Title: BMW in Group LM GT
Post by: GT3RS on April 27, 2004, 02:46:11 am
Will we ever see BMW in Group LM GT? Or do we have to wait for the new V-8 M3 before things even out enough for a proper foil?

What do you mean wait for the BMW V8 I heard that we are going to get it in September which must mean that the Germans have already got it?? We might therefor see one in the next two years at LM.

I'm looking for something else to race. You get tired of racing your own family (other Porsche 996) after a while and I think it would be more interesting for the spectators. I liked the TVRs but they could only do about as well as everyone expected. And the Ferrari teams? 24 hours is a long time for a Ferrari.

This is actually a very interesting topic. I share your view that GT is a bit monotonous - 996's dominate and have done for the last few years - quite justifiably, as they are fantastic sportscars. I think they are as popular and successful as they have become, because the GT3 is a turn-key track car. Same goes for 360 Modena, to a lesser degree. I'd love to see some variety, other than bad jokes. With development, the TVR Tuscan could be competitive - but why hasn't anyone ever campaigned an XKR Jaguar, as they do here in US, or a DB7, or a Corvette, or a Quattroporte Maserati? Honda NSX, and Nissan Skyline have raced with a degree of success at Le Mans, as have Venturi and De Thomaso. I suppose I must also mention Spyker, even though it is a hideous pile of sheot.
Trouble is, there is no money or glory in GT. This is the supposed "Gentleman Racer" class, where, it seems, you either stump-up for your racing enjoyment, or beg for your budget from suckers like us.
