Title: Andy Zarse's Dog
Post by: termietermite on July 12, 2006, 09:42:55 am
How's the dog doing by the way?  Hope the news is better now and it didn't spoil your weekend too much.

Thanks and also to all those who showed concern over the weekend.

For those that know him, Dave chased after a thrown stick which got stuck in the ground like one of those big spikes you see in the medievil films. The great dimwit somehow managed to pierce it through the back of his mouth, nasal cavity and soft palete into the base of the skull and spinal column. He's still in the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals at South Mimms, which is the main teaching hospital of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. I still haven't been allowed to see him but theoretically he'll be home on thursday.

Yes this did put something of a dampener on the Classic weekend, at least until they'd done the exploratory op and decided he was probably going to live.

Can I warn anyone who owns a dog that unless they want a bill for £3000 and a sh**t load of heartache - NEVER THROW STICKS FOR YOUR DOG. PERIOD! - Tennis balls dummies and a myrriad of other harmless toys are fine and are widely available from  petshops. More importantly if you ever let anyone else look after your pooch I suggest you drum it into their heads too.

I have to say Andy it was most odd seeing you drinking tea on Saturday.  :o

Good to see you get stuck into the cidre once you'd heard that Dave was going to be okay.

Hope he's home with you soon.

Andy,I am really sorry to hear about Dave. I remember meeting him at the Hatch Warren beer festival, (yes it's true folks he was there) and thought what a fine dog he was. I hope he makes a full recovery. It sounds as if he is in the finest place possible to aid the proccess.
Good luck mate

Crikey, fingers crossed he is okay and has many years of chasing balls and other non pointy things ahead of him.

Doris told us about the poor dog on Saturday - hope he gets better soon. Fair bit of empathy as our two were in kennels for the weekend.

ps Thanks for buying the tickets!

Bloody Hell!! Hope he's OK Andy!!! Let me know if there's anything I can do!

I was with Andy and Dave for a sneaky pint on Friday lunchtime before he headed off for The Classic.

I was truly sorry to hear about this - hope he makes a full recovery from an injury that is far more common than you might expect.
I must confess to having a soft spot for dogs - and Dave is a fine looking animal.
I just spent $500.00 having what turned out to be a benign growth removed from my German Shepherd's foot - but you don't hesitate with stuff like that - as you clearly show.
Wishing a speedy recovery.
Matt

Andy, as our chat at the Classic, glad and relieved to hear the prognosis for Dave Zarse has improved.
Here's wishing the old boy a speedy recovery.

Hope he recovers fully soon. I am not a dog person, but know how you must be feeling as I have had cats for as long as i have been walking the earth.

Glad to hear that Dave is making a good recovery, Andy.

As a 'dog' person myself - I have two black Labs - I know how you must feel.

Hope he continues to recover.

Andy, best wishes for Dave to get better. They do make you worry don't they. I remember when Rory was in dock for a stomach blockage, only swallowed a huge soddin' stone hadn't he? Blocked solid.
Anyway, he (Dave) will be home soon I'm sure and he will soon be after the sticks and balls etcetera again.

Your dog? You can't beat him for a mate...

And sometimes the best person to chat to as well.

 :)

Hi Andy,
Glad to hear the big fella is doing fine.  As a former owner of several Labs & Retreivers I'm well aware of their enthusiasm for a good game of fetch. Agreed, no sticks!
They're chewing fools and can pick up splinters and all sorts of nasty's as well as more serious and acute injuries like Dave's.  Tennis balls have always worked nicely (unless they decide to leave one on the stairs at night and one finds it in the darkness ;) Yes, I've gone ass over heels on that one.

I have a friend who has trained his dog to chase the t*rds from out of his (the masters) bottom!
It's a sight worth seeing, and I'm not kidding. He'll find a bush, he's not too bothered about how big it is, then  drop his drawers and get down to business. His dog goes bonkers, and then starts running around him, barking and jumping in the air until, I suppose, he detects something in the air other than himself. Then the nose goes between the lucky owners cheeks and he starts dragging out the lucky jobby. He's a dog of real class, if limited intelligence and I think he has what dog fanciers call "ratting blood" in him.
I would imagine it's a good aid to constipation relief, and I'm sure any New-Agers reading this would probably confirm his holeistic approach.
I just thought you might want to know that...

PS. Get well soon Dave (does he have a mate called Trigger?)

Bloody Labs eh?

If he's anything like ours, he'll be 35 kilos of dog, with 2.4 grams of that weight being brain.

That brain occupies 90% of its capacity trying to get food, and the other 10% looking guilty.

Hope he makes a full recovery, sounds like he will.

We have a cat called Chas, for the simple reason my wife wouldn't let me call him Dave.

Ok, well I picked up the big fool from the Hostipal for Cannine Idiots yesterday arvo. Whilst I think we were generally pleased to see each other, I was a bit shocked to see that he's now shaved bald like his owner and this has lent him a more than passing remeblence to an iguana. There's a ten inch incision from his chin to his sturnum which was to let the air out of his neck muscles and chest (mediastinum). The Docs had taken the strange yet inventive decision and neatly clipped his wound together with eighteen staples rather than using the more traditional stiches. I expect they'd run out of thread and raided the stationary cupboard for inspiration.

Anyway he's perked up a lot this morning and we've been for a gentle stroll. He's starvin' marvin' because of his palette wound, so all he can eat is soup liquidised with Pedigree Chum. I've not tried feeding him on t*rds yet H, but I might go for a curry tonight and give it a go in the morning.

Seriously, the RVC Hospital is a truely amazing place, with some of the most skilled surgeons in Europe. It's a damn sight better run and more efficient than my local NHS hospital and I really couldn't thank all the dedicated staff adequately enough.

So it's heartfelt thanks from me and Dave to all the well wishers both on here and privately. Maison Blanche felt like a very long way from home on saturday and for the only time in my life I wished I wasn't at Le Mans, oh apart from that time when I was arrested (wrongfully of course). I'm sure there's sunnier days around the corner for the boy.

Good to hear he's home Andy, as you said, he'll be back to his old self soon. Animals have a remarkable ability to ignore the fact that they are seriously injured and just get on with life, while we humans act like we're on death's doorstep everytime we stub a toe. ;D

Until I get hold of him that is - he ruined my saturday too the thoughtless oaf! Don't worry though Andy, I'll bring a stapler from the office so I can 'do him up again'.

On a lighter note, Dave and Poppy's 9 children are 1 year old today, so Mark, I hope you have Chas' party all planned...

Fantastic news Andy, I'm sure he will soon be as good as new. Be sure it's only tennis balls you throw for him from now on. That is a stressful and expensive way to learn what should be oh so obvious to us all. I must admit I had never thought of the possible  consequences of throwing sticks for a dog

Glad to here Dave is ok. Having had a near miss when one of my Jack Russels went to grab a bamboo cane sticking out the field we were in, it shattered, fortunately only leaving a cut mouth.
Dogs being dogs, they would probably do it again. I heard one story of a Jack Russel having a go at a Staffordshire bull terrier the owners were looking after. It lost badly, but on the return from the vets with 100 odd stitches he had another go. ::)

My lab (mentioned earlier in the thread) was running round the garden like a loony one day, when he spied what he thought was his punctured football, so he charged up to it, and there was a crack, and a yelp as he tried to pick up a piece of granite that didn't look anything like a punctured football. ::)

Thankfully the only damage was a broken canine tooth, which, on learning that the dog was insured, the vet offered to put a crown on.

I said I'd think about it.

It was 6 years ago, I've thought about it. The tooth is fine.
