Title: First time on HA
Post by: MIKE C (Liverpool Boys) on March 13, 2006, 03:48:44 pm
We came to Le Mans for the first time last year, and stayed with the Liverpool Boys on MB. This year I could only get passes for HA, Which is fine, and we are looking forward to it. I would like some advice on HA as I have a mobile home. eg what is the water supply like, and is the bog the same as MB last year, or do I need a bigger stick to beat it down with. Any other advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Mike

Welcome to the Club Arnage - Houx Annexe Chapter.

There are 3 loo/shower blocks kept to the same standard as elsewhere so your current stick should work fine.

There are standpipes scattered around the site.

Access to the hypermarket is only a short drive up to terte rouge hang a left and your onto the main road towards the Carrefour.

Its a short 10 min walk to terte rouge, or up to the access point by the Dunlop Bridge.

Forgot to say, if dry it will get very dusty.

Also don't pitch too low down in the field. In 1998 it flooded, but there was a helll of a lot of rain in just two hours. There are plenty of pitches on higher ground. Make sure you are not too far from a standpipe as I take it you will run out of water from time to time, so get there earlier to guarantee. It is probably my second favorite site as it still has an atmosphere a bit more wild then MB but it benifits on being close to Tertre Rouge and the Carrefor in LM. Plus the Tertre Rouge Bar.!!!!

Hi Mike. I look forward to meeting you on HA. You will find that Steve Brown, Perdu and myself will usually be situated in the more refined area of HA, dusty, but definately more refined. Well we like to think so anyway.
Look out for the CA flags and join us for a beer and our Friday night firework display.

Without wishing to "colour" the view, I seem to remember this being discussed before.  How on earth can you describe HA refined or the people that camp there REFINED.

If you're looking for elegance and refinement there is only one place to be and that is MB.  This is born out by that most of the CA clan will be at MB irrespective where they may be camping because of our hospitality, bon vive, and overall style.

Why on earth would you want to camp near a ditch and out in the open without shade?

I'll be round for my normal libation in the Fiat, is that is still okay Steve ;D

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: Bob U on March 14, 2006, 01:04:57 pm
Peter.  I am not saying that HA in general is more refined than MB, only our small part of it. We are creatures of habit and have always camped there. We consider ourselves an outpost of the CA empire and  we try to bring a little of our brand of culture to the rest of the sight.

Think of it as missionary work if you will and remember the stirling work done by early British explorers in introducing christianity to parts of darkest Africa.

You are welcome to don pith helmit and safari suit and visit us while we are persuing  this worthwile cause.

Bob, I've seen the campsite ;D, refined my a**e ;D

While we are on the subject of positioning Missionary work!  How about educating the locals to English as a form of everyday communication.

Don't get me started on what US Europeans have done in enlightening races to the error of their ways!!

Hope your stay is as comfortable as possible on Refined HA among all those old Yankee bangers ;D

LOL @ you lot!!!  ;D

I have to agree with my learned colleague Mr Spider - MB is of course the most refined of all refined places and is the only place to be seen at LM (in ones CA tshirt of course  ;D)

One is already planning ones menu for the event.......

As a MB veteran, I don't think that even the Brethren could come up with anything to lower the standards, but will add to the character and colour of the place

Now Now Del, Rusty and the Tribe are coming over for a looksee so we should welcome them with open arms and ensure they have an agreeable stay.  Otherwise they'll be heading back to KN.

Any ideas how close they will camping to us?  Assuming you will be using part of the DfH/Team JPC ranch area ;D

I said to Rusty a few weeks ago that I would keep him space so I guess he will be near by. Was he interested in the generator??

As I said, Peter, only joking.

Yes, I hope to be in the 'Platinum Triangle' (Smokie has the 'Golden Triangle), more or less where we were last year.

BTW, glad you are up and about again, and if you are unable to partake of any alcoholic refreshment, it is better than the alternative.  What are you going to do with all the money you are saving??

Its all good fun, t'aint it Del!!!

Hoping to have a few beers, probably the same as last year.  Like to keep a clear head so I can go out around the circuit especially at night and enjoy the atmosphere.  Can't see much point going all that way and get bladdered and make a pratt of myself.

See you soon Del.

Do you think it is time for WHO, WHEN, WHERE.  To be resurrected?

