Title: Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: powermite on May 23, 2004, 10:22:41 am Living near Newport, all the Cup Final traffic passes through on the way to Cardiff.Well yesterday I had to go towards Cardiff on the M4.The junction i got off at was about 8 miles from the City and this was one of the junctions that the Man U fans were directed to.And what was waiting down the road...not one but two camera vans within half a mile of each other. This is the police force who last year and the year before set up cameras to catch the World Rally Cars as they travelled to Cardiff for the start and finish of the Rally GB.They even banned Freddie Loix and tried to arrest him this year when he returned. The rally brings about £5 million into Cardiff but our friendly plod were more interested in getting their few hundred quid speeding fines.
It was touch and go this year that the rally would return. Cant believe the mentality of the South Wales Plod!!! They ought to have arrested the Millwall team for that pathetic display yesterday though. PM Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: Lawnmower Man on May 23, 2004, 11:12:57 am I find it difficult to express my feeling on this sort of thing. All these speed cameras are IMHO alianating the law abiding public.
If they don't want people that are likely to be in high spirits going fast then put up big signs to say "If you speed past this point you WILL be caught we have mobile cameras in operation on this road." If the money they make from the event is not enough then set up a toll and charge everyone even those walking. Whilst I can't actualy advocate speeding I think some sort of common sense needs to be applied. I used to live near a long norrow bridge. You could see the bridge had no pedestrians, You knew nothing would pull out (Kayaks don't fly) and it was too easy to speed. Plod used to be there on lots of occasions. Yet you would never see him in the town when the boy racers were playing silly b*gg*ers in the high street. Trivia Question. How many Speed cameras are there on the most dangerous strech of road in England? (No Prizes :-) Can someone tell me how they manage to catch the guy that nicked the Maxine Carr papers from a car. When normaly the best you get is an incident number so you can claim on your insurance? t. Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: smokie on May 23, 2004, 11:41:44 am I see from this morning's paper that Wales' Mr Brunstrom is proposing an impairometer, to do roadside tests for drinks, drugs and simply being too old to be driving.
And...the weirdest thing...on Friday I was pondering with my mate about what the bird that does my satnav looks like and there in today's paper is an article on her!!! Spooky or what? Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: wishy on May 23, 2004, 11:48:31 am There is a sure fired way of slowing performance cars down in Wales.....especially in the Cardiff area.
You get the local car theives to remove all spoilers from the back of Prodrive Subaru Imprezza's. In doing so it makes the cars unstable at speed........ask Pretzel he was the local guinea pig!!!!!!! Wishy Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: pretzel on May 23, 2004, 07:50:45 pm I find it difficult to express my feeling on this sort of thing. All these speed cameras are IMHO alianating the law abiding public. Me too. As a fellow resident of South Wales I can only agree with everything that PM has said regarding our so called 'finest'. Other than on major sporting ocasions which they see purely as an opportunity to fill their coffers with even more speeding fines, they seem to have nothing else on their minds other than to sit around on perfectly safe A roads, normally at times when they are lightly trafficked, waiting for unsuspecting motorists doing 15mph over the limit. Yes you guessed it - I was recently nabbed by one of them hiding behind a hedge, 6:45am on an A road between Cardiff and Newport with no other traffic to be seen for miles.... I have nothing against policing of bad driving or the use of excessive speed in patently dangerous areas, in fact I wholeheartedly welcome it, but you NEVER see them doing this. And if you happen to be a victim of real crime - like the vandalism to my car that Wishy refers to then don't expect much effort on their part. They're all too busy out in their so called 'Safety Camera' vans. I'm not bitter - honest..... BTW the Scoob is stable at any speed, regardless of spoiler - it's the driver that's unstable ;) Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: gibberish on May 24, 2004, 09:37:58 am Heartfelt commiserations Pretzel. sounds like it's time for a petition to the South Wales constabulary. Shame I live miles away. ;)

Shame I live miles away. ;) My favourite bug bear. Its about time the British Public said its ENOUGH, and did something about these Camera / Scamera's. we helped to vote in the nob'eads, so klets have our say. Camera's and a scam. I can tell you that i havent benefitted proffesionaly from the camera's and Hampshire were the 4th in the list for revenue takings IIRC. Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: Stu on May 24, 2004, 11:38:32 am There's been a few cameras up here which have had the burning tyre treatment. Seems to fettle them for a while. THe oes around where I work don't have cameras in very often as I always test them in the works truck. We even now get sent them at work and unless we are on an emergency, we get the fine as well. Trouble is that its easy money. Like to know how many asylum seekers cough up whilst driving around in cars with no insurance and no licence (thats until the government puts them through their test for free as there's obviously a shortage of skilled drivers in Britain). Oooops, off I go again.
Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: rcutler on May 24, 2004, 12:24:30 pm I might have been caught on saturday morning in the roadworks north of Newbury. It is a 40 mph limit and I didn't slow down early enough. I saw a flash but only one. If it did go I am afraid that I will lose my license but fortunately AFTER LE MANS. 85mph in a 40 zone OH SH!T.

Rick, and thats WHY we have cameras, 40 mph limits arent the place to do it. Sorry. You were selling the carrea anyway , wern't you ? Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Shame I live miles away. ;) Organising a petition I suspect could lead to all sorts of trouble. Suddenly you'd find yourself being 'questioned' for no particular reason - maybe for just walking through town in a loud shirt or something. Not a risk I am prepared to take... Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: BigH on May 24, 2004, 09:02:51 pm Quote Rick, and thats WHY we have cameras, 40 mph limits arent the place to do it. Sorry. Robbos reformed! All that time inside has worked! Actually, I have to admit to nudging what must have been 12,000 mph on the on-ramp to the M3 the other day. That's just a guess, but by the time I reached J1 I was back in the early palaeozoic era (which was a worry, as my tax disc only went as far as Pre-Cambrian) chasing a white Nissan 300ZX. I suppose Einstein warned us about this, but I wasn't expecting my right foot to age 800 years more than my left, it looks like it's been stuck in Swiss glacier since the last global winter, and there's a mixture of seeds and dried berries in my Y-fronts which dates my bollocks back to the iron age, on some African plain. My penis is now called Lucy. Also, my nasal hairs are about four foot long (it normally takes at least a fortnights growth to get that far) and not even the uncut version of Pink Flamingoes will make the hair on the back of my neck stand up now. They don't make those Morris Minors like they used to. H Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: Lord Steve on May 24, 2004, 11:06:00 pm Smokie
Set your satnav to the Italian bird - she gives me the bloody horn when I'm trying to negotiate complex intersections! Steve Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Tough luck mate, let's hope the penanlty wont be too severe. Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun? Post by: Black Widow on May 25, 2004, 08:22:41 pm For those in the Sussex/Hants/Dorset area, the local TV news has shown tonight a new Speed Camera the Dorset Police will use. It's the Pro Laser III, a high resolution camera with laser rangefinder. It can apparently catch you speeding from about a mile away!! >:(
On a lighter note, here's on of Dorsets finest testing the high speed pursuit vehicle at Prescott Hillclimb!! (The driver really is a Traffic Cop, too!!) :o [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re:Speeding in Wales innit mun?
