I was in a friend's car back in 76 which was overtaken by an MGB GT, once passed the driver pulled a bit of string which bought up a sign saying "Police Stop", the Cooper in the MGB then booked him for doing 40 in a 30 limit, not as sophisticated as todays camera cars but just as sneeky.

In the late 70s I was heading to the race travelling on the road between Rennes and Le Mans, some way off in the distance was a broken down Renault Alpine - warning triangle out, tailgate up. As we approached a car overtook us at speed and whistled past the stricken Renault... at that moment the Renault's rear wheels lit-up as the driver floored the throttle bringing the tailgate down to reveal the blue light on the roof. Glad we were overtaken when we were. There but for the grace of god...

Cripes ..... was it 1976 ???
Saw a BRH unmarked MGBGT on the Bucks. M1 slip road with 2 bibs inside and it was not too long before he came past me with his bonnet stuck up the tail of a Volvo doing warp speed 9.
A couple of miles on he had pulled him over, strings and box sign in back lit up. The other driver was stamping with rage.
There use to be a crack about the bad guys having a sign which replied 'Bollux - Bandits' !

I know a guy who's dad was the chief driving instructor at Hendon Police police station in the 50's and 60's (he also did a couple of Mote Carlo rallies in a Wolseley I think) and he was saying how they also used Daimler 250's (Darts) and Sunbeam Tigers. I also seem to remeber that the odd E Type (fixed head) was used as a high speed Motorway pursuit car.
-
It is genuine! There is a video clip of the presentation and the car in use on YouTube. I have also heard reports of it actually being used in highspeed chases.

Early '70s on my way to the French GP at Cleremont Ferrand when a Healey 3000 went tearing past hotly persued by an Alpine Renault. Flashing lights, siren going and painted light blue with " Gendarme" written on the side!! First time I'd seen one, and boy did it look good with all that neg camber on the rear. I never saw them again so no idea who won!!