Post by: MIKE C (Liverpool Boys) on March 14, 2006, 11:29:16 pm
I seem too sence some friendly banter about which of the two sites is best. Them being MB were I stayed last year with the Liverpool Boys, and across the road From JPC, and the best Floor show I had seen for years being DFH, And the Chooper Fly Past, Took me back to 1969 when I had a Mk1 version(Thank you Mr Toad and the Lads). So as some one with no pre-conceptions about HA I am just looking forward to being at LM and having a laugh where ever I am. Even if it does take me a week and a new sand pit for kid when I get home, to clean out the camper. At the end of the day you will sleep anywhere after 12 pints of Stella.

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: rcutler on March 14, 2006, 11:35:00 pm
We were just between you and DFH in the motorhome across the road, we have been allowed to leave a lot of the LM gear inside!!! Cleaning out wasn't too bad, But then MB doesn't have a dust problem like Houx Annexxe. I would get a flycurtain for the doorway otherwise you could be sweeping dust out for the next year. (or just keep the door shut).

Title: Re: First time on HA

Thanks for the tip, I will put the full awning up this year, so it should help keep the dust down.

Hi Mike

Wherever you park your motorhome, you'll have a great time.  :) I think every campsite has it's own atmosphere, but although they are all different, they are all also special in their own way! And wherever you stay, make sure you call by Team JPC on MB. As we said last year, any friends of the Liverpool Boys is a frined of ours!!!  :D

Reminds me of a programme I saw at the weekend, some sort of quiz show called 8 out of 10 Cats or something like that with Jimmy Carr.

Anyway Les Dennis was on it and he was moaning that people come up to him in Asda and ask if he's Les Dennis and when he says yes they don't believe him and why would he be shopping in Asda. He said "What do they think there is some sort of celebrity Asda where all the stars shop?"

Sean Lock replied "There is, you just haven't been invited." Pi55ed myself.

Didn't the ACO blurb state that all motorhomes/RVs etc were being herded onto a particular camp site?

Can't put my hands on the documents at the moment, but will look them out tonight.

They wont stop us this year. We are not going to be polite and speak French to them.

I think it has said that on the tickets for years though. So I wouldn't worry

I'm with you Rick, nobody said a word last year on MB. This year we have 2 passes, so if you go by what they say we are intitled to, is an area of 14m x 10m. That is well enough room for my motor home and my mates car. We can only see what daft ideas they have this year, it all adds to the fun.

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: Robspot on March 15, 2006, 04:29:37 pm
Alas my friend, if that were so.

2 pitches 7x5 would give you 14x5 or 7x10

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: Ferrari Spider on March 15, 2006, 04:55:48 pm
I just wish I took some pics of the ACO officials measuring and white lining the 7 x 5 metre pitches last year on MB.  To begin with the gravel run offs were done, and then some of the grassy bits, obviously not many campers at this point as it was Monday morning.

Eventually they arrived near us, Team JPC and DfH etc, just mesmerising as they spoke with Gazza who was asking Pitbull  if he could speak French.

By this time they had given up attempting the pitch marking, too bigger a site and they had four officials and one measuring tape.  Trying to find out how many needed to pay the additional camping charge, Gazza and Mark sorted it ;D

Post by: Stu on March 15, 2006, 05:45:27 pm
I would hate camping on the gravel traps. I could'nt believe they marked them up. Some pissed of people though when they arrived on Friday with camper vans and of course there was no space.

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: jpchenet on March 15, 2006, 05:49:15 pm
I think the notification about Motor Homes is that you cannot use the car parks with them any more. If you try to park in a car park, they will put you in the "bivouac" area and charge you extra as for years people have been taking huge motor homes and parking them in the normal (cheap) car parks and still using them to sleep in which caused arguments when car owners then tried to copy them by putting tents up next to their cars.

Title: Re: First time on HA
Post by: Lorry on March 15, 2006, 05:58:01 pm
God alone knows what they will do this year.  My caravan and awning is about 7 x 5.  So where do I put the car? and the pool, the bar etc.  Sorry lads you'll have to squeeze up a bit.

I thought that under French law there had to be a 3 metre fire gap between units too

I have only ever seen them move someone from a pitch on the houx annexe once, and that was a 52 seater coach converted into a tour bus.

As long as you don't take the piss they will leave you alone.

They measured out motorhome last year and said it was bigger than two piches so we needed make it smaller!!!!!

