Title: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Jack911 on March 20, 2006, 01:51:40 pm I'm going to Le Mans this year and I want to insure my 1994 911 for breakdown in Europe as well as the UK.
I think the fact that it's more than ten years old can have an impact on this. Can anyone offer any advice or recommend any insurers? Thanks. Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Ferrari Spider on March 20, 2006, 02:06:17 pm I use Liverpool Victoria, Bournemouth for my "Fiat" and other cars cheapest and best insurers I have come across in a long while, also Civil Service Motoring Association, you may not be eligible for membership but worthwhile joining if you can. They use Britannia rescue, very good used them twice in about 35 years, faultless service at a very reasonable price.
The Fiat insurance is stunning, PM and I will explain in more detail Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Lorry on March 20, 2006, 02:37:59 pm See the breakdown cover thread
"Stu - I paid £28 for the car for 9 days over the internet with http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/index.html" They cover cars up to 15 years old, but its 50% more. Caravans are free. Thanks for the reminder Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Snoring Rhino on March 20, 2006, 05:20:25 pm That looks good lorry, £24 for the MG, paid £32 last year.
Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Lorry on March 20, 2006, 06:17:12 pm AA 5 star is £94.26 for me, or £28 with Vehicle Rescue. Hard one that, as the actress said to the Bishop. ;D
Shame the ACO have stopped their very basic cover, as I'm only after a little comfort. 30 years with the RAC and I've called them out 3 times. Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Martini...LB on March 20, 2006, 09:30:04 pm Hi try www.insureandgo.com it was cheap last year.
Martini Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: IanS on March 24, 2006, 08:18:46 pm Could be worth trying a specialist like Footman James, whose annual car insurance policies include European breakdown and recovery. 01215614196
Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Paddy_NL on March 24, 2006, 11:49:06 pm Aren't ACO members partly covered in the Le Mans area? I don't speak much French, but thought I understood that from my membership letter :-\
Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: smokie on March 28, 2006, 01:22:41 am Yes, ACO is a recovery service for all of France (and some of Belgium I believe). But it is simply that - they tow you to the nearest garage and leave you to it. I guess most people will want additional cover like onward travel, repatriation of unrepairable motors etc.
Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: DelBoy on March 28, 2006, 01:29:28 am Is this still offered with ACO membership??
I've just got my renewal through, and there is no mention of it in the colour brochure they send out. Looking back at old ones, there was also no mention of it in last years, but all previous ones from 2004 there was specific details about it. On the other hand, the renewal form still asks for the details of your three cars!!! Del Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Lawnmower Man on March 28, 2006, 02:47:50 am Ahhh The joys of not owning the Car. The Leasing company we use provides all the Five Star and so on. Not that that helps.

Just had my new membership card and details through the post, and it details the breakdown cover. As Smokie says, it is a bit limited. Del Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Lorry on April 18, 2006, 02:17:23 pm Interesting. The recovery and free program were the only reason I joined. The renewal documentation doesn't mention recovery, and 93 Euros is a bit steep, if you're not buying tickets. I think ordinary membership is cheaper than that. I've given up.
Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: DelBoy on April 18, 2006, 02:28:50 pm You still get it Lorry.
The brochure which comes with the new card atates: - one free breakdown/tow truck intervention - loan of replacement car for one day in France if the repairs are scheduled to take longer than 5 hours, or if the car is immobilised for more than 24 hours. You also get emergency roadside assistance 24/7, and it does not specify any limitations on this. Not great, but for me it's free. I save more than the 93 euros on the the tickets I buy. Del Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: Lorry on April 18, 2006, 02:45:31 pm Well I've decided that http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/index.html at £28 and E5 for a program will be cheaper. And I'll get the free dvd with the program.
I bought a second program last year just for the free Steve McQueen film and then had to by the machine to play it on. Shame Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: bgeorge104 on April 18, 2006, 04:18:28 pm Do you belong to the Porsche Club GB, because if you do you will get a bit of a discount with RAC.
In 2003 we went to the South of France in our Porsche 944 S2, and it broke when we arrived in the South of France. We were covered by RAC breakdown and recovery. A part on our airconditioning broke, and it took them 2 weeks to fix it. My husband drove on Saturday morning from South of France to Le Mans we arrived at 3am on Sunday. We went to sleep for a couple of hours and watch the last 6 hours of so in our ACO grand stand. It gets better they never re-gased our air conditioning, so we drove to Le Mans in temperature of 36C outside temperature. We had to drink warm water. The RAC did pay for our accommodation in the South of France. We now have a VW. Errr....don't think I'm eligable with an Audi!! ... My husband drove on Saturday morning from South of France to Le Mans we arrived at 3am on Sunday. That's a minimum of 15 hours driving - was it on the back of a recovery truck?? We now have a VW. Don't blame you :-\ :-\ :-\ Del Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: bgeorge104 on April 20, 2006, 02:31:44 pm Del Boy - Yes we left Cagnes-Sur-Mer, near Nice in the afternoon and only stop for petrol and McDonalds. Hubby eat McDonalds, while I went into Carfour for water. Luckly we were staying with a French lady that we meet at in the ACO shop at Le Mans. We arrive at about 3am on the Sunday morning.
It has not put us of going to the South of France for the week before Le Mans. Last year we went to Alpe D'Huez, so hubby could cycle up it. We left the Alpes last year at 10am and got to Le Mans Carfour, just before it closed. The time in 6 week we will be waiting to get on the ferry to France. Title: Re: European Breakdown Cover Post by: bgeorge104 on April 20, 2006, 04:11:22 pm They fixed our car. We only got it back at 12pm on the Saturday.
