Title: Termietermite
Post by: Kpy on July 04, 2011, 08:56:57 pm
I hear through a roundabout route that Deb is unwell.
Seems that what she called a "bug" after race weekend is more serious and she's in hospital.
I know that many of us would like to pass our best wishes on to her.

Well, CA still does what it says on the tin, I see! Thanks for all the warm messages on here. Briefly, last Thursday Deb had been to see her surgeon at LM hospital, who had "signed her off" as being beyond further maintenance! This means she will not benefit from any more surgery until she has a new knee - which he says will be after he has retired! This helps the insurers to close the matter, so any compensation may become payable this year, we now think.

On arriving home, she was in her wheelchair, and bent forward to pick something off the floor, when something abdominal went "pop", and she started to feel bloated. We saw the doc that afternoon, who prescribed anti-bloat, as well as other things to stop Deb throwing up, which she had done in the surgery! [I was ready with a poly-bag, natch.] Over the weekend things did not improve, so yesterday we got the doc in here, and she prescribed a trip to hospital. This required a proper ambulance - most "ambulances" in France are just saloon cars - so Deb could be horizontal, quite important when you suddenly feel & look preggers! Deb has now rung a couple of times, is still in effect in A&E, but has been given food (could she eat at last?) and the surmise to date is that there is an infection, possibly of the liver, but clearly they do not envisage early surgery, hence the food.

As I've posted elsewhere, the most bizarre part of all this was early Monday, when I went to the loo in the night, Deb was using her commode - and asked me whether she was on tablets, as she'd found some on her bed, and she felt strangely bloated. She had no recollection whatever of the previous 4 days' events, didn't know what day it was, and couldn't remember 5 minutes later that I'd said it was Monday. You all know how bright she is - probably a bit brighter than me, I often think - so my jaw dropped a bit! We have agreed I will not visit just yet - and we have a man coming to measure up for a stair-lift today, and another chap ditto tomorrow, so those are important "steps" too! More anon.

Get well soon Deb.  Ian - you make sure you look after yourself as well - times like these often lead to people who want to look after the sick pushing themselves too hard - which just causes more issues!

Without wishing to speculate - it sounds very similar to the water infections that my grandparents had.  At one point, he didn't know who I was!  Once the infection was cleared, he was back to his lucid (and cheeky self) so keep your pecker up - I'm sure they'll get it sorted.

In the meantime, please do send her our love.

Perhaps someone could set up a message book and put all the messages into a card for her or something?

Brad, same with my grandad when he had a serious bladder infection! I watched the 1996 League Cup final with him from his hospital bed in Birmingham. Villa, of course, beat Leeds 3-0. As the final whistle blew, the old boy promptly started demanding that the nurses bring him Brian Little (the then Villa manager) immdiately. "Get me Brian Little! Get me Brian Little!" over and over again. He simply couldn't understand why the victorious Little wasn't able to attend his bedside.

He had terrible bowel trouble, and even though he was a stickler for Fibogel - The Bowel Regulator, a duodenal ulcer eventually did for him (grandad that is, not Brian Little, sh*t results did for him).

Deb spent some hours with a tube up her nose, down her throat to her tum, to release gas. She rang me a couple of times, and it doesn't do much for your voice! Later this afternoon she had a scan. As a result, she's spending the night in the Gynaecology Department, with every likelihood that she will shortly be dispensing with some bits she never had any use for anyway.... Doh!

Deb must have been naughty, as the gaeni lot threw her out after 24 hrs. She is now back in the general hospital, who are charged with finding the root problem. On oxygen, still can't eat, sleeping a lot. Not great. People looking at her scan ask if she'd had a fall. I wonder if this is from her accident?

Spa 24 not looking likely at present.

I try! Managing about 6-6.5 hrs at present, but then you wake up and start thinking negative what-ifs, which ain't helpful. Deb was on the phone at 9, had had a drug overnight which kept her busy in the loo (night staff not impressed, nor impressive in their attitude) but some reduction in bloating today, so a result of sorts. Much giggling, so she isn't completely downcast. Support on here means a lot to us both, TVM!

Jules was that you cringing just in front of me and my loud mouthed lad in Wemberley, he got a bit shirty at someone sitting in seats supplied by Tommy Johnson when Leeds had their decent ten minutes  :)

Andy no doubt you were as diplomatic as ever about Brian's inability to keep an appointment…

I spent about half an hour chatting with Sid Cowans, Gary Shaw and a few other Villains during the match. Sid asked me if I recognised him and his wife after I'd attended to a steering lock problem on her Escort Cab.

