Title: Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: smokie on June 10, 2005, 09:13:44 am Just in case anyone was planning to buy "duty free" on their Speedferries crossing, their duty free shop is closed "for refurbishment" (and has been for months).
There is no opportunity to get "duty free" at the port either, on either side. Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Chris (Liverpool Boys) on June 10, 2005, 09:18:44 am No cheap fags then smokie :o :o :o :o

Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Snoring Rhino on June 10, 2005, 10:52:32 am The concept of duty free is a fallacy now unless you’re going out of the EU.
Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Brian(Liverpool boys) on June 10, 2005, 10:56:15 am Still cheaper than in the rip off uk.
Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Snoring Rhino on June 10, 2005, 11:30:08 am Yep, but in most cases not as cheap as in French Hypermarkets.
Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: smokie on June 10, 2005, 12:15:28 pm The ferries are bound by their agreements with France to NOT undercut French retail prices.
Fags aren't sold in hypermarkets, although where they are in a shopping centre there is often a Tabac somewhere thereabouts. In my experience, prices for UK cigs are the same across France, including the "Duty Free" shops. A small aside - I worked for P&O Dover for a while (mid 80s). We used to be eligible for staff rates on crossings, and Duty Free. I always understood we got teh DF at cost. It was at a time when a litre of spirit was probably £6 in the DF shop, we got them for £2. That's some markup... We used to have great evenings out, £2 for a non-landing crossing, drink at DF bar prices, come back with a litre of spirit and 200 fags and still have change from £15... it was a weekly event! Now i wish it was that cheap now. Went out last night and i saw no change from £40 and hell i was still pretty sober at the end of it! Its a bugger about the duty free though.... Carrefour it is then! If there is a no smoking sign, the french will still smoke, they love it, they do you know.
Now theres me in France, trying to buy fags, murder i tell you. Petrol stations don't sell fags, stoopid french, its an obvious place to sell fags, the petrol station. Supermarkets don't sell fags, no where sells fags, until you realise that cafes and pubs do, but by that point they are all shut. Sacre bler! Oh yeah, kids, smoking is bad for you. Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: jpchenet on June 10, 2005, 03:42:42 pm Having seen the old "Smoking is gangerous for your health" messages change to "SMOKING KILLS!" over the last few years, I saw a new slant on it down the pub the other day. Someones packet had "SMOKING CAUSES A SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH!" :o
What a marketing department they must have in the Government Health Warnings Department! :-\ Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Brian(Liverpool boys) on June 10, 2005, 04:41:43 pm Petrol stations do sell cigs, but are not allowed to display, so are kept out of site under the counter, ask and you will get some.

Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: Mr. Invincible Mou on June 10, 2005, 09:23:43 pm I have a serious warning for all smokers.
I used to smoke 60 a day, but 18 months ago I decided to quit. I managed to stop overnight :D but since then, I have had the sickest 18 months of my life :P My blood pressure has shot up and I am now on pills :o I have been into hospital for various checks on chest pains and generally felt unwell. I am getting to be really grumpy, and am now a hated reformed smoker who detests the smell of the stuff >:( I have not seen any difference to my bank balance, even though you would have thought that stopping a £100 a week habit would show somewhere ??? And now to cap it all, a Doctor at the hospital has suggested it may be better for me to start smoking again :o because they cannot "find anything wrong". So, all you smokers, forget about giving up. Title: Re:Speedferries no "Duty Free" Post by: smokie on June 11, 2005, 02:14:36 am Good News, thanks Mr I. :)
