that in the boot...

Have you thought about rehearsals? Could become a bit of a shambles, or a short set if the band only knows 3 songs between them!?!?

Thanks Brad. JPChenet had some ideas of how we could fill this in, and I believe he can lift this off. Had a chat with him last Friday morning, and his ideas sounded great. I think it would be best to let him take it from here, basically have a few guitar players (rythem, lead and bass), and if you'd like to do the drums, that should be grand. JPC was also talking about how to get a drum kit over in one of the vans, and we can borrow the amp of Mal (thanks Mal! ;)).

I want to thank all those who tried to get a complete band together, there was even a rumour of trying to get Mud to the DfH-pitch! ;D

We'll contact you soon Brad, and thanks for the offer! See you at Le Mans 8)

Paddy,

As said before you are welcome to our amp, speakers leads etc. However if your guitar players have their own amps as well it will boost the sound. We also assume you will need a couple of mikes so we are going to buy a couple for you to use. The guys are understandably a bit wary of loaning their top quality mikes that they use for their regular gigs.

We will also be availabe to help you set it all up if required.

My son " who is very nice now" has offered me the loan of his drum kit. lt is made by Session and is a beginners kit. (may be a bit of use)

It has Snare, bass, 2x high toms, and a floor drum. A high hat and a crash symbol. (means nowt to me).

At the present I'm aiming to travel down in my very old Landy Disco, but its off the road at present. But if I do I can get the kit in the back off it.

The only problem, is if I/we damage it, I have to replace the damaged goods and he's talking about compensation (yea right!  ;) )

Paddy let me know if this any of use.

By the way - I am tone and music challenged, so I can't play

The spirit of Club Arnage is alive and well... in the face adversity we will conquer!

Maybe we should think of an anthem song for the set the eppitemises (sp?) the whole ethos of everyone doing something for someone where they can?

My suggestion - get by with a little help from my friends...but I'm sure there are better ones?

Right, time for a small update.

JPChenet has really been working on this, and he's got quite a few people together to do a gig. Spoke to him last night, and they are even gonna have rehearsals. It all sounds very promising! 8)
I'm hoping Nopanic's offer for the drum kit still stands, otherwise I'll have to get one off ebay for this venue. All costs covered for damaged skins etc. of course!

On our side, Dirk has been putting his efforts in too! Yesterday I spoke to the manager of the Dutch band which will perform on our stage as second act: www.vinniesvice.nl
These guys look very promising and we're looking forward to have these guys on stage!

We'll have a different stage this year, ground level and half the height as last year.

Please note we'll have wrist bands for entrance this year. Free to those we know, just come and pick 'em up during the week at our pitch. We just want to try to keep a little control on those entering our pitch.

Thanks to all who have been trying to get something together for us. This is really apreciated!

Well that's good - a Blues band...I'm a pretty terrible blues singer and percussionist, so that means we can stick to the good ol' rock n' roll!

Requests encouraged - I've sent a list to Mark, but its not exclusive - it is however quite varied, so assuming none of it is technically above us all, I reckon we should have something for everyone...

I haven't picked up a set of sticks in anger for a good while, so I'm going to embark on getting my kit out, and building the muscles up in my arms, which last time took 9 years to get right....I'm going to try and get them back in 4 weeks....
Uh oh... :)

Oh and if anyone CAN offer transport for my kit from Wokingham to Le-Mans, then I'm quite happy to use my own gear...that way if I wreck it, it's mine and not some poor kids!

NoPanic - Drop me a PM and I'll let you know what I can bring down myself, that saves you bringing absolutely everything - some things are pretty personal on a kit (pedal, high hat etc) so I'm quite happy to bring things like that...its getting the space together to bring an entire kit that's the problem!

Also - my kit is in cases, which you might want to borrow in order to transport your kit safely (saves hardware going through skins etc)

Well I've done it - I've got my kit down, and started the process of re-teaching myself how to play the drums....its been a while, I'm a bit rusty, and I have next to no stamina in my arm muscles, but a couple of weeks re-visiting the rudimentary stuff should see me able to at least hold a beat....

The neighbours however are less than impressed...since I last used my kit we've had wooden flooring put in my room - what was once a loud drumkit, is now reaaaaally loud.....

Very excited about this...Now if mark could feed back on the set list I sent him, that would help me work out what I need to be able to play!!

Time for an update from my side as well. First of all I cannot tell how all of us at DfH apreciate the efforts of all those involved.

