Title: 2nd year at Le Mans - what to do?
Post by: MikeH on March 25, 2004, 03:16:49 pm
Just booked my holiday :D :D :D :D :D :D

Coach tour again sadly, but I doubt I'll bother with sleep!

Anyway, I had a great time last year, watched from the pit straight, all the way round to Tetre Rouge, also visited the Mulsanne straight!

Anything I should do this year? I'd like to go to the Mulsanne again, what's the best route? Last year I fell into a bog type thing in a field, up to my knees, and my mate got his legs all cut up! The guy on the gate on the way back in gave us a funny look...

Anyway, is it possible to get the Porsche curves? And can you get to the inside of the Mulsanne straight or Mulsanne corner?

What's the interior of the circuit like (I watched from the inside of the Esses, but went back over the bridge. Can you get to any parts of the track that are normally closed from there?

Cheers, and looking forward to it!

Do what ever you want , but maybe come and enjoy a dram or 2 at the chapers bar on saturday night.

You can watch at the porsche curves easily just walk down the road towards the signs for Arnage village

The interior of the circuit looks like a huge campsite. I think

I've been going over 20 years and this is my routine...

arrive at pit straight for start nomally by midday, drink, drink, drink...

at 4pm watch a couple of laps, drink, drink, drink....

then go to champagne bar for evening, drink, drink, drink...

similar thing sunday, watch another couple of laps at finish, drink, drink, drink

then in the evening go to Arnage for food and you guessed it drink drin, drink

hope this helps, don't bother with all that walking around lookig for cars!

MikeH, I'm amazed you're asking that question.

Surely at the top of your list should be a visit to MB campsite for a portion of my battered sausage.

.....look for the flag.

Getting to the inside of Mulsanne is a nightmare of forest, bogs and gendarmes.   The only places you haven't mentioned are the spectator areas on the outside of Mulsanne corner and at the Indianapolis/Arnage complex - the latter in particular is well worth it, but needs transport - not sure if there is any form of shuttle bus to it, as we drive there.

Indianapolis & arnage corners have a great viewing area on an embankment, which is relatively close to the track, get the shuttle bus from the stop opposite the main entrance. It only goes one way on a big loop with a second stop on the straight after the mulsanne roundabout.

Getting the bus back (from mulsanne) is a bit hard as it is a freeforall, which could end in tears! Bloody foreigners have no concept of q's.

It does eat into the drinking time though.

After midnight try to blag your way into some of the "corporate"
areas on the inside before the first mulsanne chicane. We did last year, the bar had closed but the view was good, but not as good as from the garden of a private house overlooking the mulsanne the year before!
I couldn't tell you how to get there though and I doubt the German driver could either as he was more pi$$ed than I was

make a mental note to do it properly in 2005 & take a tent.

abs is right, I didn't have a campsite booked for the first 2 years, without a car there's always space for a small tent, its probably in the puddle behind the toilet block but beggars can't etc !

Depending on where you live it might evan be cheaper to go on public transport, you can then arrive when you want and leave Monday and experience the full 96 + hours!

We were considering it but my girlfriend's going, and I don't think she'd be too happy.

If she doesn't want to go again after this year we'll probably drive down next year.

Mike, not sure what sleep if any you get, but trust me I done the coach thing the first year I went and got back to the coach and shared it with some guy who could snore for England and a couple of young lads that thought it was a good idea to do the bungee after a skinfull and throw up everywhere...

This still happens in the camping sites but at least you can close the tent flap behind you!!!

I'm sure your girlfriend will thank you in the end ;D ;D

The first year i was on a coach i went back in the night to get some sleep and some barstard several rows back drop a real fruity fart, the smell rolled down the coach like a deadly gas and woke people up. One whiff and i was off the coach. Travelled on coaches after that but never slept on them, too dangerous!

Yeah we went on a coach last year, and took tents, the ground was a bit hard, but we could go back when we wanted, the coach shut at 11.30pm, and we went to bed at 6am! :D
