It has always been mystery to me where my ancestors might have come from.Even my dear sweet Grandma who died at the age of 96 could not tell me.It has always made me wonder if I am German,British etc..I am wondering
if anyone is fimiliar with my Sir name [Prewett] and might recognize it as being whatever.I getting tired of saying I am an American Mutt.I am a VERY proud to be an American but would like to know more.I think I might be Swedish.because I do have a thing for Swedish women. ??? ??? :-\

Randy, your name is very Welsh, you should be proud.

http://travelwales.org/

The Welsh are famous for singing, coal mining, growing leeks, dragons, playing rugby, speaking an inpenetrable language. (Note I have ignored any reference to sheep). And not forgetting going into Cardiff city centre on a friday night, getting full-on drunk, beating up each other and fighting with the cops. Their penchant for mindless violence is in stark contract to their soft and lilting valleys accent. Having said that, Wales can be a stunningly beautiful place, although it always seems to rain when I go there. Have produced some fantastic rally drivers too.

Tom Jones came from Wales. Find another nationality to be. :)

Randy, you certainly look like a shorter fatter Tom Jones. And similar also to many Welsh rugby players, here's an example:

I am feeling very Welsh and very PROUD!This would explain a few things like
my fondness for small pubs/bars rather than large glitzy clubs and I love fish
and chips. This also would explain my love for sayin[back off buddy, before I
open up a can of whip arse].As for as my resemblence to Tom Jones the only thing we have in common is the fact women cant help but to cotinually pelt us
with panties. You know being a male underwear super model there things can happen. Please clarify a few things for me please. If I am Welsh does that make me British? Is Wales its own counrty?

Oh yeah,I do look much more manly than the anaimated rugby player. ;D

Great Britain is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. So yes, you can be Welsh AND British.

Wales is mostly governed from Westminster but has recently gained it's own elected Assembly (in Cardiff I think) to manage more of it's own affairs.

Wales does have it's own language (Welsh!) but although most signs in public places are in both Welsh and English, English is by far the predominant language (until you get deep into the valleys where maybe a few old timers still use it daily).

I had grandparents that lived in North Wales, on the coast. I have a few vivid memories of some parts from when I was a kid - especially Snowdonia and Betws-y-coed, both very beautifula reas. More recently I've been on weekends away to Cardiff & Swansea and concur with the earlier post about fighting and binge drinking - but where in the UK doesn't that happen these days?

Yakky Dah. I'm sure a Welshman will come along and correct the spelling, but that's phonetically the way you say Hello or Goodbye or something...about the limit of my Welsh!

According to the book i'm reading 'The Keys to Avalon' about King Arthur. Not only was he Welsh but he led the Britons which was the early name for the Welsh. The Angles and the Saxons coming from England.

They also have a village called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-Llantysilio-gogogoch on the island of Anglesey. I kid you not. It's the longest place name in Britain. (If you want to pronounce it, phonetically, it goes something like: Thlan-fair-pwill-gwin-gill-gogery-churn-drobwith-thlanty-sillyo-gok-gok-gok.)

It is now many years since theu closed down the railway there, but when a train stopped at the station the porter would cry out "Anybody in there for here?"

Translated, Llanfair PG means "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio near the red cave". Bit of a mouthful either way then.

Interestingly, "
The name was contrived in the  1860s by the village council, specifically for the privilege and prestige of having "the longest name of a railway station in  Great Britain". It could not be considered an authentic word in  Welsh.

A reasonable attempt at a pronunciation would be Clan vire pulth gwinn gith gor gerrick win drob uth clan tay see lee oh go go gogch. (The "gch" in the final syllable is the "glottal h" sound, similar to the sound used in the  Yiddish "l'chaim". Saying gok glottally produces more or less the same effect.) Two lls can be pronounced either as 'cl' or 'l', or more precisely as an 'l', while passing air around the tongue (try blowing while saying "l")."

My mum could say it - but then she was a bit Welsh.

The official web site is here http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/
and is the longest domain name on the internet (so they say).

Here's some crappy pics and info re the station from the official web site. http://tinyurl.com/cmz8u
