Title: Camping gear
Post by: Piglet on March 17, 2006, 09:55:28 pm
I'm sorry, I know this is a girlie topic!

I've just bought some of these... http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16215&category_id=253

and they are fantastic!  They require a bit of puff to get them inflated the first time as they have been factory packed.  They are very long though (202cm) so make sure you've got room in your tent but if you're tall they are fantastic.

They are really good value for self-inflating beds, you'd pay more for thermarest and I think they are better than the thinner thermarest that I have.

I ordered at 8pm on Wednesday night and they arrived today by courier with no extra shipping charge.

they also do a very cheap funky headlight so you can see your way for a piss in the dark!!  ;D

I'm interested.  I bought a sofa bed last and far from happy as the bl**dy thing lets air out all through the night and by morning its at ground level.

Is this one better?  Have you used one before?

This what i had..........

Hi Peter

I understand (and I'm a bit of an anorak on camping I'm afraid!) that if you want an airbed you want one of these http://www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acatalog/Outdoor_Megastore_Air_Beds_262.html which is the Coleman dual chamber confort airbed so that you and you're lovely wife (nurse) can inflate your own side in which ever way you wish (this is really difficult to do without resorting to inuendo!!  ;D).

As far as self inflating mattresses go the Fat Aric seems very good, it's thicker than the thermarest I've got and is significantly cheaper.  I can't feel the ground through it (even with my arse  ;D) although they are on carpet at the moment.

Personally I don't like airbeds, I can't be bothered with all that blowing up and then they always seem to go down on me (see how difficult this is  ;D).

The Fat Aric seems pretty good and is plenty long enough for Keith to sleep on and he's 6ft 2 and fairly broad.

This all sounds good, I'll have a think on it but the Coleman looks the trick.

BTW, I just know what you mean about all the blowing, you seem to spend hours puffing only to find its all gone down and limp in your hands before you've got into bed. ;D

The amount of times last year I found my Ar*e on the cold ground.  The first two or three nights were bloody perishers, I put clothes on to go to bed!

... and to make things worse I clicked the link and went right to the "jewellery" section :-\!

Regarding inflatables, I have used a cheap airbed for the last few years and despite some fairly comprehensive testing I havent really suffered  deflation problems.  If it does start to droop slightly a bit of a blow to top up around mid-week usually sees me through to the end of the race alright!  ;D

Hmmm , I think I got that sorted out without any double entendres slipping in!  ::)

Favorite bargin place, Costco, have a king size blow up mattress with a built in inflator (240v) for about £30, we've had one for about 2 years, its great, dosent go down.
For LM we use £7.99 camp beds from Argos, not the most comfortable, but OK and at least no deflation and up above any floods and better than sleeping on the ground with spiky grass.

For some unknown reason nothing happens, I've clicked and puffed everywhere, but no luck, is it my technique?

Sometimes less is more FS, try just using the fingertip gently......it works for me  ;)

(Yep, still managing to avoid sounding saucy on this topic ...  :)  )

Look.  I'm an ole' hand at all this and well aware of the need for less is more and the just using the figer tip for punting etc.

But none-the-less still can't get the thing to do it's thing.

Frustrated of the New Forest.

I'm glad to see that you're managing to keep this topic clean boys and girls!!   ;D

You'll be pleased to hear mine is still hard here this morning (it's a bit of a boys joke really - it doesn't work as well for me does it?  ;D)

Yes, tried that, also tried speed/frequency, even tried blowing cool air across it, still won't work.

This is all you need, can't breaks them , no one would steal one , if you lost it  , it wouldn't matter.

Not too comfortable that you prefer staying in your tent rather than getting up and out.

If you mean the Bushcraft mat, then you're absolutely right. No one would steal one because they are an uncomfortable waste of money.  :)

Last link didn't work (better luck this time)- I really have no problem with this type of mat. Comfort is clearly a personal view.

Wouldn't go as far as this though!

Here's my 'camping mat'  - half of which (the right hand half!!)  is currently not booked up for the week on MB.  Any of you lady CAers wish to grab a comfy spot for the week?

(I know, I know.....someone had to lower the tone - but after all it is Sunday afternoon after a very liquid lunch!!)

I am not sure i like the look of the bloke behind the bed of nails!!  :-\

Industrial rubber gloves, hose pipe and a bucket are not the kind of accessories that usually go with a nice afternoon in the park!!   He looks like a potential recruit for Team Zarse....  :o

(the right hand half!!)

Is that the right half as you look at it, or the right half once you are on it, even then it would depend if you were face up or face down!!!  ???

Sorry, but I'm with DelBoy on this one.  {Kid just finished playing with new toy mode} Comfortable beds/sheets/duvet/gas cookers/heating/cocktail cabinet/hot and cold running water with a shower do make life a little easier.  Electric flush on the bog, and a cutlery drawer too. {/mode off}

Now what did happen at Sebring?  Let me guess, the Audis shot off and everybody else crashed in the black smoke?
