Just been trying to book tickets for Donington LMES and can't find any mention of camping on their website.
I've never camped there before.
Is the camping off site so you have to leave your tents to go into the circuit?.
If on site is it on the infield as at Silverstone?
Will it be possible to set up a CA enclave like we did last year?

Ohh a thread on which I have a small amount of knowledge!!
There is free camping in a field at the track (first come first served I assume as they do not issue tickets) with very basic toilet/water facilities. You drive in with your car and set up, she didnt say anything about having to park elsewhere.

We are allowed to bring in "a reasonable amount of beer".... 8)
You could always give em a ring and ask for more factual information tho - or perhaps someone else has been there before. :)

If it's the same set up as they had for the Moto GP last year then the campsite is just outside the track at Macleans. The car park was separate and we had to carry our tents etc from the car park. Fair ground / bar / food botulism vans between the campsite and the track entrance. Camping is, I have been lead to believe, free.
I tried to get details out of the lady I spoke to when I booked my tickets but she was a mardy old bag who quite obviously didn't want to be at work that day. >:(
Will try again tomorrow when the boss is out. :D

I can bring stuff like heeps of beer and a small genny, but my campervan hasn't got the same size as last week's lorry :-\

I reckon the best thing for you to do Paddy would be to ask if they can do some kinda deal for some people wanting the full weekend package and what they can arrange for those who already have race tickets. No harm asking - they might just come up with a figure to cover the camping etc and the commission they would have earned by selling a race ticket!
In any event if speedchills wont do a deal we could always book camping direct with the farm, though that wont give us access to the special bar! :-[

Paddy, I'm sure amongst us we have enough spare kit, for example I have a very substantial 5m x 3m Gazebo which could be used for communal use, plus my big tent. Dare say other have similar spare kit which can be brought along for the good of all.
could start a separate thread for kit and take it from there.

I'm happy to camp at the farm or at SpeedChills depending on what the majority want. Having said that I've two comments;
1. What do Speed Chills actually give us for the extra money over the ticket cost; only a shower block by the look of things. Personally I'm not bothered about paying more to eat their mass catering slop, when we can get a few pots and pans steaming and sizzling on Bob's Big Cooker and also the onboard facilities in the Commer.
2. We are all resourseful and intelligent people with a good supply of gear to make the weekend sucessful if we all pitch in and "do our bit". It was a good laugh at Silverstone even if I did miss Bob's curry due to bad planning. Anyway, people who go down the hospitality route tend not to be my cup of tea, we call them the "spoon-fed brigade".

Called to track and got the following info out of them......
Campsite (well patch of ground we can camp on): Behind Coppice / McLeans.
Facilities: None as such. Possibly not even chemical loos. :o ??? :o There are loos just inside the circuit to the right of McLeans though so if they open the track early enough it shouldn't cause too much of a problem. :-\
We can take: Small BBQ. 15kg gas canisters. I didn't ask about beer as I had a blonde moment and my mind went blank. (Seems to be a post LM thing...along with the acid flashbacks. ::))
We can't take: Generators. :(
Price: Free 8)

OK, for the Speed Chills option, I don't think we need their setup to be honest as we can sort it oursleves, unless Neil wants to offer CA "a deal"
I can't commit 100% yet as still waiting to hear when the family holiday will be, but assuming I'm free then I can bring plenty of gazebo cover as per Le Mans. In fact, even if I'm not there, CA are welcome to borrow the gazebos!!!!
We also have a toilet tent with two porta-potties (got to have a spare one while one's being emptied!!)
A couple of gas bvurners, and a gas BBQ are easy to arrange as well!!

I have a 1000Watts 12-220 Volts converter, and the above doesn't say we can't have the engine of a campervan running ;DSo I'll try and take a freezer and a fridge 8)

I know what you mean, there's only four days between returning from my family holiday and going to Donington :-\Should be really cool though to have Team JPC AND the Flying Baguettes on though 8) 8)

This is good news concerning the camping.
I still have to arrange parts of the logistics with Kruse Motorsport. I need them to carry some of my stuff over to the UK, shouldn't be too much trouble. Then it's only flying over to the UK and getting to the circuit by rental. Easy... ;D
I have no idea yet how much space I can fill in the truck but in case anyone wants something carried over from Germany please let me know and I try to sort it.

