 :)  Suggest as many as possible take PMR446 radios, keep tuned to Channel 4, notify all other Brits in range of any speed traps........  Use of the radios is legal in France!

That my friend , is a MAAAARVELOUS idea.....

I guess the success depends on the number of people with the radios availible.......

Is there a central channel for the campsites as well??

PMR446 radios (446Mhz) are available from any electrical store (eg Dixons) and even Homebase. They're just little two-way radios - usually made by the likes of Binatone or Motorola and sell for about £30-£40 per pair.
But they are ALOT cheaper on the continent (20Euros).

i'll add to them shopping list when i go to carrefour in calais for supplies.

At the risk of being labelled a major kiljoy, can I remind everyone to respect our French hosts and keep their con-brio motoring to the derestricted roads and obey village and town speed limits.

We get a fantastic welcome in France and it would be nice to keep it that way.

some of us will anyway as i'll have a "spy in the cab" in the form of a ten year old who will report the slightest deviant behaviour back to HQ and i won't be allowed to go again

Partially because some of us arrive in exotic machinery that the french dont see very often (they dont have MGF's for a start)  - Lighting the rear tyres and generally giving are show is part of the fun if the drive down.....

Agree that the 140mph that my boss does on the autoroute ALL the way to Le-mans is a little excessive though.....

Whats the range of these radios?. Some you buy are as good as 2 paper cups and a piece of string. (Remember those Blue Peter viewers).

good point as some are designed for only short distances such as building sites/ site security.  


It would be a little pointless only communicating with a car going past when you could lower the window a scream your message, by which time you'd have been nicked.

This may be forehead creasingly obvious to the veterans here, but for any young newbies travelling to France for the first time:

The French drivers, god bless em, will warn you of an approaching speed trap. So if you see an oncoming car flash its lights at you, he's not trying to tell you that the some of the bodily fluids from the cadaver in the boot are leaking on to the tarmac, he's telling you that a speed trap is just up ahead. Nice, really.

Have used these type of radio's before - they are very good.

Range from past experiance is upto a mile - depending of terrain - not used them on long distances while in cars though.

I use a system when Im Karting that helps me keepin touch with my dad trackside, who in turn helps by telling me that my engine is going to explode - it can be annoying when he's in my ear saying "you spun - ijit boy"

Its ok though - cos he can say that all he wants - he knows that he has to push me to get me going again ;D

And where do they buy the radar that allows them to overtake safely round bends?