This is the way things are provisionally planned for the Friday night, we can only hope all will a-sort-of go as planned:
20.00 - 22.00 MarkJPC and Band
22.00 - 22.30 Charity Auction with Team Items from Racing for Holland and Spyker
22.45 - 01.00 Vinnies Vice (www.vinniesvice.nl)

Most of you can probably remember last year's gig with the Flying Baguettes, and I'm trying to point out the position of the stage (which was actually the scaffolding on top of the elevated stretch). It seemed that I wasn't the only one to think the scaffolding is nice to watch cars go by, but is not really suited to have a gig on. First there was lack of space, and second there was no railing and third it was too close to the slope for comfort. Something had to change, in my opinion. The stage should be lower and down to the grounds where we are.

Aparently there are scaffolding available which are only a metre high - instead of the two metre high racks we normally bring. But it seemed those were hard to find after checking three rental companies. Had to think of something else. I got in contact an event rental company today, and I've made a deal with the guy. We are going to bring a professional stage, which will measure 4 x 6 metres with a 2 x 2 metre slight elevated section for the drummer.
A customer of mine owns a Truss system. I asked him nicely and we can rent for a reasonable price. Same measurement; 4 x 6 metres. We will cover the top with one of the DfH banners, so the artists will be dry and free of electrocution if rain would drop on Friday (knock on wood there).
Last thing we were stuck with (besides some vital instruments which we are still working on) was sound. Mal will help us out a little here, but the main thing was decent speakers. So I got two sets of self-amplefied speakers with a total of 2750 watts each. Better bring your ear plugs.

Once again, please don't forget to pick up your wristband before the Friday night, your key to unlimited drinks.

I for one can't wait untill that Friday night, all ready for eargasms and liver pounding! ;D
Have fun you all, it's our pleasure!

I presume as an 'entry fee' some beer is deposited in the cool box etc.
Nope. We will have 1500 litres of beer on us in kegs with a professional event bar. No need to drag bottles as all is on draught.

But of course you'll be welcome to come. We do it for CA-ers and DfH-ers. Donations preferrably to charity (British Cancer Research), but if you really want to give money for beer, go and see LangTall. He'll be our PA for the night, and can't be missed!

Cheers, see you in a few weeks!

It is very well possible to adopt a keg of beer for those who want, or sponsor it for that matter. Go C LangTall for that.

We will put up a sign to thank whoever is giving away the keg, attached to the draft machine at said moment.

We paid for FlyingPigRacing keg at Brands - that's so long as Lang Tall was sober enough to remember  ;D ;D

It would be nice to see a number of kegs sponsored, DfH gave us a fab time last year and this year looks to be as good if not better so hands in pockets would be a nice gesture....

Band and stage arrangements sound great Paddy.

Will there be pole dancing and a mosh pit?

Tom, My phone is screwy at the moment - will try and give you a call tomorrow as it's kicking on for being quite late at the moment..

Paddy - The stage sounds frikkin amazing!  Assuming the vinnies vice drummer is happy he is welcome to use my kit (which would appear to be finding a route down.

Its a Premier APK kit, 2 X Power Tom, 1 X Floor tom, 1 X Snare, 1 X Bass, 1 X high hat.
I have 2 16" Crash Cymbals, 1 20" Ride Cymbal - All Paiste, but one of my stands has misplaced its top, therefore if vinnies vice can supply cymbals and stands for us to use as well that would be appreciated - I wont take offence if they want to swap and change pedals and highhats etc....those things can be quite personal.

Paddy,

What you have achieved in a such a short time is brilliant, but as a newby, where's your pitch and where is the venue?

It's a must for me and a few others in my group.

Hi Paddy,

We will sponsor a barrel in the name of the 'Red Dragon'.  Cash will be handed over after first PINT. I'll you for that.

As far as I know he will bring his own kit, as they are planning some more performances in France during that period. So they will have all there gear with them. I'm still trying to figure out what they won't bring (monitors, mike's, mixing desk, stuff like that) so I can arrange them upfront. Might ask for some help on that part in a few days.

Hi Jerry,

'Red Dragon' is noted. Look for the tall guy with a ponytail on the DfH compound, that will be me.

The moshpit is what people make of it, if the girl isn't to heavy (and pretty) I can be used as dancingpole. ;D

We will put up a sign to thank whoever is giving away the keg, attached to the draft machine at said moment.

Mal
Mal,

could you contact me on langtall(at)drinkingforholland(dot)com. By the looks of it I'll be needing mikes for the guitaramps, and a mixingdesk. And loads help setting it up, as I've never done this before.  :-\ Amps and speakers are sorted, so it will save you some space in cars.
