Title: New historic GT series Post by: Christopher on January 29, 2007, 10:05:01 am Story from Autosport. "A new historic series for GT cars from the 1990s, launched by FIA GT Championship boss Stephane Ratel, will kick off at Silverstone in May. The GT90s Revival Series, which will begin with the two pilot races in 2007, aims to recreate the glory days of the Global Endurance GT Series in the mid-1990s. It will be open to any GT1 or GT2 cars built in the 1990s and will also have a third class, to be known as GT3, for cars from one-make series such as the Porsche Supercup and Ferrari Challenge." Apparently Ratel said he had the idea in the back of his mind when he was approached by Paul Knapfield, sometime FIA GT racer, who wanted to race the ex-EMKA McLaren F1 GTR he had recently bought. Ratel is reported to be in contact with owners of Porsche GT1s, another McLaren owner and people with Ferrari F40 LMs and GT-Es. The first race is planned for Silverstone on May 5/6, which is FIA GT weekend. Wouldn't it be good to see the Elise GT1 back out and maybe a Mercedes CLK-GTR, if they can keep it on the ground! Title: Re: New historic GT series Post by: Bob U on January 29, 2007, 12:04:54 pm That will be superb. I would love to see the Nissan R390 race again, four finished in the top 10 at LM in 98. They looked good and sounded good but I don't remember them ever racing in the UK.

Yes the Mercedes, but also the Toyota GT-One, some seriously noisy Panoz's, Nissan R390, Porsche 911 GT1 and the short lived Audi R8C. I can't remember if the Audi R8 (open top) was classified asGT-1 or LMP1 in 1999. but I am sure someone can put me right. Also I assume that the Group C cars of the early 90's would be ineligible. Am I correct? Title: Re: New historic GT series Post by: Andy Zarse on January 29, 2007, 12:49:16 pm Also I assume that the Group C cars of the early 90's would be ineligible. Am I correct? Thinks Dauer Porsche... :( What a con! Looking through the pics, this looks like the Lotus that finished the 12 Minutes of Sebring in '05. ;D (http://www.gt90s-revival.com/gallery/Lotus_GT1-97.jpg) Title: Re: New historic GT series Post by: Christopher on January 31, 2007, 08:32:26 am I'd love to see one of these races. :( Looking through the pics, this looks like the Lotus that finished the 12 Minutes of Sebring in '05. ;D (http://www.gt90s-revival.com/gallery/Lotus_GT1-97.jpg) Oh, yes. The Elise GT1 is the very reason I finally made my first trip to Le Mans in 1997. I think at the time there were 3 race GT1s doing rounds in Europe. Last I read one was in the states trying to compete in a local series, but thatw as more than a year ago. The only (?) road going version was at the Great British Welcome in 2005. Stunning motor. But I assume the Esprit would be alowed in this series also. This was racing at Brands in the Global Endurance race in '96 (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Track-side/35mm%20Scans/EspritV8-Brands8.jpg) |
