Title: Number (licence) plates
Post by: Christopher on August 15, 2006, 02:42:19 pm

Can anyone explain why the UK, and other countries, have different colours for the front and rear number (licence) plates fitted to vehicles?

i.e. the front is white with black letters and the rear is yellow with black letters.

This is not a quiz........I don't know and hence am asking.

Thank you.

Hmm, I don't know but I think it may hark back to the fact that it is an offence to show a white light at the rear of a vehicle unless it is reversing.

I remember when  the reflective number plates came out there was a concern that reflected light could confuse other road users into thinking they were approaching a car coming towards them in poor visibility.

(I don't think it was likely but who knows?)

Anyway that is what I thought back then and await with interest anyone else's take on it.

 :)

Now let's think about this very carefully ....

They were actually designed with the original Audi TT in mind which looks exactly the same from the front and the back.  The different colour plates are to tell the driver which end to put the fuel in.  (Audi TT drivers tend to be hairdressers you see..)

That sounds very similar to what I found from another source.....

I think this arises from the pre-existing rule that there should be no white reflectors or lights (except when reversing) on show at the rear of the vehicle. The 70s change was for more legible number plates, hence the reflective background. I think other countries do not have reflective white number plates at the rear.

A white light or reflector should immediately signify the front of an oncoming vehicle, or an obstruction that should be treated as such and passed to its left as seen from your direction of travel (in left hand drive countries).

Next question is why are some French plates black and some are yellow?

That will be the same as here in the UK, black plates are old and have been phased out for the yellow and white ones, as they were here.

Black plates pre change, yellow white post change.

What happened to the yellow headlights is of interest, i like yellow headlights, i always fancy yellow headlights when i go to france but no one sells the paint you used to get in the good old days.

Bright lights in St Peter Port eh? So you mean the strings of light bulbs they hang between lamp posts  ;)

You should have buzzed over to Jersey - we do a higher class of (money laundering and tax avoidence) business here plus you can dance on a Sunday!

Get it right numb nuts, we have the option of both, all black and silver or yellow and white. And we do not have to have a letter prefix as the Crapauds (Jersey) do because we know where we come from.and you will agree that our plates look a lot better.