First of all the information on the Speedchills website is going to be changed as soon as they have got themselves sorted out between returning from LM and going back out to the Classic. So watch that space.
In effect Neill says that they are proposing to break down the package completely so that we can get our own race tickets, organise our own camping direct at the Donington Farm site and Speedchills offers the membership/hospitality/bar for £20. I asked about beer prices and he said they are the standard price, not marked up and its proper quality chilled beer "not Fosters".
They also have their sponsorship deal with the Creation team and he mentioned the possibility of membership people being able to visit garages and drivers coming over to the hospitality area for chit chat.
This membership fee will include a donation to charity (I didnt try and get him to commit it to Doris' fund, but we could always work on that!).
I asked Neill if he knew how far it would be from the Donington Park Farmhouse campsite to the free circuit campsite and he said that the organisers had various areas used for camping depending on the event and he would try and find out for us where the free camping that weekend would be in relation to Speedchills hospitality area.
The website for the camping is "www.parkfarmhouse.co.uk", click on "Accommodation" then "Caravan Site" - this lists all the camping prices. It is individually priced for tents, campervans, electric, etc. so depending on what you bring you can work out the price! Note gazebos are charged extra!
This campsite is open Sunday night.

So I guess if the campsite are offering electric there's no need for a genny! And if we put up one large gazebo between us then that should provide enough cover in case of a typical British summer! :-\
I've got the two large wheel along cool boxes as well. Fill them with ice beforehand and they should keep ice for the whole weekend!!

Like to make an observation, can we have just ONE person speaking directly to Speedchills and the campsite, otherwise all sorts of conflicting messages are going to be coming out. Don't mind who it is, but whoever takes up the baton would like them to run with it all the way, rather losing interest halfway through.
Paddy and Fran would appear to be the best placed so very happy with them to continue and act on my behalf and will be very happy to pick-up tasks directly from them. feel happier with some central organisation as it looks like this could be a large gathering of CA.
Don't wish this to sound like committee's and business, just want us to have a great weekend together without any problems.

If I can make it to Donnington then I will have my motorhome with fridge, a small generator as well as two Gas Cadac BBQ's (if Needed) aswell as a 40litre 3-way coolbox.
Obviously if I am in the motorhome then I have to get the van onsite.

This links to Google's satellite image showing the campsite in relation to the circuit. It looks like easy walking distance. Only thing to conside is that on private campsites there are always noise orders after 11pm! and before 7am. That is the only time I ever make any noise!
I will go with the majority on camping or hospitality options.

Seems to me a fair exchange and no robbery, can you get it cleared Rick and I guess the next thing is for JP to have an orientation drive just so he knows how everything works, don't worry about the setting up bit as you probably know how it all bolts together.
I think it is very CA spirited you laying on such a fine vehicle, have a chat with Paddy and he might be able to produce some large stickers, a bit like his trucks and JP's "Beast"

Now that I know I will have my 'van back, I'm thinking of coming to this for the weekend. If I do, I will be there probably thursday leaving Monday.
My own view is that I would prefer to book my own pitch and tickets, and between us CA people can make their own eating/drinking/fun. No disrespect to Speedchills, but do we need them?
Incidentally, how much of the campsite have they reserved? I notice Park Farmhouse have (only) 60 pitches, and we will need to get them booked pretty sharpish if that is the way we are going to go.

I spoke to Neil on Saturday (after he spoke to Fran first), and he said he was going to recalculate as it all seem too expensive and some people already bought tickets.I mailed him today as a reminder as I did not receive anything yet.
The pros to stay with Speedchills are:
*electricity
*bathrooms
*bar and food
*creation hospitality area
The con is:
*money
The pros to stay in an open field:
*no charge
The cons are:
*no facilities announced, not even bathrooms
*generator not allowed (but I can run my van's engine, and have a 220v converter)
Let's wait what SpeedChills come up with, and let's see if we can find out where that free camping field is too...