Paddy then showed them the 30 odd tickets and they hurried away.

I have two again this year but we really need two more. as we have two more cars aswell.

They left us alone last year even on the Monday - waved as they drove their little van past but no probs at all.  Didn't even have to pay the supplement for the extra days!

We got away with the supplement as well. Every time they came round to collect it they told them that the organiser (me) was at the shops and they should come back to see me later. They never did!

Peter, Thanks for the offer, and I may put a few Euro's in Doris's bucket, but my Dads business partmer had a selection of Farrari's in the later 80's. eg 512bb and 3 testarossa's. They looked great but spent most of there time in the garage being fixed. When they were right they when like stink. The thing is there is know othere sound like a big yank V8. I have to put with a bit of fun in my old Scoobie, so I am a bit of a heathen. ;D with jap car, which unfortunatly I can't bring as I have to drive the camper.

My Ferrari dealer refuses to sell me a 512bb or bbi on the grounds it would bankrupt me, as i tend to drive my cars hard and long, 13k miles a year is not unusual for me.

Have been lucky to drive a 512bbi full race around the Silverstone GP circuit, what an experience.

Would like a 12 at some stage, probably from the 60/70's, bit of a gentleman's tourer would do me.

Just what I've been waiting for 8)

Refined, my ar*e, lets have a look at a couple of shots of a typical HA encampment, looks like the pikey's have already arrived, nail your kit down, GIRLS.

As you can see it has all the appeal of camping along a derelict hallway, roadway one-side and dirt-track t'other side, latrine trench as a separator.

So refined, all the "oldest" mod-cons for a weeks camping at LM are there,  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Turning, to red cars, only someone with poor taste would choose red unless it was for out and out racing, oh dear, all those yankee cars seem to be red, pardon me must be refined as they are squatters   East Anglian Cobra replica Club on HA.

No worries Martin, as one of our poorer, disadvantaged, cousin's you can always pop over and visit one of your well healed better-off Uncles on MB for a hot-shower, ice cold beer and gourmet food, but you make sure you use the back door, wouldn't want one of our neighbours to see you. ;D

MB is all very well if you want to live next to a busy road but if you would prefer the country manor lifestyle HA is the place... imagine... green pastures with a rolling landscape, the enchanting song of early morning birds, the rustle of the trees and the trundling almost sedate ice lorry with the heartening call of the vendor of 'Glace, glace', I can almost hear it now. Heaven...        Glace..... glace  ever quieter as he trundles along the path gently kicking up a little dust and finally disappearing into the distance... glace... glace... glace.

To be honest I'd rather the Glace to the glug glug bog sucker which comes most days to relieve the pressure for the temp bogs.  Smokie can tell you more as he camps within spitting distance, hence the name the golden triangle, some years it has been known for the quantity to exceed the capacity!!!

Some of the tents are down slope of the cess pit.  Smokie knows.

Sounds a bit dangerous to me, waking up in the morning with your tent flying down a slope in a 'log' rolling competition. It gives a whole new meaning to the idea of a portable toilet tent. What a stinker. I, on the other hand, abide approx one minute from the latrines opposite the hole in the wall, on flat ground of course. Where any self respecting person might want to visit for tiffin. Seated 'neath the gazebo...pleasant. One does occasionally receive visitors, and I may add pleased to do so.

When I started this it was only to ask advice on HA, but I seem to have staired up a hornets nest between HA and MB. I didn't know this existed because the Liverpool Boys didn't or forgot to tell me.  Now as the new boy, and having spent a great time on MB last year, and hope for as good this year on HA with Steve and Bob and the rest of the lads on the site. I have decided to do a star rating when I  get back, so you can all shout at me  ;D. But I do promise to be fair on all counts. I will be visiting MB to see the LB's and FS as I promised. It should be good for a laugh when we get back.

Lets hope for good weather, cold beer and a great time.
All the best to you all.

It doesn't really exist, Mike - it's just the pre-June nerves.  When we get within 90 days of the off, the adrenalin starts to flow a lot stronger and we have to have something to talk about.

However, you sampled the delights of MB last year, and it's right that you should rough it on HA this year just for the (poorer) experience.

HE is 74 and comes for the crack and the beer.
You can blame Brian of the Liverpool boys for me, He lives very close to me, and has helped me achieve a dream from a wee boy, and being able  come to LM(now in mid 40's)and hope to keep coming. So lets have a laugh this year as I could do with one.

