Title: ****** new le mans film out! ******
Post by: le mans god on October 12, 2006, 12:34:48 pm
I'm an independent film maker. I've just made a film about what it is really like racing at Le Mans. We got a plug on Radio Le Mans when we were filming.

I showed it to Derek Bell, 5 times winner, and he said it was 'DYNAMITE!'

I also showed it to Le Mans boffin Brian Laban. He said:

'A terrific film. You need to see it.
'A fantastic story, brilliantly told!'

I think anyone who loves Le Mans is going to love this film. That's why I made it. I just love this stuff!

It is being premiered in Milan on October 29 and available on DVD right after.

My new website is www.lemansgods.com

Please take a look.

Whilst not strictly a spam post - ie. for once this one is actually about Le Mans, I refer you to our posting guidelines regarding items for sale http://www.clubarnage.com/forum/index.php?topic=144.0

The DVD looks interesting, but I would hope that "Le Mans God" actually intends to continue his association with Club Arnage by contributing and adding to the healthly debate and banter that goes on within this community.

I'm trying to not be too cynical and hope that this will not be the only post by this member.

Nevertheless, I'll move this post to the Sell / Swap section as that forum section more closely represents the nature of the original post..

"BEHIND THE SCENES ACCESS YOU CANNOT BUY"

This is what the advert says, I found the quote on the for sale page!!

Should there be sufficient objection from CA members as to the nature of the orginal post, it will be pulled.

Why on earth could anyone object?   Or am I missing something?   ???

"BEHIND THE SCENES ACCESS YOU CANNOT BUY"

Maybe what it means is you cant buy the access (ie access all areas pass) as an average punter, not that you cant buy watching someone else with access getting behind the scenes....  :-\

Looks like it's the film made by the crew that were following (and getting in the way of) Martin Short and his Rollcentre team this year.

If it is then it should be great to watch.

exactly Paddy, the bloke turns up with one post and wants us to part with our cash for something we've never ever heard of and at full price, bit of a cheek if you ask me.  Not even a preview to judge the quality, looks like a chancer to me.

No doubt Brian can give us the low down in a few days once he's had a look at his copy.

Crikey, what a cynical lot we are! Here's a guy drawing attention to something we might be interested in and all he gets is thinly veiled abuse. I mean he's hardly likely to financially rape us to become the next Speilberg off the back of it. Chris24 (quite rightly) sells his Goodwood FoS CD on CA every year on the basis it might be of interest to somebody and no one bats an eyebrow about that. So frankly I'm a little embarassed we've been less than welcoming this time. :(

What do you expect the original poster to do? Maybe he could give the film away for free. I think we should take this as a genuine offer at face value and then engage in a proper critique of the film, but only once we've watched it. It might be good or it might be absolute crap, and if so we can pan it and it's creators on artistic content to our hearts content. But so far as I can see, any addition to the library of the subject we love should be initially welcomed.

I am with Mr Zarse on this one.   But I have noticed a recurring theme of not being terrifically welcoming to some newbies on this forum.

Title: Re: ****** new le mans film out! ******
Post by: Ferrari Spider on October 17, 2006, 02:18:04 pm
You may be right?  Personally, it would of been useful to see portions of the film, you know, like a trailer, so we can at least gauge the quality of the film.  Amazon, have already got it at a lower than advertised price.  So we're being asked to buy something which we know little of, how it may be  of more interest to us than the official DVD, which in the main most of will get.

So why do I need another film of Le Mans 2006, what are the benefits to me/us?

Fran, call me a cynic, if a newbie wants to cold sell on the forum, surely they can expect the rough and smooth, or is that unreasonable?

To be honest, I'm right fed up with all this over expectation of tolerance of others and changing our ways and falling over backwards to appease hurt feelings.

and yes I'm turning into a right grumpy old man, I've had enough of the bloody PC stupidity and its about time we stood up to it.

Right on Fran. It's just called manners to be friendly, polite and helpful to strangers and my great grandmother told me they maketh the man. Then again she was a Victorian and times change, although manners were invented years before so-called "political correctness".

I know it's easy to grow weary of some of the tossy spammers who crop up on here with monotonous regularity. However, this is clearly a genuine offer. To my mind Club Arnage should be open to everyone to give and take what pleases them. There's nothing in the Rules that says you have to be a regular poster before you can punt something on here.

There are members of all of our respective LM crews who post regularly on CA but most other members don't. I don't think we should stop them showing up at the Poo Bar though, just because they don't post on CA every day. That to my mind is the logical conclusion of the increasingly (I hesitate to use the word cliquey) "regulars and non-regulars" theme that is sometimes expressed on here. The RLM thread was a case in point. I believe it's damaging to CA, and by definition to our overall LM experience, in the long run. We do some bloody amazing stuff on here, charity fund raising, piss-ups, the LM Guide for Dummies are all cases in point and are an absolute credit to those involved. All I'm saying is let's not spoil it!

I have to say there's a huge difference between spammers trying to flog us cheap jewellery and fruit baskets and a guy with an LM movie to plug.  He might quite rightly have thought that some of us would be interested.  I thought Steve Brown's response was bang on. Hope he comes back and contributes a bit more than just a sales pitch in the future.  When I saw this post the first time, I was undecided as to whether to report it as spam but decided not in the end as it seems on topic to me and after some reflection it still does.  As has been said here, we don't have to buy it.

Agreed Termie. after all he was trying to sell somthing that he thought would be of interest to us. If he had never mentioned it there is a chance that we would never know it existed. How can this be classed as Spam?
If he was trying to sell it to a tropical fish keepers forum or suchlike it could then be construde as Spam the same as those trying to flog us flower arrangements and dodgy Viagra.