Still getting sign-off on the Creation bits but have a driver signing in there plus briefing sessions by team personnel after qually and before race.
Membership of Speed Chills will be a nominal amount with donation to charity - probably pay on arrival but book places in advance as we will have a cap on numbers.
Beer prices as per general in area, food offering TBA shortly but will include breakfast and dinner.
Summary -

It's looking more and more likely that we'll have to be at Brands for this weekend and even if we do make it we won't be camping :(
I'd check with the campsite if they allow Gazebos - many "normal" campsites now ban them due to people turning up with the cheap ones that take off at the slightest gust of wind!

They require full payment at booking. I have been speaking with them and have asked for 17 pitches initially earmarked for Club Arnage. There booking database does not allow for reservations without the money, so we need to make the bookings over the next few days, to avoid disappointment
When making your booking can you please say you are part of the CA ensemble, they will make sure that we are together as much as possible.
It works out when they come to print off the site allocation over the August bank holiday and will make sure that the four units that require electricity are near the tent pitches.
Very pleasant people at the booking office and keen to make sure we have a great stay with them.
For those of us that will be disappearing on the Sunday, if you want to leave your vehicle and kit on the campsite there is a small charge, called, race day pitch which costs 5 GBP.
The pitches are within a short walk direct into the main pits, it doesn't get better than this.
There is a camp warden and its loud noises finish at about midnight, no sweat for us.
let me know if there is anything else you would like clarified with the campsite or contact them direct but they are expecting us to make direct contact with them and if you make sure you mention Club Arnage it should be okay.

The pitches are within a short walk direct into the main pits, it doesn't get better than this.
There is a camp warden and its loud noises finish at about midnight, no sweat for us.
let me know if there is anything else you would like clarified with the campsite or contact them direct but they are expecting us to make direct contact with them and if you make sure you mention Club Arnage it should be okay.

What I'd add to this is that you don't have to mention gazebos or extras at this time. We can erect these in the best possible position when we get there. We can all chuck into a kitty to pay for these and any 'communal' electricity.

We have contacted the site to try to get group rates, and were told that we couldn't, as it is a bank holiday and race weekend. Reading between the lines, they expect to be full!!

The other option is the 'field' where there will be camping at the circuit itself - this is free on a first come first served basis, but has no facilities, apart from the grass.

Damn and I was hoping to leave it until the last minute! Not sure if the van will have road tax next month yet! If it doesn't I doubt I will be there!
Don't mind paying a deposit but paying in FULL??? With a motorhome and electrics that is going to cost me more than i expect as a deposit! Normally campsite ask for a £5-£10 deposit.

Looking like I'll be able to make it but still cannot commit until the holiday in the Med is booked! Still happy to lend whatever kit might be required of course even if I can't make it (but definately hoping to be there!
How are they booking pitches? i.e........is??
One Car and One Tent = One Pitch
One Car and Two Tents = Two Pitches
i.e. If I can only commit at the last minute and jump in a car with someone else, can I pitch an extra tent somewhere?
I know it's probably already covered somewhere or it's on a web site but I'm tired and Knackered.
BTW, can't see anything about Smokie attending?? I thought he was going to every race under the stars this year??

It is charged per tent plus number of adults for each night with 1 car per tent included - if you see what i mean!
So it would cost the same if you jump in someone else's car and have your own tent as it would if you drive down on your own and have your own tent!

I told them it was a VW Camper not a motorhome!. Guess you said it was a caravan? = Car + Camping thing. But then why would it be more then a car and a 6 man tent?? I get ver confused with prices.
Why not £10 per pitch for two people, extra people pay £1, If you don't have enough room get another pitch! Electrics at £3 a night is resonable especially at 10A!!! What you put on the pitch is up to you and it is much easier to manage.

