Title: No more grid girls at WEC
Post by: Jason on April 03, 2015, 12:34:47 pm
WEC announced yesterday that the era of grid girls is over, posted on their facebook page this morning:

Quote from: FIAWEC
Dear ‪#‎WEC‬ Fans, here's a small message about the news that there'll be longer grid girls at our races:

WEC garages, paddocks, grandstands, hospitality & media rooms full of beautiful women, always much appreciated by everyone not just before start. We have many more beautiful women who work with the WEC than just those holding number panels.

On the grid we believe cars are the beauties & LM-style start echoes Spirit of Le Mans ethos communicated in all we do.

i have to be honest, as a sport we are Way past their time. In a way it wouldn't have been so bad if there had also been grid-boys, to attract some females to the crowd, I know a few series in the UK tried that, but it didn't work. But while we are trying to say that motorsport is as much for women, they can be engineers, drivers, senior team personnel, why are we then dressing them up is skintight clothes to 'promote' the sport in a male biased way?

Having spoken to a few of the girls over the years, I also know that a lot of them like doing it, and fair play to them for doing so. But there has to be a middle ground. F1 doesn't do scantilly clad brolly dollies, but dresses them to look like air hostesses. Perhaps, a mix of male/female in 'traditional' dress on the grid could have been a way forward?

Also, the traditional pit wall herringbone grid lineup will return for each round

Whoever wrote that doesn't understand English either.

Is this the result of yet another EU directive?

This is another case of political correctness run amok.  Good fricking grief, we're being reduced to a bunch of panty wearing candy-asses.  At the end of the WEC races are they going to give everyone a trophy, so that way no one loses, and everyone gets a bag of orange slices & a juice box.  As Lofty said, Sheene, and Hunt are puking in their graves.

You might have, but loads of us ave not.I feel the need for a protest. I can imagine( i am a bit pissed though) the Club Arnarge grid geezers parade on friday down the pit straight We all know a few blokes who thrive on dressing up like birds. Lee would make a great lead pom pom girl/cheer leader.

Not always grown up for the better.  In forty-four years of attending racing of every conceivable discipline, I can never once remember hearing any man, woman, or child complaining about the sight of grid, or brolly girls at a race.  I suppose the memories of Paul Newman posing with the Hawaiian tropic girls before the start in 1979 are best resigned to memory anyway, the sport is a pathetic shadow of what is was then.
I'd like to find out how I can get the job of coming up with asinine directives like a ban on grid girls, some bright spark is probably getting paid good money to sit at a desk and come up with nonsense like that.  This actually working for a living is for the birds (no offense to birds intended, someone might be put off, gotta be careful).

This blog post sums up quite well my response to the WEC grid-girls decision :

Who knew after all the years that brolly girls are the spawn of Satan!  This is laughable, my wife has been attending races for years, seen countless grid girls and has never once felt insulted, or demeaned by what they represent, hell, she's had her photo taken with Pirelli girls at Sebring.  She purchased a Honda Civic a few years ago, and I can safely say that whether or not Honda has grid girls at a race, was never a factor in her decision.   This is the WEC trying to be seen as forward thinking, or clever, but its much ado about nothing.  If someone is sitting around genuinally bothered about the social and moral impact of brolly girls? For crying out loud, they make medication for that...
There are far more important issues facing motor racing, and the world as a whole.

No it hasn't, it has always been a part of the grid razamatazz, also a good gig for models to earn from. They will be sacking Jeramy Clarkson next.

Don't think the teams publicity girls are banned, just the girls who hold the grid position boards and the brollies. Whether ACO will join in, we will have to see.
Silverstone can probably be blamed for this, after last years WEC, when 3 of the girls had to be treated for hypothermia because they hadn't been issued with suitable kit.
However the job will still have to be done, new career move for Leighla?

Barry, while you blame Silverstone, they do not hire the girls or supply them their clothes. That is an agency hired by the ACO/FIA.
As for the job still needing to be done, what job? They will now line up echelon along the pit wall, being placed by marshals (who already did the job) and team personnel

None of the girls ever looked comfortable - usually either cold or wet or both

But the words "organ" and "stops" keep going through my mind

Cold and wet at Silverstone? Perhaps you need to get out more often. The grid girls further South in the warm look nice and comfortable.

It was tough picking which of your posts on this subject to choose as an illustration of your (and other like-minded individuals') mind-blowing narrow mindedness and intellectual limitations but in the end this was my choice.

If ever we needed a reminder of why you now run with the tag 'Boorish Grobian' this surely is it...

Hey Oldtimer, its always fun to get under your skin.  Glad to be of service.
The more I think about this ban on grid girls, the more I'm convinced this is just a PR stunt by the WEC folks, drum up some controversy sort of thing.

Oldtimer, or should I call you Hooray (or do you prefer Mr. Henry).  I'm truly honored that you've chosen to take valuable moments out of your life (which you'll never get back) and devote them to taking shots at me.  I am so very flattered by your preoccupation with me, but before you get your hopes up, I should let you know in advance, I am married.
Just curious, do you actually have a opinion on the thread topic?

If you are unable to deduce my opinions on the thread topic from my posts then your intellectual limitations are more serious than I thought.