See youall there,

Age brings advantages, you know how much partying to do, when to listen and not engage gobb, when its time to have a sleep, when you've had too much sun, when to start drinking water, when women are taking the p**s and just want a free drink, ride, entrance, bed for the night you know what I mean, and the list goes on.  Youth is about getting this knowledge. ;D

No GA passes required for HA.

However, a letter signed in triplicate from the cultural attache to the Court of King Caratacus comes in handy.
Also, please be aware that there is a strict dress code on HA, lounge suits by day and we ALWAYS dress for dinner.  Check at the gate for 'rig of the day'.  If the weather is above 25C, tropical uniform is the order of the day.

Houx Annexe ....... you know it makes sense.

Mike, in an  attempt to help keep the already high standards at HA may I invite you to share a sundowner on our veranda?

Dress is optional, some of our younger elements regrettably no longer dress for dinner whilst in HA, but of course the general genteel ambience is maintained.

Horsehair flywhisk is almost de rigeur of course, but sadly one is likely to have the pith taken out of the helmet...

Usually very little ice left for G&T, we mostly use it to keep the beer and pool cool!

Bill & Mike

It really does make good reading this expression of a time gone past, its almost like a Monty Python sketch or something out of Only Fools and Horses.

My Dad always told me G & T was a tarts drink, anyway that's what a tart told him during the war when his ship was in for refit during the war in New York ;D

Love to see you guys in black tie and a pith helmet, good mixture of day and evening attire, but never mind, the yobs on HA wouldn't spot the gaff.  Bit like afternoon snacks with a tarts drink I guess. ;D

Keep it up its a good wheeze, will be round with the nurse for  snifters if that's okay.  I'll see if the batman can sponge and press my tails for friday night.

"press my tails for friday night."

 :o

I'd been wondering about FS for a while, now we have it!

Are you "Der gabelschwanze teufel"? Mr Mephistopheles himself...

Wow, honoured to meet you sire, come around whenever, always welcome. But no wonder he has been sowing mischief, ha ha, caught you sire.

  ;)

But please, no helmet for evening wear.
We'd only take the pith.

As for tarts and G&T they are welcome too, but must bring their own G&T as we maintain a Wine and Ale bar generally, Kronenenbourg Lager a recent hot tip!(warm-ish anyway!)

Nurses always welcomed, must make room for the caring services don't you know? Dammit, bring the batman too we can provide a small libation for him too, below stairs with the staff.

Bill, I'm honoured, the P-38 is one of my all time favourite aircraft, how did you guess.  Always make a low pass over HA when visiting the EA Snake detachment in the squadron hack and will make sure Nurse FS is aboard.

Maybe a humanitarian drop should be scheduled for fresh ice, see what I can scrap off the leading edge.

All the best FS

Hmm, as long as it isn't scraped off the "pee tube drain"

 ;D

Always knew you were my sort of chap, but prefer the RR Avon powered Lightning to the old P38.

Just thinking this evening whilst walking the dog in Sutton Park, the old Avon was really the turbojet that defined the sixties wasn't it?
Almost everything in the air over Britain seems to have been powered by one version or t'other, if it didn't have propellers.

Hearing that Hunter at Kemble last autumn spooling up for takeoff, had to be an Avon even before I saw which airframe it was in. Lovely...

Anyway, you know where to find us when you deign to pay the Cobras a visit, see you there!

The insurance companies were a bit kinder in those days, my first car was a Morris 1100 in 1974 (£40 FULLY comp), so looked at things like Avenger Tigers, 2.3 litre Vauxhall's, Mexico's etc and drooled.

Probably the same loophole we used, where you could be insured as the main driver on someone else's insurance. The only fear was if you had a prang, your Dad lost his NCB. :o
Can't do that these days unfortunatly, I think the thought of facing my Dad if I had a crash made me more careful the first year after I passed my test.

I know we were talking about cars, and my pal used to race round in his dads commer van, because he would not buy him a car. We used to hide in the back and sneek into Oulton Park, to watch Jerry Marshall and Gordon Spicer. Jerry in a dolly mint and gordon driving a capri. I alao remember when the British Rally was a rally not a trip in Wales, and they went around Oulton the wrong way, on there way to the Lakes.
