Title: Peter Dumbreck flying Merc article.
Post by: Steve Pyro on April 27, 2006, 08:08:01 pm
Peter Dumbreck has written a piece for TOP Gear Magazine Online about his flying incident in the Mercedes CLR in 1999 here http://www.topgear.com/content/features/stories/2006/04/stories/18/1.html

Must have damaged his headin the crash. He says Mercedes hadn't won since 1952. Surely the Sauber win in1989 counts as a win for Mercedes too.
Maybe not a works team but a Mercedes non the less.

BTW my Le Mans nickname stems from this incident

seems to be all the rage reserecting old threads.

There is an article in the latest issue of GTO (Dutch performance mag). One of those famous pics is printed in that mag, think I'll scan it in for display on our scaffolding...

Peter Dumbreck said:
"Another CLR driven by Mark Webber had already back-flpped in the warm-up. "

Peter Dumbreck said:
"I just knew something would happen that day at Le Mans"

Pure logic... I love it.  ;D

Still, thank you Steve for the article... an interesting read. The piece about Peter being breathanalysed is just hilarious. I'm glad he got away with it.

As I recall, didnt Mark Webber also get ever so slightly airborne and land on the tail end in one of the qualifying sessions on Thursday?   I thought the idea was for him to go out on the warm up Saturday morning to boost his confidence again!!!

But as with so much at Le Mans, I might just have imagined that bit....  ;D

Yes, that's right Fran.
The first 'flight' was Webber in evening qualifying.
Merc then 'fixed' the cause.
Webber then flew again in the warm-up and the car was withdrawn.
These were both 'minor' flights with a flip over and back onto the circuit.

Finally, Dumbreck had a Wright Brothers moment in the early part of the race and that, as they say, was that!

Yeh, the whole team was pull together by Nobert to decide whether they raced or not. they made there desision and anounced their start with increased balast in the nose of the car.
I actually still have the download movie clip of the incident where he tried to OVERTAKE Martin Brundles' Toyota on the drop to Indianapolis.
If you want to see it again, please tell this numpty how to attach it.

Sadly i do too. it still make the mind boggle how it took 5 hours into the race.
Lucky for Peter,  i noticed on the thursday lap i made on the Bike they had chopped those trees down on the left as you drop out of the woodland section.

And here is Roger Warrick's painting of the incident from his flying car art series. Those who have been to Sebring the last two years should know who Roger Warrick is.

That was my first year at Le Mans
Listening to Radio LeMans, they posed the question....

Norbert...
One car got airborne in qualifying,
Another got airborne in the warm up..
Do you want to take the third car out...

Dunbreck...
Can I phone a friend? :)

I guess this will only resonate with our UK correspondents but in the following year there were some enterprising guys selling T shirts with the message 'My Lord, won't you fly me a Mercedes Benz' emblazoned across the front.

Needless to say I was wearing one in 2000....

Aint that the same Peter Dumbreck that flew out of the corner with a DTM-car during the Zandvoort 2004 race? Wrecked his car completly with it.