Give the guy a chance for Christ's sake

By the looks of it, this topic goes into a different direction. Are we that bad to newbies? The only bad reactions I saw was against spammers and that young dude 'viper900dodge'. Has everybody forgotten that not everyone was that nice to mopedboy? Untill he showed his face at Le Mans that was...
I think it has more to do with the time of the year. From March/April onwards untill July/August interested newbies arrive, and from there on it seems only a small 'hardcore' group hang around. I agree we shouldn't scare new people away, but the spammers don't make life easy for people trying to attract us to something interesting.

...and going back ontopic...
Personally, it would of been useful to see portions of the film, you know, like a trailer, so we can at least gauge the quality of the film.
I can only agree on this.

can't disagree with the good manners, especially to newbies, where i draw the line and it is a general rule here that we do not make a profit out of our fellow CAer's or am i wrong?

So why should it be any different when a DVD is promoted 5 squid over the price you can get from Amazon?  Maybe vast sums won't be made, enough ruckus is made about ticket sales etc.

Uncle Bob, how does all this fairness and light stack against the Food for thought thread you posted this morning which got pulled by the moderators?

My God what a dull thread this is turning into.

Mr FS, I think you are in the minority here but you are not prevented from expressing your views. That doesn't mean anyone has to agree with you.

The spate of spam (and you only see those who actually make it to post - many many more accounts are blocked by Steve and myself before they get that far) is hard work. However this wasn't spam. (Wikipedia says SPAM means Stupid Pointless Annoying Message btw). it was an offer of sale (not an obligatory purchase) of something which might be of interest to users of this board. Just because you can get it cheaper doesn't devalue this offer. The post doesn't even fail under the profiteering thing in my opinion: just to be clear, that is aimed primarily (well almost solely) at ticket touts after a quick buck - this guy is presumably running a business - and yes, there is a difference.

I moderate on another forum and the moderation is not done in moderation: if a thread strays from original topic it is dealt with, using the delete button; if a topic is not related to the purpose of the forum it disappears; posts are deleted and amended by mods to remove potentially offensive or libellous words. It's hard work. The effect is (usually) an exceedingly well behaved and "polite" forum, which actually informs users rather than acts as a playpen for them. You simply don't get the banter, idle chit chat and straying off topics we get here. That site has a lot more regulars than this one (but you can't draw any real conclusions from that).

And while I'm at it, discussion of moderation policy is one thing which is strictly banned from that forum. If people don't like it then disputes are done in email, directly with the moderators. The stock reply is "well tough, the moderators decision is final and if you don't like it you can go elsewhere". I'm not for one minute suggesting that should happen here nor am I suggesting that you go elsewhere - I'm just trying to out-bore you. :)

I'd agree that we have been less than welcoming on occassions so I'll take more action to stop that if it occurs again. However it's no good getting arsey with the moderator because one's ever-so-witty (but potentially offensive) post was removed.  The moderators won't always get it right (witness my deletion of your "eye" picture - can you send me a copy btw?) but it's a crap enough job without having to explain everything to everyone in minute detail.

btwI didn't see Bob's thread today but Steve did, and contacted Bob to explain why it didn't belong here. Political correctness maybe. I'm sure we'd all agree about our over-interfering nanny state, but that's the way it is and grumbling on CA about it won't change it. I also don;t see why the moderator's decision should be questioned - we are acting on behalf of the website owners, who have every right to determine how their forum is operated, and in some circumstances the website owner (and mods) could be legally liable if libellous statements remained on vuiew (although I know practically this hasn't been properly challenged yet).

So, are you bored now? I am. Bbl.

Watched it today, very well put together and a fantastic film. It should have been called, blood, sweat and tears for what they went through to get the car ready in time.
Well worth the money, but as Paddy, states the fans bit does not really do the film justice. They would have been better with any number of the CA theme teams.
Great job John.

Brian.

Great review Brian. And why not?

Finally got the time to see the whole thing. And it's good, damn good 8)
Gives you an excellent look at the build up to- and race itself from an insiders' view.

Martin Shaw is in many ways comparable to Jan Lammers. Except I think Lammers' team gets more backup from Dome, whereas Shaw's team has to 'invent the wheel' all on their own.

Thumbs up all the way for Rollcentre after viewing this DVD, so here you go hgb! (http://forum.drinkingforholland.com/images/smiles/icon_thumbsup.gif)

I watched it yesterday, very impressed.  I thought Martin Short was about to burst into tears talking about the Sebastien Bordais incident in 2004.

I wouldn't have bothered with the extras for what they are, I would have put the full Joao Barbosa lap in the film in the correct place and left it at that.

But a very imformative piece of work.  Strange steering-wheel grip of Mrs Short as well  ;D

Santa Delivered as requested my copy!

Watched it twice (second time with dad) Nice to see the teams that don't have endless resources struggling mentally to get there and compete in the race.

My only thought was when Martin said that they had been planning Le Mans since January? Most of the fans I know that go are starting to think about next years event before the last one has finished!

Very good film and would recommend to anyone.

Rick.

Title: THANKS
Post by: le mans god on January 24, 2007, 06:03:38 pm
Hey a big thank you to whoever bought Le Mans in the lap of the gods! Much appreciated.

The film is doing very well and as well as sales looking promising it has also won DVD of the year BBC Top Gear Magazine.

That is two awards it has won now!

Since making it I have been invited to speak to Channel 4, BBC,Bravo, Discovery and Sky One about us potentially making films for them.

We have also had some kind e mails from a few people too so thanks for them.

Thanks again - it makes it all worth while - all that darn stress!
J

I got it for Christmas too. I thought it was much better than the official DVD,

Liked, the behind the scenes feature of what a team actually goes through.

Would Like:

Bit more on the campsites. There are massive parties going on all week and really great atmosphere. Many people go just for the camping.

All in all fantastic job.
