Title: The Farewell Thread Post by: BigH on June 05, 2004, 09:41:46 pm Blimey, it's getting all exciting...
I'm nearly done now, and hope you guys are getting there too, I've even given the car a polish. In a direct contradiction to BMW's research, the Jaguar handbook of 1958 says that final buffing is best done with the pubic hairs of a virgin, and I must say it's scrubbed up rather well. The spec is a bit vague when it gets around to the virgin bit though. I mean, I'm sure the old spinstery woman who checks my books out at the village library is a virgin, but there's no way I'm going down there with a pair of shears, even with Saveloys library card. Fortunately, cleaning the chrome work is a little more straightforward. I can't wait to sneak my b*llocks out of my shorts and rest them on the leather squabs (tip: if you ever do this, and you should, don't do it if the car's been parked in the sun for an hour or two, all hell breaks loose and quite frankly the explanations at Casualty cut no mustard) The chilli is prepared and in the freezer, all 20 litres of it. I heard from Kate Knockers on the local travel bullettin that the mushroom cloud where my kitchen used to be is visible from Berkshire. My piles have been behaving themselves pretty well recently, and although they could be trying the old 'false sense of security' trick, I'm confident that only a litre of my Preparation H, Anusol, morphine and Red Bonnet Pepper cocktail will suffice. Anyway, if I've any left over, I can put it in the chilli. Ooooh, I can't wait. Brian, Ian, Chris, and anyone else leaving soon, have a good journey. Victim of "fizzy gravy" too eh? :o Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: BigH on June 06, 2004, 04:20:04 pm Whilst packing, my thoughts again turned to virgins:
Don't pack anything half decent, put all the gear you were going to take down to the charity shop in your travel bag. I recall one year thinking: I'm grown up now, I have a sense of pride in my appearance, and maybe the sartorial humiliation of a set of grubby t-shirts and soiled shorts is something I can put behind me, and call the case closed. So I packed some natty and expensive shirts, designer shorts and some Man About Town Tropical Wear. Complete with designer sunglasses, some lovely leather loafers and a rakish hat I had the intention of strolling around lazily and looking like a man who'd arrived. After two days I looked like a cross between Catweazel and Worzal Gummidge after experimenting with gorillas, strong cider and a threshing machine. It was not a pretty sight. In my stupor, I still thought I looked pretty good however, and was flattered to catch the attention of a couple of ladies near the station. It was pointed out later that one looked remarkably like Iggy Pop, and her mate was uglier than a lynch mob. In summary, you're going to look pretty rough by Sunday, so you might as well start off that way. A night in a ditch is a great leveller. Harper dudes! - when are you flying? H Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: Matt Harper on June 06, 2004, 05:29:33 pm Hello H
Cant't decide how I fel about your segue from spending a night in a ditch to enquiring of our journey plan. I wonder what prompted the question? It has to be said that preparation for the race weekend's festivities is comprehensively accomplished by lying in a ditch, covered in ones own vomit and piss. I speak from personal experience. I 'had a bad pint' in the Stella bar in 1983 and in time honoured Captain Oates fashion, I announced that I was going outside and may be some time. I was rescued and dragged to the tribunes by my stalwart oppo Ricardo, ensuring that I got to witness the 110 car start and the rest is history. Dave and I are meeting at the Delta Business Elite Lounge (my first Le Mans was by Volvoverland Coach Tours, so there's progress) at Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky International, on Wednesday afternoon. We intend to make copious use of the 'gin button' on the Air France Overnighter to Charles De Gaulle, assuming the rest of it hasn't fallen over, in the meantime. It will be interesting to see who draws the short straw and gets to drive the renter, once we've been poured off the plane. Pussies that we are, we are spending Thurday night at Mater and Pater's gaff near Saumur - though this in itself requires a tough constitution, as it was Mummy and Daddy that taught us how to drink like bastards in the first place. We collect our motorhome on Friday morning, get the shopping over and done with and hopefully rendez-vous with our UK based contingent on Houx at around mid-day Friday. I'm very much looking forward to meeting the faces behind some of the most entertaining and downright bizarre word-craft imaginable, all provided through this forum. Hopefully our paths will cross - and we'll invite you to chance your arm (and colon) in the lucky-dip. See you then. When are you heading out? Matt Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: powermite on June 06, 2004, 06:36:18 pm Stu,
why oh why have you left it till now to say you suffer from IBS.Im a bloody expert mate.We should really have an IBS thread, or should that be spurt, to ourselves. PM Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: BigH on June 06, 2004, 06:57:17 pm Wasn't IBS the Tory bloke who took over from the little baldy Yorkshireman?
