Me and Chef went last year.
Managed to get the Dover Calasi ferry for free...
Then stayed in Malmedy, 5 minutes drive away and a reallly lovely place to saty. We were lucky enough to enjoy a drink or 2 with one of the Porsche teams.
Spa was only 2 hours drive from Calais and only one speed camera, which was on race day when we left.
I dont think i'll be there this year as Moto GP clashes.
-
I can't decide whether I'm going or not - it'd be the first foreign race of the year and I really want to go but holiday days are looking a bit thin on the ground what with two Le Mans trips and the Spa 24.
I know if I don't plan to go I'll be sooooo unhappy as the OH is going whatever!!! >:(

Robbo
Were you in your Pagani Zonda to do Spa in 2 hours from Calais...its 211 miles!!

No, my diesel MG. Pretty sure it was 2 hours, although that was to a Diesel pump just short of calais. I wasnt stop watching the time, but it was fairly close. I was racing a TVR ( who wasnt really trying ) but their roads are good and no traff pol.
-
I bet you aren't far wrong, I did Calais to Frankfurt a few times last year.
www.mappy.com says it 373 miles, I didn't start really booting it hard until I reached Germany but twice I managed about 4h 30m from port to hotel. (Cruised at 135+ mph and occassionally reached 145+ on der autobahns).
However once coming back my average was marred by a multi car collision about 20 cars ahead - resulting in 2+ hours spent sitting in the sun at the side of the motorway while it was cleared up.

Spa LMES is the season opener for Europe, and DfH will definitely be present!
(and yes, I'll stay off the dodgy sausages this time!)
We'll probably stay in the same youth hostell again.
-
We have agreed that after last year's weather we'll have a hotel room rather than camp ;D
It was wet enough camping for the 24 let alone camping for LMES (this will of course guarantee beautiful sunshine!)
-

Can you email me the details of that accommodation, just in case I'm allowed out? :) Last year I stayed in Liege which was a bit of a trek, especially in that fog...

Hi Smokie,
Just surf to www.laj.be There you will find all the info you need. Plus, if you go, you get to spend the evenings with us!!

Shouldn't we warn the Belgians?
When my brother went, all he could find was hotels that rented rooms by the hour. Are you sure this is a youth hostel?
-
Thanks Knetter.
"Malmedy is just the place for you. The youth hostel is located in the exceptional Hautes Fagnes region".
It's a Youth Hostel!!
Are the youths supplied or do I have to bring my own? :) :P :)
-
That place last year was really good value.
I found the drunks on my arrival a touch "Dutch" though.
Pub next door was ace.
-
Thanks Knetter.

So we need to drink snakebites with a Pernod and blackcurrant chaser and then throw up outside the door? ;D
Is someone doinga block booking for accomodation? I'm planning on breaking my LMES duck at Spa. Not sure who else might be joining me yet though.

I'll make sure there will be an extra space booked in that hostel, no worries. (http://dfh.vandijkonline.net/images/smiles/icon_thumbsup.gif)

Asked the co- driver.
He thought it was nearer 3 hours, from joining the mtotorway to getting to the petrol station.
-
So the bar next to the hostel will never be the same again after our visit I guess. ;D Will be great to see some off you again in Spa.
-
Oh yes, Spa here too.

Thanks Paddy. Hoping that at least gazza should be there as well!
-
Let us know how many beds/ rooms you would need. I guess I am doing the booking again for us, so a few extra will not matter much. We have to act sooner rather than later though, just to make sure they are not fully booked yet.

Not sure if they will let you in again Paddy after last years puke and sh*t festival on the toillet ;D
Better bring your campervan, just in case :-X

yeah yeah, bring it up and rub it in ::)
nearly everybody knows by now that was the dodgy sausage, not the booze that kept me occupied overnight :-\

Don't worry mate, we'll remind you of it for years to come!!

Judging by the response this looks like a good warm up for the 24hrs.
So I've booked my flights.
The youth hostel also looks a good (soft) alternative to the tent.
How close is it to the circuit?
But do you need to be a member ?

About 5 miles by road in distacne to the car park.
You need to join the belgian youth hostel assiocation for the year at a small cost of £2 or £3 i think.
Just remeber some bedding, as the rubberised matress isnt that comfy.

.... but prevents embarrassing and costly staining in the event of any leakage of bodily fluids ::)

It's a fair 15 minute drive, but plenty of us around to give you a lift :)

You've got a very good point there, Robbo!

I'm not worried, even gave that smilie the name :)
-
Me and Chef went last year.
I think we saw you in the car park didn't we? :)
We have a group of 8 again this year, this year we're staying in Spa rather than Liege and leaving on Monday rather than Sunday.
Last year we walked the track and the drive home was interesting, especially when through tiredness, I could see three foot long white rabbits dancing in front of my car.
-
Yeah, that was us.
I think the Motot GP in France is the same weekend, so i'm off there this time.
I remember it being very foggy all the way back.
-
We just booked our hotel in Liege ;D
6 of us this year, fingers crossed it is less wet than last year :)
-
It'll surely be better than last year. It wasn't the brightest idea to place the Spa 1000 KMs into April, clever mind that was planning that... However, May is another chapter in the Ardennes and I have often found years with splendid sunshine and fair temperatures in May. There's the season opener of the Belcar series (Belgian GT) at Spa this weekend. I might have a drive and look.
BTW, they seem to have the same weather in Instabul this weekend as at Spa last year during the 1000k weekend. It was chilly this week at Istanbul as some early arriver from Rollcentre said and it will be raining this weekend. This is what weather.com told me. I think I stay here over the weekend.
-
OK, now that we've got an idea of who's going, why don't we plan a meeting with all of us together? Any ideas?
-
Sounds like a good idea.
-
Any ideas?
Last year's idea was to meet up at the little bar on top of Eau Rouge on Saturday 4 PM.
Nobody came though :-\
-
We usually frequent the bar in the paddock (fairly frequently!) ;D

.
We were there. We were also very cold
-
We should meet before or after the race because everyone seems to have different plans during the race. Personally, I prefer a meeting before the race. 'Before' could also mean saturday evening depending on outside temperatures. I would suggest the 'village' at the bottom of Eau Rouge where the telefone cells are. This way we have access to drinks AND food. The bar at Raidillon servers only drinks. As suggested by Piglet, the bar in the paddock is also an option. The more I think about it, this might even be a better place to meet.
-
OK, the paddock bar then? Around tea time?
-
That sounds like a good idea.

I'd rather eat my own sandwich this time :-X

Satrudaynight we will be spending in the bar next to he hostel where we are staying I guess?
-
The bar next to the hostel sounds good, (making it very difficult to get lost on the way back to bed).

Frequent? I thought we lived there?
Looking forward to Spa, should be a good start to the season.
