Post by: Chris (Liverpool Boys) on April 03, 2005, 02:22:20 pm
I know it's not Le Mans based really but it is in away so bear with me.

I have been given the nod to buy a new console and want to know the concensus of opions regarding which is best PS2 or Mr gate's wonderbox.

I will mainly be playing driving games on it with the odd shoot em up if I can get away with buying a gun to go with it so guys n gals what do you reakon?

I would get a PS2 as the GT4 game that was released less than a month ago has several of the greatest cars/Lemans cars and features the old as well as new circuits. 750 cars and 50 tracks!!! The ring is also included. There are a whole host of older games avaliable at only £20.

Buy a PS2 if i were you!!!

Funny as I was gonna start a Gran Turismo 4 thread last week....

GT4 as Rick says is brilliant, it's got Le Mans circuits pre Mulsanne chicanes & post Mulsanne chicanes, Motegi, Fuji, Monaco & the 'ring (not the film!!) amongst others.
It's got a fair few prototypes from recentish years & plenty of other GT type motors.

But then if you get an Xbox you can chip it & put a big hard drive in it, so I've heard ;) Then you need never actually buy any games (if you've no conscience...)
It's also got a game called Project Gotham Racing which also has plenty of nice fast motors & also has the Nurburgring (although it seems a little different from the GT4 version, I've never been so I don't know which is closer to being "right")  There's a new game due out in the next month or so called Forza Motorsport (or something) which is meant to be similar in style to GT4

That said most people own PS2's so it's easier to swap games & stuff with mates, but both have plenty of choice for games.

I'd go for both :)

Pure and simply.

PS2

Gran Turismo 4 - Absolutely immense. Got it last week and haven't put it down. Racing on the Nurburgring with some of the worlds finest motors is true brilliance.

Other great driving games include the TOCA Race driver series which are  both quality.

Another reason. Pro Evo Soccer 4 - get your mates round and have an absolute cracking night in with a few beers.

The new Metal Gear Solid and Devil May Cry are both also supposed to be brilliant.

I live in a (post grad) student house and we have all the consoles, and by far and away the one that gets the most use is the PS2. The only reason i would buy an x-box is for the Halo games. They were good.

But the straight answer is a PS2, you could even get one of the sexy slim versions.

Alternatively wait till next xmas and the PS3 might be out, but i wouldn't hold your breath.

J

The slim PS2 are harder to Chip!!! (also beware they have an external power supply which I heard can overheat!!!! If you can get the old type then you get a chip from the USA (Illegal in the UK) for about £35

I have chipped three PS2's now so I can BACKUP games and play any region of DVD. They are very hard to fit, I am a qualified electronics technician and I rate it 9/10 for difficulty!

We will have the PS2 with 30 odd games at Le Mans this year so if you are still undecided or get bored when waiting for the ferry ON SUNDAY (we are on the same boat as you Chris!) you can play on it in the van!!

I've found that www.mod-chip.com are excellent for chips and with the magic 3.1 for earlier versions, you buy 2 and get one free. They come UPS within a couple of days. Click on the Union flag for prices in £s. Ricks right about how hard they are to chip. You need Steve Austins bionic eye for starters. I can tell you some horror stories especially with the Version 9 and 10's. I'm slightly more in the Xbox camp for Xbox live, but Grand Turismo has always been the Dogs Bollocks apart from I'm unable yet to back up the new one. Thats why I have both.

Still unsure I must admit fancy an xbox for halo and splinter cell but then again gt4 sounds cool

 ??? ???

Buy both then!!!  ;D

At the end of the day, the consoles are the initial lay out (£100 each???) but it is the games that add up!! (£40 each for the top new games)

So, 1 console, 20 games over time is about £900.

2 consoles and 20 games is £1000. When you put it in those terms there's only a small difference.

As you won't be buying the same game for each one, you can sort of justify it!!  ;)

Title: Re:PS2 or XBOX
Post by: chrisbeatty on April 08, 2005, 12:27:15 pm
Sounds like you oughta buy both to me!! The games tend to look better on Xbox but some prefer the PS2 controllers & there are some PS2 only games like the aforementioned (& great) GT4!!

