Title: A Must for Sportscar Fans Post by: powermite on January 07, 2005, 01:35:08 pm I bought this DVD after reading the following review on the www.dailysportscar.com website.
Just watched it and its got some brilliant footage and a 60's porn film soundtrack. Go get one! PM Thanks once again to DSC,well worth the subscription. The Gulf/Wyer GT40s and 917s in Action “The Gulf/Wyer GT40s and 917s In Action” is actually a compilation of two films: “Never Start Something You Can’t Stop” is a 30 minute feature made by Ferodo, as a promotional vehicle for brake linings no less. This is a fabulously dated piece with some quite magnificent footage from the 1968 Le Mans 24 Hours, including an unmissable GT40 in-car lap of the Armco-free Le Mans circuit, complete with commentary by Stirling Moss. The second film – “A Year To Remember” - covers John Wyer’s 1970 season in charge of the mighty Porsche 917s, with Pedro Rodriguez / Lei Kinnunen and Jo Siffert / Brian Redman aboard. This 35 minute film again includes some wonderfully evocative footage including some charming period interviews with Wyer, Siffert and Rodriguez, none of whom, very sadly, are with us today. The film chronicles a dominant season by the team, with epic races at equally epic circuits: Daytona, Sebring, Brands Hatch (a legendary race from Rodriguez, which the Ed. still talks about), Monza, the Targa Florio (with the Porsche 908-3s), Spa, Le Mans, Watkins Glen and finally the Osterreichring – Now THAT was a season! The Gulf/Wyer compilation is available on VHS video and now on DVD too, from Terrific Stuff Videos – I cannot recommend this highly enough. You can get a copy of your very own from www.terrificstuff.co.uk/ Go on, tell the missus to take the Christmas jumper back to Marks and Spencers and buy this for you instead! I've seen the film "A Year to Remember" and yes, you hit it right on the screws, absolutely brilliant film. It's worth it for the footage of Pedro at Brands Hatch alone. Another film worth its weight in gold is "The Speed Merchants" it follows the Ferrari and Alfa teams through the 1972 season with narration by Brian Redman, Vic Elford & Mario Andretti with interview footage of guys like Jacky Ickx, Ronnie Peterson, Helmut Marko, etc. Some brillaint footage, some of it very sad (Jo Bonnier's fatal accident at LeMans) and some quite funny (The Alfa's trying to get through tech inspection at Sebring and Brian Redman playing with his kids). Title: Re:A Must for Sportscar Fans Post by: Pilgrim on January 07, 2005, 03:54:51 pm 'La Ronde Infernale' is a top-notch piece of footage, and well worth getting hold of if you can.
I'd like to see the other films mentioned on the thread as well. Title: Re:A Must for Sportscar Fans Post by: Black Granny on January 07, 2005, 05:00:27 pm Found a VHS of 'La Ronde Infernale' copy in a charity shop for about £1. Apart from a short wonky bit it plays fine. Good footage of the older Porsches.
Title: Re:A Must for Sportscar Fans Post by: Nordic on January 07, 2005, 05:51:32 pm 'La Ronde Infernale' is very good, pretty hard viewing the pall of smoke from John Woolfe's 917 and the tragic end he meet in it. Got mine free with Motorsport a few years back
The Speed Merchants is the other must have. I read somewhere, Atlas maybe, that there was loads footage not used that could be made into a longer version. |