I am no longer then a VW Passat! Yet on the boats I pay over three times the price to a passat with Bikes on the roof??

In comparison, stayed at a lovely site in Beaumont sur Sarthe (just N of LM)tues night. OK, only me, the car and 'van, but for €6.35 for the night including electricity it was a steal. The block sanitaire was one of the best I have evercome across encountered.
Worth remembering this site if you ever need need one close to LM eg if you travel down Sunday and can't get onto the circuit sites.

When everything just gets too much, I occasionally pack my bags and head for the Lake District with a bootfull of beer.
There's a field, that my old man used to take me to, where I camp up next to a babbling ice cool river, and I usually drive my tent pegs in with a 20lb sledge and get back to nature for a few days. In a corner of the field, shaded by conifers is a, - well I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's smallish, stone built and very dark. I've seen some women from a nearby campsite, and some lost walkers try to crap in there. They either come out after a few minutes, very pale and quiet, or dash out immediately, screaming and waving their arms. I once saw a spider emerge, blinking, threaten a few sheep and a passing osprey, and then swagger back in. If the shepherd spots the tent, he comes over, usually around 6am, and charges me a pound per night. Even though I recognise him from childhood, I suspect he's a member of the 'Alternative Shepherds Union', - he usually arrives with a miniature poodle wearing a natty little coat, and he once put a sign up outside my tent while I was asleep that said "NO FIRES AT ALL".
What he'd make of electricity I'm not sure.
I think you should get back to basics, never mind all this campervan/caravan business, you'll feel better for it.

I know the one you mean stayed there many a time, River runs alongside if I remember rightly? The American Motorhome can't make it round the entrance gate we found out a couple of years ago.

Neil from Speedchills has been in touch with me again so this is the latest from them:
1. Speedchills hospitality/membership is now £5 in advance or £10 on the door. Monies to be actually paid on the day but you need to register your name on their website to get the discounted price. www.speedchills.com/lms_dp_book_request.htm. 2. As far as the Creation team side of things go Neil says: “Creation plan is to have post-practice and pre-race briefings from a member of the team plus driver signing session (time TBA) . We are working on pit visits – we had 3 x 1 hour sessions at Le Mans on the Saturday evening – see photos in the 2006 review on www.speedchills.com . Would a Q&A with Keiron Salter the designer of the Creation car be of interest – with the 2007 for a LMP1 coupe announced this might be of interest to the more technical?”
3. Neil has also asked if CA might be interested in a Le Mans Quiz on the Saturday evening – time not yet fixed, but the idea would probably be early evening before the brain cells start to “fade”? This would be a fund raiser for Doris’s collection and it is proposed that there is an entry fee of £2 per person (max team size 4 people) 100% of monies raised going to charity. Possible prize of a Creation pit visit during the race – (subject to confirmation). Anyone fancy showing off their knowledge? 2. As far as the Creation team side of things go Neil says: “Creation plan is to have post-practice and pre-race briefings from a member of the team plus driver signing session (time TBA) . We are working on pit visits – we had 3 x 1 hour sessions at Le Mans on the Saturday evening – see photos in the 2006 review on www.speedchills.com . Would a Q&A with Keiron Salter the designer of the Creation car be of interest – with the 2007 for a LMP1 coupe announced this might be of interest to the more technical?”
3. Neil has also asked if CA might be interested in a Le Mans Quiz on the Saturday evening – time not yet fixed, but the idea would probably be early evening before the brain cells start to “fade”? This would be a fund raiser for Doris’s collection and it is proposed that there is an entry fee of £2 per person (max team size 4 people) 100% of monies raised going to charity. Possible prize of a Creation pit visit during the race – (subject to confirmation). Anyone fancy showing off their knowledge? I know the one you mean stayed there many a time, River runs alongside if I remember rightly? The American Motorhome can't make it round the entrance gate we found out a couple of years ago.
Great site though I agree.
That's the one Rick - right on the Sarthe. Only just managed to squeeze in with my 'van. Once through the barrier, there is also a tight little stone bridge to get over with a sharp corner on the other side - also a tight squeeze.
Very tranquil site though.

