Title: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: oldtimer on December 28, 2012, 07:07:18 pm Just watched last night's programme with Sir Patrick Stewart's thoughtful and well presented homage to Sir Stirling Moss. Well worth a watch on the I-player if you missed out yesterday. Looking forward to tonight's programme at 20.00 with James Martin looking at the life of Sir Jackie Stewart... No offence though Mr M but I will be surprised if it is as good as last night's show. Go on prove me wrong...

Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Snoring Rhino on December 30, 2012, 12:54:18 am Watched both programs, both excellent, some very moving footage of the dangers in both era's and Stewart's brave and sometimes unpopular safety improvement initiatives. Did James Stewart, or Martin for that matter (although I believe he does own an old Benneton), drive those cars that quick at the end of the program? Yes, Martin's use of "Formulae" was very irritating.
Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: oldtimer on December 30, 2012, 01:23:21 am Yes, Martin's use of "Formulae" was very irritating. You can say that again! Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: landman on December 30, 2012, 09:56:48 pm Basic Math(s) for you all
James+Martin=Total+wank3r If you don't believe me ask any teacher. ;D Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Grand_Fromage on January 01, 2013, 03:39:38 pm Sounded more like "form-lee-ar" to me and sometimes "for-mil-ee" (for Milly?).
It is very common for small children to mispronounce words by either inverting syllables or by substituting vowels. People who grow to adulthood without learning to read properly (for whatever reason) often continue the habit. If you can't actually spell 'formula', how can you be expected to pronounce it? Enjoyed it........but the use of Formulae instead of Formula by James so pi$$ed me off !!!!!!!! . . . . .or can he just not say Formula? Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: enzo on January 09, 2013, 11:56:08 am Did anyone else hear that the BBC pull the second of 3 of these programmes about Colin Mcrae by Chris Hoy for some mysterious reason.
Couple of rumours going around one in particular surrounding the fact that the air accident investigation found Mcrae responsible for the helicopter crash (in which two children died) and the beeb being very jittery about child welfare at the moment. Shame really would have been good to see. Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: John G on January 09, 2013, 12:13:21 pm Recent quote from a reliable source:
"The McRae profile has not been permanently pulled, and will appear in the New Year." Lets hope this proves to be the case Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: LuxExpat on January 09, 2013, 04:59:33 pm Basic Math(s) for you all James+Martin=Total+wank3r If you don't believe me ask any teacher. ;D You don't like him very much, do you? ;) Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: landman on January 09, 2013, 05:12:49 pm Err, no.
Worst thing is he lives not too from me rather than back in his native Yorkshire. Reminds me of another Yorkshireman I also know. Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Jules G on January 21, 2013, 10:05:12 am The third and final part of the Racing Legends will be aired next Sunday 27th Jan @ 10pm
Sir Chris Hoy retraces Colin McRaes life Should be a good un with Colin's dad Jimmy featuring as you would expect. Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: JDS on January 28, 2013, 08:12:32 am I thought it was a well put together bit of TV. I was also impressed that it did not shy away from the AAIB finding on the crash too - that would have rose-tinted the whole program in my opinion.
Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Chris24 on January 28, 2013, 10:37:08 am Yes a very well put together programme even if it didn't mention his year with Citroen or his Skoda drives. Oh and I spotted myself on the programme as well. :)
Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Fran on January 28, 2013, 11:37:30 am Hmm - I seem to be in the minority here!
I thought CMcR came across as a bit of a plonker (even before the events surrounding his death) and Sir Chris was as dull as ditchwater. For me it was the weakest of the three programmes although I loved the rally footage. His dad seemed a lovely chap. Minority, not quite.I thought CMcR came across as a bit of a plonker (even before the events surrounding his death) and Sir Chris was as dull as ditchwater. For me it was the weakest of the three programmes although I loved the rally footage. His dad seemed a lovely chap. I know its not easy, but McRae was too happy to drive at 12/10. 11/10 you might just get away with. He took too many risks, including the final one. And his dad did seem a lovely chap, as is Richard Burns' dad Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Brad Zarse on January 28, 2013, 02:47:28 pm Firstly - I really enjoyed the programme. As a historical document it was interesting (although did miss some weird stuff out - like the Skoda and Citroen drives previously mentioned) but it came across as un-biased - as previously mentioned, the AAIB findings being critical in maintaining the integrity of the programme.
Some of the stuff within the programme suggested to me, that the family very much accepted that McRae was a reckless individual. You get the impression that those he left behind have (as is completely to be expected) some pretty serious demons with regards to McRae's life, and the circumstances surrounding his death, and the death of his son - which is perhaps the bigger tragedy of the two. McRae was another one of my Heros, who once sat alongside the likes of Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Ayrton Senna, and Richard Burns in my mind. This programme bizarrely altered my view slightly - perhaps I'm just a bit more grown up now (believe it or not) - I simply can't get it out of my head, that he flew a helicopter recklessly, with his 5 year old son in it. A rally car at 12/10ths - absolutely - but a Helicopter? With your son in it. It makes my heart sink. I'll never forget the RAC Rally special stages at Silverstone - The draw brought him onto the start line against Tommi Makkinen - the DREAM race - it was fast, spectacular, and when he won the stage, the place went mad....It was a wonderful event on a great day - but nowadays, I can't "un-associate" it, with the recklessness that lost McRae not only 3 other WRC Titles. But ultimately his own life, and the life of others. FTR - I quite liked Chris Hoys contribution..... Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Jules G on January 28, 2013, 02:49:37 pm Well I thought it was a good balanced program with some excellent footage of the old school rally days.
Jimmy is a great bloke, he was in attendance at Chester Race course a few years ago when the Subaru owners handed over a large cheque to Jimmy for the Colin McRae foundation. Whilst an emotional day for him, especially with footage been played on a loop of Colin careerer on the race course screens he had time to speak to everybody and you could tell he was as any father is, proud of Colin's achievements. As a footnote, the year Colin signed his first professional contract with Prodrive in 1991, I competed in first first pro rally, the Talkland International. Proud to say that I signed onto the event and also scrutineering at the same time as Colin and Derek Ringer and then followed his wheel tracks through the North Yorkshire forests ;D Photo of me in my Nova Sport below taken in Dalby Forest during the 1991 event [img(http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh114/JulesGee/image001_zpscf383d35.png)][/img] Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: Nordic on February 04, 2013, 08:22:50 pm Err, no. Its was mentioned to me that James Martin is driving an Aston Martin at le man's this year. Not clear if it is in the historic event or the main event. Can't be true surely! Title: Re: Racing Legends - BBC2 Post by: JDS on February 04, 2013, 09:20:57 pm Classic or otherwise if he's there lets hope he drives better and is a bit less of a twat than he was in the Mille Miglia ....
