Title: Who is Driving the Longest Distance to Le-Mans
Post by: NorwayNick on April 10, 2007, 10:31:52 am
Just wondering if there are any CA guys that are crazyier than me! I have been to Le-mans every year but one since 1991 and due to moving my Drive has gotten a little longer now. Last year we drove From Oslo in Norway To lemans, thats 2600km each way, taking me 26 hours of driving and 6 countries.

And im doing it again this year :)

There are definately CAer's crazier than you Nick, those that go to the Sunshine State ::) and get tornados for a start. That's not a bad average speed you did last year. How much further are you away this year?

Okay Bob, the distance to Florida is larger, but IMO 26 hours of driving to Le Mans beats a 6 hours flight. Well done, NorwayNick!

Cheers

Werner

I claim the shortest. It is 9 kms to Mulsanne bend and about 15kms to the circuit entrance!

We met a group of Norwegians and Swedes on BSJ last year as they had a TV-set up and ready for Germany vs Poland.
Didn't ask for the distance, but they did it in 31hrs, only refuelling stops as they came with an old bus prepared for the race with sleeping area kitchen and so on.

For me it's the Le Mans 500  ;) (miles)
I have to pit three times during the "race" for fuel

Wow, that's heaps of ajustments on the car! :o How many bhp do you get out of your block?

hey at least it has an essex v6, and dont forget the same company built the famous RS200 ! Delboy and Roders would have liked one of those ;D maybe someone can post a picture of that :o

Title: Re: Who is Driving the Longest Distance to Le-Mans
Post by: NorwayNick on April 10, 2007, 11:14:59 pm
it has different cams and is decatted so it dinoed at around 230bhp, but that makes a big difference from the standard 150. Pluss it runs cooler and is better on fuel.

Sounds good, NorwayNick! 8)

Mine had a Cologne, not an Essex at it was an early eighties ('82 I believe). I alway understood cracking up the power to 200 bhp was easy and affordable with these blocks. Anything over 200 would cost you deerly :-\

I believe Bobblehat has a Scimmy as well.

Sounds great. My drive to Sebring is similar ar 2445Km so can relate to your journey. Do you have company on the drive?
Is that body style what they cal a Shooting Brake?

Indeed I do a SE6 (70th  or 71st built) it has the Essex V6, which I am informed can be pushed to 300bhp :o Mine is near to the 160 mark. Unfortunatly it is quitly falling apart on the drive so if anybody whants some spares drop us a line! Paddy yours sounds like a Middlebridge version, the Scimmy's last stand!

ok so cant drive the Scimmy down this year as i have just found out the power steering has packed up, and it costs about the same as a new Aston Martin to get a new one :(  (I might be exagerating)

Might be in with a shout on this one now Nick ain't driving (sorry to hear about your steering probs). Last years total return Mileage inc a few detours was 1358 miles. But I know that Newcastle Dave lives 5 miles further north from me so has further to go. Scimmies must be rare over Norway, our local rag is usually full of the things. A geordie favourite methinks.

Hi NorwayNick,

I used to Sprint & Hill Climb a '72 SE5a with RS3100 in the late 80's and had quite a few sucesses much to the chagrin of many. (You'll see why at LM).

Philosphy was ' Helmet on - Brain disengaged'!

After that is was a 3.4 GA Cossy in XR4i developed by Ford. Again much to the chagrin of many.

Hope to see you at LM

hmmm 3.4 GAA would like one of them, in my 4i. Helped run a RX7 with that engine in the Thunder Saloons.

yep there are only 2 scimitar registered in Norway, so finding spares is a problem, ok with the engine but a steering rack is going to be hard to find over here :'(

Holy Sh*t Jerry!
You got involved in motorsport events with one these!!??
Cor blimey, I'll bet that was a sight worth seeing, mind you I suppose it was a while ago now, and rules were made to be broken then.
Many the time I found myself down at Brands, the air thick with Zeppelins, and searchlights cutting the sky by Graham Hill Bends. A quick rat-a-tat-tat on the Browning usually signalled a pitstop, or the outbreak of hostilities, it was up to the stewards to decide.
I could eat two pints of whelks then.

Hi BigH,

Welks!, I get my fresh Cockles at the local pub, sprinkling of malt vinegar and a smudge of black pepper.

At Brands and Lyden they still had the AA's there, but that was to control the local Canada Geese.

Best Sprint Circuits:- Goodwood & Brands,
Best Hill Climbs:- Prescott, Harewood, Gurston & Shelsey Walsh.

I used to wear brown smelly undies before the green light!!

Edit:  That only has 2 wheels, was Delboy Trotter involved in its design?

So that will be 1358 + 5 +5 for me - though going in a 36 year old lotus so every one of my miles travelled must carry a premium?????

On the other hand i'm in a stinky oily old service van with 3 lunatics that constantly need to stop for the lav. I'd swap for a run in Dave's Lotus any day- its real perdy!

There was a GAA powered Gartrac Escort owned by a guy called Alun Edwards in the 80's. Sounded fantastic coming through the trees. Magic. Senna drove it once when C&CC had a rally car group test. He loved the thing and Martin Sharp said he was rather quick on the loose stuff and would have been a handy rally driver.
Nick- what rack does your car use? Is it a reliant part or off something else? How are you getting to Lm now? If  I could find one in blighty and bring it down can you get it home?

Title: Re: Who is Driving the Longest Distance to Le-Mans
Post by: NorwayNick on May 26, 2007, 08:16:10 am
Im coming down in my Mondeo Estate now, so not so much fun.
The rack is from a lhd rover p6 i have been told, But it was modded for the scimitar, so i guess it has to be a scimitar se6 one.
was thinking to try at the local scrappy to see if there was a modern rack that would fit.

But if you find a scimitar one that does not cost silly money then i would be interested.

thats what i like about CA people always willing to help. Last year i had to change a suspention bush in MB and broke a bolt. And someone i have never met stopped at every garage they passed in Le-mans to find me a new one, Top Bloke.

Termie

Would love to but I need the friday to be 48 hours long - not 24 to fit in all that we want to do that day.  Definately intend to be at St Saturnin so really looking forward to seeing you all there - not intending to do the drivers parade this year but hey when I'm in the carefree relaxed mood of Le Mans I will go with the mood of the moment so who knows yet.  Driving requires planning to fit around drinking (or is it the other way around).  Also depends what my bro is doing and he takes some looking after sometimes.  He got seriously lost on the way back from the parade one year with a push bike from 8pm til 4 in the morning.  Shows how happy he was when he cant find 100,000 people and a huge motor race event with firework beacons to guide you home.

Longest drive down there?

I dunno but there's an Irish Guy on the MG-BBS driving down from Scotland. I asked but am still waiting to hear whether he is doing NornIron-Stranraer then down to Pompey_Le Havre.

He might have a good claim for longest drive ex-UK I reckon.

Now, does this include ferries and air cargo?

Because it's possible for me (budget allowing) to undertake the journey in the shortest allowable time and cover 26,398 miles including connections and tranfers - time will be 49hours!

However, my mileage is unknown at the mo because I'm driving from Surrey.  So I do not expect a prize.

As I'm a bit slow getting to all posts I've only now got to this one and as an ex Scimitar owner I must say that yours sounds ace!! Mine was an SE5A and a real 3ltr , not a 2.8 that used the Cologne engine. The Essex engine was always better as standard, but the trunnions were a nightmare so bad that the good mod was to fit grease nipples to them! Had lots of fun in that RWD and lots of power!!