Hi Matt, I'm crossing with a mate on the 3:15 Portsmouth/Cherbourg on Tuesday 'artnoon. As no-one else seems to be making that crossing, we'll be the easy to spot 'Billy-no-mates' duo in the corner. Two cars, no co-pilots, so the sooner we can get down the better. Gin is a good loosener to start the weekend, I hope they don't run out on you. I reckon you could survive for weeks, if not months and years on gin and tonic and dry roasted peanuts. I'm a little apprehensive about the welcome cocktail Savaloy and the Liverpool boys have planned for my arrival. The problem is, I'll be sober. Have a good flight boys, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for R2D2... H Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: Stu on June 06, 2004, 07:10:02 pm Stu, It only plays up once a year around this time. Less than 5 hours to go. Car packed, just need to wash some honda pants (fast underpants for the un-initiated), beef dinner and I'm off.why oh why have you left it till now to say you suffer from IBS.Im a bloody expert mate.We should really have an IBS thread, or should that be spurt, to ourselves. PM Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: BigH on June 06, 2004, 09:40:40 pm Just re-read your post Matt. I wasn't insinuating that you'd be at home in a ditch, although they can be welcoming places on a balmy evening. It's just that something in my system has just kicked in, and I'm seeing everything with an LM week bias.
I've just walked down the highstreet with a pizza, in a 'stepping over guy-ropes' fashion. Several heavily laden flying crows passed me. Savaloy has just rang up from Maison Blanche, and the picture I have of the campsite in my minds eye owes more to Hieronymus Bosch than the ACO. I need a drink to steady my nerves, and maybe another viewing of Hannibal. I'm afraid I may have mis-timed my training, I don't want to peak too early... H Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: mgmark on June 06, 2004, 10:05:26 pm Quote maybe the sartorial humiliation of a set of grubby t-shirts and soiled shorts is something I can put behind me, and call the case closed......... In summary, you're going to look pretty rough by Sunday, so you might as well start off that way. H - So I take it that grubby T-shirts and soiled shorts remains the dress order of the week then? Don't forget to pack the Imodium - prevents soiled shorts before they need Persil or the bin ;D Mark Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: Stu on June 06, 2004, 10:42:15 pm Right everyone, I'm off in 1hour and 20 mins. I hope everyone has a safe and police free journey down and hope to meet loads of you all there in the coming week.

I wasn't insinuating that you'd be at home in a ditch, although they can be welcoming places on a balmy evening. Fear not, that was not how I interpreted your message - even though your non-insinuation might be quite appropriate. We will be dragging 2 x R2D2 so will be a fairly easy target. I do worry sometimes that I'm in danger of being blind-sided by fellow forum contributors who I've pissed-off over the years, those who I have figuratively felled with my rapier-like wit and crushing vocabulary. Consequently, I shall be traveling incognito and operating covertly, so as to avoid any nastiness in this regard. If someone sidles up to you at the CA Champagne Reception wearing combination round specs, big nose and attached Groucho Marx moustache, that'll be me. [quote Matt - Don't wear that disguise - you would be mistaken for either George Bush or Tony Blair ........ the Gorilla-suit look would be better - and it (possibly ?) wouldn't need so much prior preparation !! ;) ;) Title: Re:The Farewell Thread Post by: Lawnmower Man on June 08, 2004, 12:20:54 pm OK thats me out here.
