Title: Travelling down on Sunday before the race? Post by: smokie on May 09, 2004, 10:11:40 am I have been trying unsuccessfully to book a hotel en route for Sun 6th. Preferably somewhere beyond Rouen.
It just dawned on me that 6 June is a date of special significance in Normandy. (60 year anniversary of D Day), and, with the aid of a P&O ferry rather than a landing craft, I will be recreating a little bit of history!! Sightseeing (i.e. straying too far off route) with the caravan in tow is not practical, especially if small roads might be busy. So I reckon we will hammer on down to LM on the Sunday. Big Respect to those who were doing the crossing 60 years ago... Title: Re:Travelling down on Sunday before the race? Post by: Lord Steve on May 09, 2004, 10:16:30 am Smokie
Got some friends who are making the crossing the same time as you in a convoy of WW2 military vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, half tracks, jeeps etc. You don't wanna get your Carlton and caravan stuck in the middle of that lot! I've been considering purchasing a jeep or small armoured car for the LM journey for a while now. Just the speed of getting down there that puts me off. I'd do anything to see the faces of French customs at the port if I rolled off the ferry in a Scorpion! Rubber tracks of course!

Well done to get the landing day on the ferry crossing. Security will be everywhere when you get to France. Access to the beaches is by permit only so expect the roads to be clogged with traffic. A Union Jack and a big sign LeMans or Bust should do the trick. Straght up the beach and don't stop untill you reach Maison Blanche: " Hold until relieved" Low Flyers to commence after area is secured ::) Canada Phil Title: Re:Travelling down on Sunday before the race? Well there might be some left by the time you get there. (Bring on the bucket!!!) Title: Re:Travelling down on Sunday before the race? Smokie, you are towing a caravan ? why not sleep in it ? Oh and the British Legion are going to plant lots of little Union Flags on the beaches to remember those who lost their lives. You can donate to have a flag placed for you on line at British Legion. ???? Respect and big Thanks You to those who have given us the chance to live happily ( until tony blair that is ) Title: Re:Travelling down on Sunday before the race? Post by: Snoring Rhino on May 16, 2004, 06:30:02 pm Talking of Tanks has anyone ever taken one? a Scorpian would be ideal, can you imagin the look on the french polices faces!
I did my apprenticship at MVEE Chobam in the mid to late 70's, we had 2 ideal tools, 1st a Scorpian with a 302cu ford V8! it was used for high speed track tests (85 mph is about the limit before they let go - do'nt want to be in the way!!) the motor was mounted in the back, it had open Header stacks sticking out behind - it was the hotest tank ever, used to pull wheelies - was very hairy and sounded awsome ;D ;D ;D. The other was the ultimate water pistol - it was a Saracen armored car with a hydrogen powered water gun. It had a big water tank in the back where the troops would normally sit, 2 hyrogen cyliners strapped to the out side and the water cannon mouted on the roof. the only problem was that the "balls" of water would take the bark off of trees!!! - deemed to dangerous for cival unrest! dont see the problem myself, but thats civil servants for you. It would centainly sort out the blokes with the super soakers! The Establishment has closed down now - I wonder what happen to them!!!!! ::) ::) Title: Re:Travelling down on Sunday before the race?
