Playstations have dominated the market for almost 4 years from launch. THe X-Box 360 is almost 6 months old. The PS3 is not even out here yet. I am slightly biased in the fact that i have bought a PS1 and 2 in the past and will buy a PS3 someday. My vote goes for the PS3. They have spent longer refining it. Remember we had the PS2 then the X-Box a year later, then the X-Box 360 was launched. If the trend carries on there will be another microsoft consule in under two year whereas the PS3 will reign for a further 5 or so. Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: Robspot on March 01, 2007, 10:42:29 am The Xbox 360 was released in the UK in December 2005 which is 15 months ago (come on Rick keep up), the PS3 will be released on 23rd March this year. On thing this means is that there are already tons of games for the 360 but you will limited to a handful of release games for the PS3 until more titles are developed.
The 360 is now priced at £280 for the premium version (the only one worth buying) whereas the PS3 is £425 which seems a lot but you get all the functionality of the 360 plus free online gaming (you have to pay a monthly subscription for online gaming with Microsoft - there's a surprise!) and a blu-ray dvd player. This is one of two new standards in high definition dvd the other being HD-DVD. Bear in mind though that blu-ray has only just been developed and therefore the PS3's player is likely to be far superceded by stand alone blu-ray players in the coming months/years so buying the system for this reason is probably not recommended. But hey, perhaps he just wants to play games!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you can do that too ;D I have an Xbox 360 and I'm very impressed. The range of games are good and the graphics are (for me) much better than my old PS2. I haven't seen the PS3 so I don't know how much better it is. Bear in mind that the gaming side of the PS3 has been developed for quite a while and the delay in release has been due to a shortage of blu-ray components so it is unlikely to be two years ahead of the 360 in terms of graphics and game play. It's worth saying that both of these consoles have high def outputs but as I don't have a high def tv I can't comment on how much better things look that way. The PS3 is actually capable of outputting 1080p compared to 1080i from the 360. The difference being that on 1080i you get 1080 lines on the screen and it draws every other one each time whereas 1080p draws all lines at the same time meaning the display should appear smoother. Not many games have been developed for 1080p at the moment though. It really depends what he wants. If he wants a very good console with lots of games now then I would recommend the Xbox but if he wants something that will become better over time then I'd go for the PS3. Also it's probably important to decide if he wants to play online against other people a lot as Xbox live is £39.99 for 12 months whereas PS3 is supposed to be free. You may still be able to pre-order a PS3 for release date but if not it's likely you will have to wait quite a while to get one Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: Jay (Team Cannonball) on March 01, 2007, 10:54:00 am A bloke in game I was talking too said that with regards to processing power the xbox 360 was only actually 3x more powerful than the original xbox, whereas the PS3 will be 200x more powerful than the PS2. Now we all know the ganme developers have been at the limit of the PS2 capability for several years now, but still, a 200-fold improvement.
Go with Playstation every time, they have a solid fanbase and some of the best game developers and game titles are signed to exclusive Sony deals. Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: Stu on March 02, 2007, 04:50:01 pm My sons got a 360 and its great. Xbox live is excellent and you can get it for £35 for the year (Gears of War anybody). Get the 360 then get the PS3 when the price drops. Plus if you flash your 360 you can download the games which is piracy of course and in no way do I condone it. ::)
Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: wishy on March 06, 2007, 07:32:31 pm Yeah....but Stu,
Being a geordie..........you guys never pay the fullprice on anything. My brother-in-law lives in Boulmer and gets his whisky for £5 a bottle ........straight from the North Sea. I remember when I was up there on holiday....there was an article in the local Newcastle paper saying that Northumberland has a very seious smuggling problem.......due to the indiginous population wanting cheap products. So can you get cheap 360 or ps2 games!!!! LOL Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: Stu on March 20, 2007, 08:53:25 am Yeah....but Stu, Being a geordie..........you guys never pay the fullprice on anything. I think the cheapness comes from being so close to the Jocks. Now their tighter than a wet knot. Title: Re: PS3 vs X Box Post by: TobyAnscombe on March 20, 2007, 10:08:06 am If you are talking about the Xbox 360 then there is bugger all difference really in terms of the games that will come out..
Yes, there may be some "exclusives" on one format or the other but 95% of the games will be more or less the same. As someone who has had almost every console since the NES (a looong time ago) your choice comes down to if you want a BlueRay player or not or a HD-DVD player or not. They both play online, they have almost the same graphics (to be fair, the Xbox is slightly ahead at the moment as it has been out for longer so developers are used to it) and the same sounds. I have a 360 and will get a PS3 at some point but my money is on the Wii which is much cheaper and is not really meant to be a one "sad bastard" player type of thing. Its also great after the pub with a load of *your* mates once the kids have gone to bed! BUY A PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks absolutely stunning in glossy black but the main advantage over the 360 is that it doesn't sound like a hairdryer. I couldn't believe how quiet it was. The games already look great but that might just be because I bought a Samsung HDTV as well (haven't tried the 360 on it cos the PS3 is soooo good). The only small gripe I have is that the controller is too light. I have got used to, and like, the weight of the 360 controller. But that's a minor point. So, for anyone waiting until the price drops I say "Buy it now and enjoy all the fun you won't be having if you wait!" Having access to both, I don't think there's much in it at the moment although the 360 contollers are better quality. I to just bought a Samsung HDTV (23" - £299 at Richer Sounds) for my sons bedroom and it's the dogs bollox. The 360's graphics are 100% better in HD. Xbox live is excellent and I think that Sony have a long way to go to catch up. |