JPC has a good point, it's the games that cost the major money, so get both & get them chipped then you pay a little more for the systems but almost nothing after that. It all depends on how immoral you can allow yourself to be?? ;)

i have 2 consoles,
a gamecube which i bought a few years ago and have about 20 games for
and a ps2, which i bought very recently for the sole reason being to play gt4 (which as has been mentioned a few times is an excellent game)
the xbox is very good for its online multiplayer games, and genral graphics

I got GT4 a few days ago and the graphics are so much better then GT3. Everything just looks smoother (as your pictures testify Rick). If you are crap at racing games like me and you have played GT3 you can transfer up to 100,000 credits to GT4 which allows you to get a better first car. I would recommend the HPA Motorsports R32. It costs about 30 grand (cheaper than the stock R32) and its got 550 BHP. Doesn't power slide though because the traction control is too good!!

How much for a 41 year old driver in Colchester for fully comprehensive with maximum no claims?

The car actually exists in real life too. They are a company in Canada who do silly things to golfs. Check out the link, there is a video about half way down.

http://hpamotorsports.com/r32.htm

35,000 dollars seems very reasonable to me. That doesn't include the price of the car of course.

Thats it not impressed Argos didn't bloody have any still WITHOUT play station.

Mate, leave argos out of it!! Go to a proper shop. I blimmin hate argos with it's crappy staff, returns policy & undercutting shops that provide a real service >:(

I'm sure you'll be able to find a more conventional retailer who charge about the same,  & will have consoles in stock. When I got my PStwo recently the staff recommended I got a 3 in 1 accessory bundle instead of buying the controller & mem card separately. I got it cheaper than buying them individually & got a free dvd remote, so now I can switch my PStwo on & off without moving off my lazy ass!!  ;)

Also be sure to turn down (if not off) the traction control & the other settings for under/oversteer in game for more control & wheel spinning frolics!! ;D

Unfortunatley part of the reason the boss has given permission to get the ps2 is due to me having a sh*t load of argos vouchers so am pretty much snookered.

Also they are offering ps2 with 2 games extra controller steering wheel and pedals dvd remote and mem card for £130 which is not bad.

However THEY DONT HAVE ANY, so i canconvince her she wants something from argos i will be then free to shop anywhere, but atthisrate I think I will be playing on ricks ps2 at portsmouth first

"Also they are offering ps2 with 2 games extra controller steering wheel and pedals dvd remote and mem card for £130 which is not bad."

I bought David his PS2 for Christmas soon after they came out, as part of a package with steering wheel and pedals, plus GT3.  (Well, I told his mum it was his Christmas present.... ;))

Anyway, we oops he tried the wheel and pedals twice, and they've stayed in the box ever since.  - Just couldn't get on with them.   The wheel had FAR too much self-centering, and the pedals were just  pushed across the floor.

I don't know if anyone else has had any luck using a steering wheel, but short of screwing the clamp to the dining table and bolting the pedals to the floor (yes, that would have at least improved my dinner party conversations, ) and dragging the telly into the dining room whenever we (oops again) he wanted to use it.....

Nah, Chris, don't  bother with the package, get what you need.

By the way, you may have read elsewhere that we can't go to LM this year, so to cheer him (yes him) up, I bought GT4.

His PS2 won't play it.   :'(  Unlike Rick C I'm about as electronically-minded as your average parsnip.  My soldering iron is coal powered.

We've tried blowing the dust out (no, not with an airline!!) and a lens cleaner, to no avail.   Seems the GT4 disc is the latest-generation technology and has so much data on it that it can't be read in one pass of the laser, so it's double layered, like a lot of CD's apparently.   It works on his mate's PS2, which is newer and probably has less dust inside it, but not ours.   David says the game really is fantastic, (I've thought of asking can I go round to his mate's to ask for  ago.............).

I've heard PS3 is coming out Christmas 2006, but we can't wait that long.  So rather than spend a ton on a new PS2, £50 Sony offer a swap for fully refurbished one at £50.

Just thougt I'd pass the story on,in case anyone else has the same problem with an older PS2.

Post by: rcutler on April 14, 2005, 08:42:07 pm
I have heard that GT4 is un-copyable (well at the moment ;D) I hope to crack it in the next few weeks but it starts off at over 5GB so you need a dual layer disk.

Someone said that if you fit a DMS4 chip it will play even the next generation of encrypted disk.

Both me and my brother (tink) are running DMS3 chips so I will give it a try.

Personally I think you should wait till they release the new Playstation 3

There has been a demo version about for quite a while

And Mr. Cutler will be pleased to see, access to the "Mod Chip" is easy

More info here Archive Site (http://www.misinformer.com/archive/2001/01/15/)

Edit.. Site didn't like hot-linking for the pics, so I have put them elsewhere.
