Indeed they were. There are also some terrible reminders that safety then was not a patch on what it is today.

Here's one for you.  I know that some time in the past I have seen footage of Frank Gardner stuffing the Willment Galaxy at Old Hall in the mid sixties (I was sitting in the grandstand at the time).  I have googled away - like yer do - to no avail.  Every seen the piece of film I'm referring to.  Can't for the life of me find it.

Certainly did.  Shame about Crystal P, especially as I used to rent a flat about 100 yards from the old place, sadly after its demise.  RIP.
GP drivers of today just can't compete with this generation, can they?  Clark could race anything and did.  Still want a Lotus Cortina and probably always will.

This somthing I have never heard of, a race in 1971 between the US F5000 cars and the GP cars of the day.

Watching the tyre changes from that era is quite an eye-opener too!

What kind of car is it that comes round the corner at 1 min17 seconds into the clip?  (Big wide car).  I recognise the Cortina, Mini, Jag, Anglia but that other one doesnt look familiar.

Frank Gardner used to mix it with the Cortinas in one of these on a regular basis during what (in my humble opinion) was the hey-day of British Saloon car racing.  It was a sight to see - fast as you like but totally cr*p round corners.  I once raced - in one of those company track day things - in  a hovercraft (really) - must have been a very similar experience only about 20 times faster!

LOL - I had an old Ford Fairlane 5500 for a (very) brief time, was quite an experience (till the petrol ran out) - not suitable for those that suffer from sea sickness!  Spent quite a lot of time going sideways even without trying....

I lived in the ar*e end of nowhere at the time and if I ran out of petrol and had to use the spare gallon from the boot, I still couldnt reach the nearest petrol station (just over 2 miles)  :-[

The driver in Paddys link, did survive with horrific scars and went on to sue the the racetrack i think.

That one is deffo the Dumbreck crash... he landed outside the track.  The Mark Webber one stayed on the track and has the Viper underneath it as it flies through the air!

Are you thinking of the Rothmans 50,000? That was an anything goes race, F1 F5000 F2 and sportscars, David Piper entered his 917 etc.
The race was won by Fittipaldi driving a JPS Lotus. That must of gone down well at Pall Mall, Rothmans paying £50,000 to John Player!

Two drivers, maybe better know in sportscars came in 2nd and 3rd, Redman in a McLaren and that legand Henri Pescarolo driving a Frank Wlliams run March

The race in the clip takes place in either the US or canada and looks to be a much bigger event with entrys from Ferrari etc.

Hi guys, gone for a few days and just peeked in.  Nordic the 1971 F1 vs F5000 race was the one off Questor GP at the long gone Ontario Motor Speedway in California.  It was a big money event which drew all the F1 teams from Europe except Surtees.  Mark Donohue led for much of the race in a F5000 Lola but retired and the race was eventually won by Mario in a Ferrari, with JYS and his Tyrrell second.  There is a very nice film of this race that Speedchannel used to air as part of their "Glory Days" series, before Speed become the Good Old Boy network.

Hi Termie, oh yes, had a good look at those, some great stuff.  There is a surprising amount of good Can-Am footage floating around out there.  The Can-Am series was well recorded on film, and people like Dick Wallen and Marilyn Motschenbacher have released nice videos in recent years documenting the Can-Am era.
Much of Marilyn's stuff is film she herself shot while husband Lothar was a regular Can-Am privateer.

Knew I'd remembered it from somewhere in the UK at the time it happened when it created news in the motorsport press.   It was 1973, at the Race of Champions at Brand Hatch, where F5000 cars could compete against F1 (non-championship round). Peter Gethin won the race driving a Chevron-Chevrolet.

I was there too.  The previous night there was a Deep Purple concert at the Central Hall Chatham.  I think it was a mixture of both, but my ears rang for another 4 days.

Mike Hawthorn in a Jaguar D Type in 1956 pre-race driving a lap of the track and commentating - pre-race including remarks about "typical french" relating to various random cars, pedestrians and cyclists encountered around the track.  Epic stuff.  Narrow roads.  Lots of trees.  No Armco anywhere.  But the Stella bar and Hunaudieres are still there........ Steve - you may well be right, but I can'r remember exactly (and my videos are in the loft at the moment, I just don't recall seeing that one.  The first Hawthorn one is just brilliant though - talk about in period.  And of course there is the Standard Motor Co film of the 1955 race, focussing on the TRs and Jaguars.  Very in period too.  Clipped BBC accents and all that.

I worked as a radiographer for about 18 months on the island, including the TT in 1997. A busy fortnight. 14 days, 7 full nights work, and 7 nights in Bushys (Knocked down now) followed by a chest infection so bad I was nearly hospitalised.

There are also plenty of driver dressed in Jeans etc and cameramen is postions that display an amazing lack of self harm.

That's a good bit of news.  Mr termite and I discussed his absence in '06 and were a bit concerned.  Thanks.

Great clip of GV.  Any footage of the little Canadian makes me misty-eyed.  I always have great sympathy for those who never had the opportunity to see Gilles race in person.
It was something that just defied description.  The guy was clearly working at a different level than the mere mortals around him.  I was standing with my dad, uncle, and brother along the fencing at Mid-ohio in 1976 watching Formula Atlantic pratice, lap after lap GV came past in a perfectly controlled drift.  My uncle turned to me after a few minutes and said "that little Canadian guy is going to be a helluva racer, if he lives long enough".

Every time I hear a see and hear a Spitfire like that it brings tears to my eyes.  I can't explain why, it just does.  I think it's a combination of the noise, the gracefulness and sheer beauty of them, and I suppose their history.  I'm only 35 now, so it's not that I'm reminiscing over times gone by.  It just happens.  I just watched that clip about a dozen times, and am sitting here blubbering like a fool.  God, to fly one must be awesome...  8)

Yep - great cars but haven't seen one for a long time.

First time I saw one was in the first or second year of Santa Pod ( was that about '67? ) and this dark blue gull-wing was putting in some really fast times despite lots of axle-tramp as the back axle rotated around the prop-shaft.
No wonder they had problems at the Ring too with axle mounting failures.

Bloody hell, how did he walk away (or limp) from that? a testement to the car design and saftey equipment, although also a high degree of luck with all of those shards of carbon fibre flying around.

Would you drive a car that wouldn't survive that sort of crash?  Thats what they've been working on fot the last 30 years, but its seems that its the car not the track that saved Ortelli

In a few years, the way technology is advancing I can see it happen.  With the 'fuel' stop taking ages, you'll only need one driver. He can have a kip during recharge. Unless they change the whole battery pack.

Love it Leftie! Piece of Rally history there - great hill climb car (Peugeot 405 T16) and even better driver (Ari Vatanen is a proper legend). It's great to see the footage again and I'm always amazed just how on the limit he is the whole way up! And without a co-driver too! Unquestionably one of driving's heroes  ;D  ;D  ;D