Yes I do know, Paddy. The picture shows the car on the front (UK) off-side, and IIRC the fuel filler is on the other side, so can't tell if the picture was taken pre- or post- LM24. Well, logic tells me it has to be pre-, as the car looks like it is moving!! (Sorry....)

Hi all,
Rumours of us reaching capacity for Speed Chills Bar & Grill at Donington are unfounded. We still have capacity.
We have draught lager from the Cotswold Brewing Company and ales from the Ridgeway Brewery.
We will have the quiz (Rich - the boys and girls from the KK who 'won' at Le Mans cannot enter as it is largely the same one!). This will be on Saturday evening after the (unconfirmed) Creation driver visit.
I've seen the menu and it looks great with veggie option too. Homemade chilli and rice on the Saturday evening is £4.95 and a bacon and egg breakfast bap is £3.50 (I think). So simple, but good quality and freshly prepared.

On Sunday SpeedChills will not be there and if we are doing a large cookup on either Friday or Saturday then a big gazeebo will be usefull if it really pisses it down.
If JP is unable make it I may be able to take one of the "JPC team" gazeebos up there as I am only 20mins from JP.

I'll bring my gazebo, its easier to put up than Mark's kit, we'll get caught for a charge from the campsite so I'll have the begging bowl out.

Just a point - the campsite charge £5 per night per gazebo, so we would be better off with the 6x3. On the other hand, split among all of us, the cost becomes incidental.
I will also have a small gas BBQ - but it's not big enough for a mass cook-out!
There's a microwave in the 'van which may be useful, but keep Lawnmower Man away from it!

I went over Millau not long after it had opened. Just incredible.
Rusty / Fran - if you've got time drive down into Millau itself and get a look at the viaduct from ground level. It's amazing!!!

The Millau bridge is really a fine piece of work. Went over it last month on my way to the south of France! But driving over it isn't as spectacular as on the Pont de Normandie, which is smaller, but very "open".

steve, make sure you have told the campsite that you are with the club arnage group, it is important otherwise there is a good chance you may be some distance from us! mind you that can't be a bad thing!!

Okey Dokey. Back from my Hols, sorted the van insurance claim (for what it was worth!) and am now back n the land of the living!!
So, do I need to bring anything to Donnington?? Gazebo? Gas Burners?

The PlanetLeMans-guys will be 4 strong, including Stranger. They will fly in on Friday morning, and leave Sunday night. Drinking for Holland will arrive on Friday by campervan around tea-time carrying 7 people, departure Monday morning early (7-ish).

My plan would be to drive up straight from Work on Friday then probably leave Sunday after the race. Or I might do the family bit at home Friday and head up early on Saturday morning and leave early Monday morning.
Spoke to Rick C. this evening and he mentioned that most people were going to join Speed Chills and use their facilities Saturday night?
Is anyone doing a mass meal that we're all chipping in towards (i.e. is Bob doing his famous Curry or is anyone taking care of breakfasts) or is everyone doing their own thing?
I know it's probably been mentioned elsewhere but I can't be bothered to sift through 18 pages when someone will know straight away ;)

BTW, I think its about 6m x3m, its one of those expanding type structures, it needs four to erect it ;)

speedchills have waived their 5 squid membership fee, I have suggested we still give this to Neil of speedchills as he will then donate it to Doris's charity. Seems fair to me as we can then have a very nice meeting place at any time over the weekend and can all join in the LM quiz Saturday night, proceeds also being donated to Doris. so we can do some more good.

I think most of us have registered with Speedchills - they have waived the fee - so we can use them or not. They close at the start of the race on Sunday.

Bob is doing his curry on Saturday night, but I don't think he can do enough for us all. I have booked mine!! After that, there is the quiz at SC.
Breakfast seems to be an individual thing, although I am cooking for Bob when he arrives Sat morning. Could fit you in as well if you want.

