Title: "Speed Dreams ... the Fastest Place on Earth" - BBC 2 Sunday 6th jan 10pm
Post by: Nordic on January 02, 2013, 10:34:48 pm
There is a listing for a program called 'Bonneville, A summer of speed.

The program guide says the program follows a group of brits building and running a car at speed week. No idea if it means 2012 or way before.

This is the documentary that was being filmed by the BBC when I was at Bonneville for Speed Week in August 2012.

The programme is in two parts (both on BBC2 Sunday 10 pm) on Jan 6th and 13th.  The documentary follows 5 British teams from developing and building their bikes (and 1 car with a bike engine) to going to Bonneville and running on the Salt.

I was interviewed in a 'piece to camera' on the Salt - that will probably end up on the cutting room floor.

BBC details here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pvbdv (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pvbdv)

Most excellent, looking foward to next weeks edition. what I can't understand is why there are so few spectators? Is it because it is a long way out or it is restricted?

Maybe this has something to do with it:

Top tip... if you are a shorts+boxers type of bloke... sunscreen on the meat and 2 veg is a MUST... reflection off the Salt is LETHAL. Newbies out there walking like John Wayne....

Hahaha! I was wondering about that when the pasty legged Brits arrived in shorts. I was thinking, "This is gonna be painful for them!"

I really enjoyed the programme, and it gave me something to do at 3a.m. yesterday when I couldn't sleep due to jetlag. Unfortunately the programme was slightly tainted by the chap with the Indian who reminded me of a complete c*nt I used to know and wish I'd never met.

It certainly isn't restricted.  We just sailed up in a 30 foot motor-home and paid the spectators fee.  I asked "where do we go".  The reply was "anywhere this side of the start line".
There are two parallel courses (5 mile and 7 mile) with the start lines about 200 yards apart.  We parked the motor home between the two start lines and wandered about all day looking at the bikes and cars forming up to run.

As can be seen from my pic above, you can wander about anywhere.  I am stood at the start line.
Later, we drove the RV up to the paddock area (huge) which is away to the north of the tracks.  Again everyone was most accommodating and happy to chat about anything.

I guess there aren't many spectators because Bonneville really is in the middle of nowhere and land speed racing is somewhat of a minority sport ..... but I love it  ;D

In this pic, I am at the start line (mile 0).  I luckily avoided barbecuing my gonads.
