Title: Greasey spoon required
Post by: Brian(Liverpool boys) on May 18, 2004, 03:14:51 pm
We are leaving Liverpool on Saturday night 5/6/04 to drive down to Pompey for the ferry, does anyone know if there is a place en route to get breakfast apart from the motorway rip off dives, truck stop or any other place that may be open in the early hours.
cue, Mr,Cutler.

There is a greasy joe cafe in Cirencester that is open 24 hours a day and I have eaten there many a time. It is just off the A419 near the tesco superstore. It is a truck stop so the food is cheap and greasy.

What route do you take from Liverpool as there may be a few more options but that is the only one that springs to mind.

IanB, not much along that route except a few layby places. Avoid the useless Little Chef about 30 miles south of Newbury, absolute trash and that is only the prat of a manager... Filthy bogs and no interest in serving customers. Trukstops in Laybys are usually quick and cleanish, if a bit greasy, you never see truck drivers dead at th wheel in laybys after breakfast do you? Do you??? ;)

There will be .....

NOTHING open in and around POrtsmouth, that early ( your on the AM boat ).

I know its little help, but the food on the P&O boats has really improved. Its more expensive but the CARVERY breaksfast is excellent for a little under £9 ( ouch ).

If you arrive in the wee small hours, there are HUNDREDS of places.

i'm on the tiles saturday night, if i'm awakew when GAb parks up, i'll see if i'm able to do Bacon and Eggs. ( but thats very slim )

As I am a racing cyclist that compete 24hours a day on many races I have put up a post on our other forum about Cafe's. Obviously we know where most cafe's in britain are and the response was similar to mine earlier.

There are no real places other than the motorway services that do anything.
There is a motorway services on the M40 near silverstone that i believe is 24 hour, then there is chievely (3 miles north of Newbury) that I think has reduced services at night and then there is the service station at Sutton Scotney but I am sure all you get here is a petrol station.

Would cook you breakfast but you are coming through way tooo early for me to be getting up!!

So there you have it! Proof that if Basingstoke qualified for Europe they wouldn't have been allowed as they haven't wasted millions on a European Standard Stadium!!  <RADFC>  :-X

Basingstoke Town FC don't do anything very well!!

They only managed to get into the new Southern Conference as Hendon dropped out. Basingstoke had come 14th in the Ryman Premiership and lost their playoff against a team from Ryman 1st Division only to get a reprieve anyone a few days later!!

On the Brekkie front, what tme is your boat?? And what time would you plan on getting to Newbury/Winchester?

It was the mention of European fixture lists that did it.

Anyway, make a few breakfast butties up before you go. Wrap them in foil then stuff them around the engine of your truck. Fill the flask and when you arrive at the docks,,  Voila  hot sarnies and tea.  We used to heat the pies up in the air intake of the Snow Trac we had when I worked for the Electric board on the over head lines. Worked a treat.
