Title: Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on January 29, 2005, 12:09:11 pm Advice please!
We have a really good aluminium flag pole about 10m tall. I saw last year some people on MB are using fishing rods (carp rods?) as extensions to flag poles...seems a good idea. How long can you get them? On ebay the biggest ones I can see are c12ft. Any tips for attaching to flag pole? Or other non fishing rod alternatives... I'm not going to compete with you folks with really "big ones", but need a few more feet! Thanks for anyone that can enlighten. Mr T Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: rcutler on January 29, 2005, 01:02:34 pm I was one of those that used (fishing Rods). They are actually sold as Flag Poles.
I got mine at a motorcaravan show last year. Mark Every got his in Carrefor!! The Carrefor ones are not as good a quality but I think 5 Meter ones were 5 EURO!! 10 Meter 15 Euro! I paid about £30 for my 9 meter pole. They usually come with flag clips at the end are telescopic to a sensible size. I will have a hunt around for a web address of where I got mine. Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: jpchenet on January 29, 2005, 01:25:19 pm As Rick said, I got mine on the way back from Pre Quals last year. Can't remember where though?
They were basically 1 Euro per metre. I got 2 x 6Metre ones, one for each end of the Gazebos. They are quite thin at the top end though so can bend in even slightly high winds. That said, if your current pole is 10 metres (33 feet) it is probably one of the tallest anyway. And if it is a proper flag pole then I guess the old Quality v Quantity arguement could apply! Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on January 29, 2005, 01:38:46 pm Thanks guys - on reflection my existing pole must be 5m...
any web links much appreciated! Of course I'll have to make sure the fairy lights can reach the top as well.... Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on January 29, 2005, 03:10:02 pm No cancel that - just got one from Ebay - £20 for 9m telescopic...that sounds like a useful upgrade
Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: rcutler on January 29, 2005, 08:41:16 pm Well if you are getting extenstions then I will just boast about my 9meter unmodified pole ;D ;D

Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Robbo SPS on January 31, 2005, 07:06:52 pm I had some telescopic poles that snapped in the wind 2 years back.
What are you using ( wording ) to search e-bay for ?? Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: DelBoy on January 31, 2005, 10:17:30 pm I used 'telescopic'. You get loads of fishing rods, but embedded among these are various poles 3m to 9m, from £4 to £20.
Ironically, when I entered 'telescopic poles', I only got fishing rods!!! DB Title: Pls. ignore if sober Post by: hgb on January 31, 2005, 10:42:25 pm Oh Mr Toad, you don't want to top the sole tree at Houx, do you ? Sorry, I'm drunk... Have a good one.

Robbo, I just searched " Poles ", they are fishing whips do not think they will be strong enough to take full sized flag, but will report back when they arrive. What are you using ( wording ) to search e-bay for ?? Ken Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: jpchenet on February 01, 2005, 02:48:59 pm What happens in the case of Lightning strikes?? sorry I go down to Le Mans in a MGB GT every year so always prepare for the worst!! Ken Hmmmmmm. Not sure whether a fibre glass Roach Pole would act as a conductor?? And there are some tall trees around so it won't be the highest point! Although we are due another wet one again soon I guess. Always keep one hand in your pocket ;) Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: jpchenet on February 01, 2005, 05:25:56 pm Always keep one hand in your pocket ;) Is it true then that you are safe if you are touching rubber ??? ::) Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Steve Pyro on February 01, 2005, 05:33:25 pm As long as you're not touching cloth.
Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: DelBoy on February 01, 2005, 05:39:07 pm Try these two ebay shops

- 11h 50m Some still on e bay. Ours arrived this morning great value and will do what we want them for. Would not take a full sized flag as end taper is very thin. Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: jpchenet on February 02, 2005, 11:56:12 am 1 x 5m and 1 x 8m for £6.99 from the same vendor.
Won two sets! Should be collecting them at the weekend on route to relatives. Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on February 04, 2005, 06:34:59 pm Any tips on anchoring them to/in the ground? Also are they telescopic, or are they lengths that connect together?
My 9m pole has gone straight to the Beermountain warehouse, so I won't see it until MB in June! Thanks Mr T Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: jpchenet on February 04, 2005, 07:17:12 pm They are telescopic. We'll be securing ours to the legs of the gazebo.
Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: skorpio on February 04, 2005, 08:38:18 pm What you need is one of those metal poles they use for putting tape etc around things at roadside etc, councils use them a lot, straight "rod" about 1metre long with a loop at the top, (think about it and you'll see what I mean ;) ) now cut the loop off, put a piece of rubber pipe [tight fit] over the top {this protects the inside of the flag pole} and sharpen the point up a bit, there you have the "anchor" hammer it in the ground and slide the flag pole over the top. ;D ;D
Ours has withstood some very high winds like that with no further anchoage required. Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on February 05, 2005, 09:44:20 am Thanks - got it - we carry those things in our stores for the orange fence if the pikeys are closing in. I'll cut the top off one (some sort of industrial welding lance?) and there you have it - the perfect lightining conductor extension!
Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Ron Jeremy on February 05, 2005, 01:55:00 pm if you can, visit a building site preferably civils site and get some lengths of reinforcement bar.

Title: Re:Flag Poles Post by: Mr Toad on February 07, 2005, 06:38:08 pm Good thinking Robbo - I'll see if I can "borrow" a piece from one of the trackside towers - hope I don't take one of the vital supporting bits!

Last year a french bloke between us and the track had a marvellous erection (phnarr phnarr) which he built on Tuesday and didn't return to until the weekend. I'm sure he wouldn't miss some bits... ;) ;) |
