Title: Le Mans App Post by: Oldtimer 2 on April 29, 2016, 03:50:08 pm I am thinking of downloading an App for the race to access official timings/classifications whilst track side. Has anybody tried any of the various offerings before? Any recommendations?
Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Bonio on April 29, 2016, 04:03:21 pm WEC app is ok for live timing but if you are at the circuit you will find that the bandwidth is strangled so it does not work that well. That probably can be said for all apps too unless you can find a good wifi spot.
Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: aricus654 on April 29, 2016, 10:10:43 pm What wifi is available at the circuit? Is there any that is free or only through ACO membership? And if so, what do you get as basic ACO membership? Aricus Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Bonio on April 29, 2016, 10:53:17 pm None that I am aware of. Hence why I said if you can find any wifi. Maybe one of the local bars may have something.
Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Barry on April 29, 2016, 11:27:58 pm Bandwidth very poor at the circuit, just to many people trying to use it, if you can find a hub to use.
4G might work better, but I don't have a lot of experience using it, rely on Radio Le Mans and the big screens. Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Kristof on April 30, 2016, 02:47:37 am twitter.com/clubarnage ;D
Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Steve Pyro on April 30, 2016, 08:50:43 am If you have ACO membership, there is wifi at their 'enclosures' (although not in the ACO tribunes). It requires a one off access code and is pretty lousy.
In my opinion, another reason why I dropped my membership. Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: aricus654 on May 11, 2016, 08:28:41 am Does anyone know if the circuit gets decent 4g coverage? Aricus Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: Barry on May 11, 2016, 09:47:24 am Does anyone know if the circuit gets decent 4g coverage? Paul or Russell are the people to ask, they use their phones a lot whilst on the circuit. ACO are continually improving things at the circuit, but in past years I've had trouble getting a 2G signal. Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: ukcobra on May 11, 2016, 12:14:08 pm Last year the App never worked for me, it was possibly due to bandwidth issues.
It never updated. Wifi is virtually non-existent in previous years, and as my Le Man buddy is no longer an ACO member, we don't get into their areas with Wifi anymore. I am a Three customer, so the Feel at Home service works OK for email and Messaging services, and I use a Thee MiFi as well. Neither of these are good enough to stream video in my experience. Unless there's a massive improvement in bandwidth then the simple answer is no. 4G was available last year on Weds and Thurs and I guess Fri but I wasn't on site much then. Saturday & Sunday you can forget it Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: aricus654 on May 11, 2016, 08:43:44 pm I'm sure that I saw a local WiFi on Houx last year - did anyone use it? Is there a copyright issue? I bought the Le Mans 24h by Robert Bech from the Apple Store This has a fraction of the information in the guide, in fact probably about 4 pages worth, but no more. If, for example, there was information/data lifted from the ACO's website then yes there's a copyright issue. But if we are simply seeking to digitise our own collective wisdom then I suspect that there's no issue. Against any possible revenue stream we need to keep an eye on costs, unless we have some clever souls who do this sort of thing for a living? I have paid for and downloaded the last few year's of The Guide. My only criticism is that it's a very large document due, I guess, to the fantastic photos that are inserted. As a result I wonder if there could be a "lite" version of the guide that trims down the size of the PDF to something more manageable? I'm no techno expert but suspect that if the photos are of a lower resolution or even if they are omitted from the "lite" version then the file will be that much smaller? Title: Re: Le Mans App Post by: aricus654 on May 17, 2016, 10:04:01 pm Parking the copyright issues fir now. I've looked into this a bit, well, bought my local wire head a coffee..... It seems that if we were to create an app that accessed the data in the guide that was held centrally on a server then that is relatively simple using something like Wordpress. But if we wanted the data and the app together so that the user doesn't incur data roaming charges then that is rather more complicated. And then there's Apple and Android platforms to consider. Do we have any CAers that are familiar with app dev? Aricus |
