It might be usefull to first have an entry list for 2007 before starting a poll?

And can you please cut it a bit on the !!, as in the internet it is seen as shouting if you use them a lot, just LIKE WRITING LIKE THIS.

every body else does but u dont moan at them.

Lesson 1: It's everybody without the space in it.
Lesson 2: You write it as do not, don't but not as dont.
Lesson 3: It is YOU not U.
Lesson 4: I do not moan.

Point out someone else out who overdoes it consequently on the exclamation mark, and I will also bitch on that person too if you like. But better you go play outside and let the grownups talk to eachother without you hassling them.

Viper - I have sent you a PM (which has turned out to be prophetic) - please have a read.

A big welcome to viper900dodge but please remember that this is a site for grown ups and it would be nice to keep it that way.  So I therefore uphold the criticism which says we don't want text language (i.e. u instead of you).  If you cannot be bothered to do it properly, don't do it at all.

this is a site for grown ups

Is it?  I thought it was a site for anyone with an interest in motor racing and LM in particular?

I've never seen any grown ups when it comes to Le Mans and such things.  ;)

I have been looking again at all of Viperboy's postings, and those of some of the other youngsters we have had as members over the last couple of years.

What I found was rather frightening.

The standard of their use of written English is appalling.

I know it was a long time ago, but when I started school and was being taught to read and write, one of the first things I was taught was that sentences and nouns always begin with a capital letter.

Punctuation is virtually non existant in all posting making them, for the most part, a garbbled mess.

I think it is a disgrace when a Dutch speaking member has to correct an English speaker on the use of his native language.

The use of "Text Speak" also seems to be on the increase. This, I can understand when using a mobile due to the often limited amount of letters that can be used. To use it when typing or writing is nothing but laziness and could also be thought of as bad manners or a sign of disrespect.

If this is the standard of teaching in our schools, then I fear for the future of the written English language. Maybe it's not all the kid's who are at fault, but the system that teaches them.

My written English is far from perfect, but, I like to think that I know the basics.

Rant over. Maybe this should be on the Grumpy Old Men thread.

Well learnt  :) and well done for taking it on the chin.  Watch and check carefully before posting.   There is enthusiasm of all sorts on this site (most of it generally ranges around motor sport and Le Mans, at least for some of the time) so stick with it.   One day, you'll get to Le Mans and see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Youngsters who have the initiative to find the site, log onto it and post on it are welcome, at least by most, as it shows an interest in the sport that should be encouraged.   We all started somewhere, generally when we were young once, many moons ago.   Having the persistence to keep going in the face of adult criticism and to learn from mistakes is laudable.   Adding to Lang Tall's first four lessons, there is a simple fifth lesson:

Lesson 5:  Use capital letters in the appropriate places; for example, to begin a sentence, for the pronoun "I", for proper names, for the titles in publications etc etc.

Please.......

johnny waring, please also note Lessons 1 to 5 and use a spell checker.......

I thorght that none of the teams have a 575 GTC anymore.Convers menx certik has a 550 and wich championship are you on about le mans series ALMS or LM or even FIA GT

End of harumphing...... ::)

You can't blame the kids, all the time. It is down to the schools, in some cases. I have worked in some schools, were they have to cope with 16 different languages, and the teachers are from South Africa or other parts of the of the World. So there English is not up to standard.

Oh ffs (are we even allow to use those kind of abbreviations now?), this is a forum not an English exam.

The "youngsters" are not the only ones on here who dont use perfect English, many of our more mature members make spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that make their messages virtually unintelligible but that somehow doesnt seem to be raised as an issue - unless they bluff it by claiming its a sign of their alcohol intake.

Believe me, I intend absolutely no disrespect to Langtall, I dont speak a word of Dutch and think all the DfH crew put us to shame with their grasp of the language, but the phrase "Point out someone else out who overdoes it consequently on the exclamation mark, and I will also bitch on that person too if you like. But better you go play outside and let the grownups talk to eachother without you hassling them." is not an example of perfect English that should be used as an attempt to demonstrate the poor literacy of another forum member.

Cant we just get back to chatting about cars, booze n birds?

F
(increasingly grumpy old woman)

P.S.  Yes, I do know that it should be "don't", "doesn't", "can't" & "and" - but what difference does it make in a chat forum, really?

P.P.S. As far as I can see Viper has made 1 post since 22 September which was suitably brief - so can we leave the poor lad alone now?

It' nothing personal towards Viperboy Fran, it's the education system in general.

A person from an older generation who maybe has to peruse applicants CVs, will, I am sure, reject those with bad English grammer and spelling as a matter of course and favour those with a better command of our language.

In most cases it is not the kids fault. It seems to me that Viperboy has taken the critisism of his English very well and learned from it. Maybe we have done him a favour by pointing it out when the education system is letting youngsters like him down.

applicants .... grammer ......kids ......critisism

Sorry Bob but under the circumstances I can't resist   ;):-

applicants' - grammar - kid's - criticism

See how easy it is to make mistakes when just typing casually on a forum - and yet I can understand exactly what you are saying?

Although you say it isn't personal about Viperboy, your opening sentence referred specifically to going through his earlier postings.

LOL - don't panic - I am not going all Capt Sensible, but as we were on the subject of spelling and grammar, I had been paying particular attention.

Incidentally, I could point out that you should have used "I" rather than "i" if I wanted to,  but that would just be silly.  8)

I hope everyone has noticed the dramatic reduction in my use of the "!" as well.

Fran is correct in her earlier post, this is a site for motor race fans, not pedants. Age isn't important, tolerance is. Posts should be sufficiently coherent to be understandable (unlike some contributors, on occassions!), but perfect use of Queen's English isn't essential. Having said that, anyone posting in txt spk will be requested (by the mods) to desist, or risk losing their posts.

Flaming someone for any reason, whether it be their age, their opinions, poor grammar or spelling isn't productive or smart.

I asked Viperboy to review his contribnutions before hitting enter, that advice applies to anyone. Not just to check readibility, but also to ensure that your comment isn't open to mis-interpretation, and possible offence. I can pick out at least four comments from the past two weeks (and none of them are Viper's) which I'm sure read differently to the way they were meant, and could be construed as implite, to say the least. (And don't forget to include smileys to put your comments into context, where appropriate).

There is no intention to stop healthy debate - I'm sure we've all had a good laugh at some of the threads here - I know I have! Just sometimes, a bit of respect and understanding would go a long way...

Steve and I have enough on our hands keeping the spammers at bay. That's given us intimate knowledge of how to Ban users. Enough said!

Are we allowed to say "u" instead of "you" and "tho" instead of "though"?  They date way back to Teeline speedwriting (30+ years ago) - before texting was even invented, as do many of the text abbreviations.  :P

I was a Pitmans New Era person myself, a far superior shorthand method. (That is comparable to "O" Level as opposed to CSE)

As a frequenter of many forums, can I just mention that bad spelling, grammar and txt spk are generally the norm in many chat rooms and "youth" sites, where people are communicating very quicky in lieu of speaking and abbreviate for speed. I also think there is a perceived element of "cool" factor to poor language by some poor impressionables.

Our small club forum regularly has youngsters arrive and post in exactly the same way, but only because it is what they are used to elsewhere online. Typically they turn out to be perfectly literate once the error of their ways is pointed out.