8) i have just booked to stay on the donington farmhouse campsite on saturday night... should be arriving sometime on saturday afternoon and probably leaving on sunday evening. have asked to camp near to CA crowd. it's possible that rowena will be with me but i won't know until tomorrow... my sis has decided not to make the trip after giving herself alcohol poisoning on sunday ::) lightweight! see you on saturday, vicky

I'm down to just one now - Mrs D slipped on some wet tiles and has cracked two bones in her foot (I'll have to hide that whisky bottle in future).
All that means I'll be there a bit earlier as I won't have the speed limiter in the car, and I'll have to do my own cooking, unless..................

I have been talking to the owner of the campsite this afternoon. They think that due to the high number of CAers attending a few changes to the booking regarding the facilities is in order.
They have realised that a certain amount of segregation would be beneficial to both parties.
I put forward a couple of suggestions and they have agreed to implement them before the weekend.

Can I just say that we've two newbies with us at the weekend. Pete's lad Dan is 18 and this is, I think his first motor racing event never mind LMES. Mike's lad, little Sam is only five and we're expecting a great future for him as an eventual Le Mans stalwart.

absolutely and a Canberra as well plus few others, sometimes the aircraft are open and you are allowed into the cockpits, the Vulcan is very cramped, especially the AEOp/Nav area, all facing rearwards and NO ejector seats.

Just been looking at the aeropark website and noticed they only charge £1 entrance fee with children free. I know it's only a static display but surely a quid a visit dosn't even cover staff costs let alone the upkep of the aircraft.

Yes, I will also be, sadly, elsewhere. Or more exactly, at "Casa de Mí", fitting architrave, skirting board, 2 x bathroom sanitaryware and doing a spot of painting and decorating.
The long house mods are now (hopefully) coming to a close, albeit delayed waiting for the plasterer to skim the walls - you try getting a skilled plasterer when you want one.
Carpets are coming in 2 weeks, then we can move in.
Have a beveraged time at Donnington, at least I'll be in the dry!

Andy - after your contributions to the JV Thread and now this throw away comment I am interested to know whether anybody, no matter how succesful they are in their chosen field, actaully commands your full respect and if so who and why?

Now that's a good question, Oldtimer.
I know he has a very good friend who (after lengthy training) is able to masturbate at 15 minute intervals for 24 hours, - he once once cranked a couple out in the Tadge Mahal. Just arrived back from Donnington.............Pesky took lmp1 and 3 British Class wins to boot!!!

I hold plenty of people in the highest esteem, wonderful men like Harry Worth, that trick with the arms and legs in the mirror was out of the top drawer. I'm a great fan, obviously, of Kenneth Baker the former conservative cabinet minister, not to mention Whistling Jack Smith (I was Kaiser Bills' Batman), all legends in their repective fields. It's a difficult one this Oldy, I'm not really sure if you've got a nice line in ultra-dry humour or you just don't get it.
Anyway, thank God Chris Adams listened to me, it was a very close run thing. Needless to say, as soon as Sussex set off on their lap of honour around Lords, Captain Fantastic made a point of coming straight over to where I was standing on the boundary by the Tavern Stand, shaking my hand and thanking me for my advice. I like to think that in some small way I played a part in this wonderful victory. Next, to win the County Championship...

H, Chris sends his regards to you. He's just back from a week's holiday with his girlfriend in the Commer. They ostensibly spent their time touring the Shropshire Hills, but surely even navigating the Brown Clee can't do that to the suspension; the rear leaf springs now bend the wrong way, the sink's blocked and there's shock absorber fluid everywhere. And as for the state of the kingpin on the offside, you'd have thought it had never seen a grease gun in it's life, which leads me to think he must have been concentrating on Kenneth Baker.

Bob - weather was OK at Donny on Monday morning - windy but dry. Started raining a bit late on Sunday night though, about 10.00pm I think (but it could well have been midnight!!).