Deb has had a biopsy, and a very effective drain in the abdomen. So effective, I insisted on sitting on the other side of the bed from the bag! The saline drip has been withdrawn. A little more Deb "fire" was on display tonight, but it hurt if I made her laugh, so of course.....

Deb is eating a bit - first real food in a week. Not using oxygen, either. Drip has been withdrawn, but she did have some blood-plasma instead. The bone sample from her sternum was a failure, so now she's had one from her bottom. Some time after the procedure was over, the nurse came in to inspect the bottom, and pronounced it "parfait". I think she was a bit taken aback when I agreed!

Deb has had an MRI scan today, has  some other sort tomorrow, is booked for yet another variety next week. Still no suggestions as to what is wrong, but the bloating that started all this has not returned, 4 days after she was drained. She is always a v fussy eater, & hospital meals aren't exactly hitting the spot!

Sick visiting can be an - er - interesting experience. Yesterday I arrived to find a grumpy lobster. Most of Deb was bright red, and because it is all so itchy, she hadn't slept much. Eating was beyond her, too. I didn't stay long! Today her car needed servicing, so I dumped it at the dealer and caught the tram to the hospital. No sign of Deb, who had gone for another scan! Deb appeared just before I returned having got the car back. She'd been gone 3 hours for a 15 min scan. So far the scans haven't identified anything to cause her problems and her lungs are fine after 35 years smoking - but she has something on her uterus, something on her brain. I'm cancelling our annual trip to the 24 hrs of Spa. Yawn.

NB We have two weekend tickets for Spa. They are paid online tickets in the name of Deborah Dudley, and the Ts & Cs say they are not transferable. Nevertheless, the chances of anyone asking for ID when you exchange them are limited, so if anyone wants these dodgy tickets, I'll send them free. If they work, they save you some money. If they don't, you haven't paid for them!

Title: Re: Termietermite
Post by: knetter on July 14, 2011, 08:45:43 am
I'll take them Ian, if nobody else beat me to it. Do they state on the tickets that they have to be exchanged at the information center? Cause last time for the 1000 km they did check ID when I picked up my ticks! How Deb will recover soon, give her my best!

Termie is still punching - she actually so likes the "Grumpy Lobster" monicker that she fancies she might adopt it when she comes back on dry land! Better today, with less itching and some fading of the red. As it was Bastille Day, she didn't see a doctor all day - it's a national holiday. Frankly, I don't "get" the French. On this day in 1789 they changed everything, but since then they've changed nothing - many of the laws date back to Napoleon, and are about as relevant as the Saga of Noggin the Nog. If they still moved forward, kept pushing, they might become something, but instead the bureaucrats rule and everyone just shrugs. Sad, really. Doesn't really affect a couple of retired old ghytts, natch, but all the same.....

Took Deb down to the entrance today in a hospital wheelchair, hoping to do a tour of the grounds, but it was breezy and spitting with rain, so we snuck back under cover for a few minutes, then went to the cafe. Made a change, and she is so much better than she was. An intensive eye-test on Friday revealed nothing sinister - except a (common at our age, apparently) potential for a detached retina. This week may well be a turning point in getting to the bottom of it all, with the gynae people probably having another look now D is stronger, and a Positron Emission Tomography scan on Tuesday. That was booked a fortnight ago, suggesting that it is an important and valuable technique, not to be readily had like an x-ray!

Deb has had another couple of days of scans. Today was a PET scan, very high tech. That was at 13.30, so she hadn't eaten since last night. Finally back in her room late afternoon, had her (saved) lunch on the table, about to tuck in, when doctor appears and says come back - they've missed your feet! Isotopes still live inside her, so back she went. Doh!

She actually seems much better to me, and we hope she'll be fit enough to go back to gynae, where they can conduct a biopsy on whatever the original scan found was not nice in her uterus. Today, though, they got a result from an exam on her, umm, output, which led them to insist that anyone emptying her bedpan wear a mask and gloves! Since she's had the bedpan taken away, because now she's not on a drip she can get to her loo unaided, it all seems a bit pointless. Anyway, her digestive tract does seem to have recovered its composure now, so we suspect what they found has already been knocked on the head by the antibiotics she was given due to the rash which was caused by - no-one knows!

Because she's been downstairs having scans etc, Deb hadn't actually seen a doc (as distinct from radiologist, who are also qualified, of course) since Friday. She mentioned this to the nurse this morning - and she's just had a visit from 3! They intend to find out what is in her uterus pronto. While this may prove to be bad news, at least it will be progress.

Deb had a lumbar puncture this afternoon, and sees the anaesthetist tomorrow morning, with a view to having an operation allowing a full exam of her uterus etc so that the lump can be at least partly removed and analysed. She remains in good form, and pleased that at last we may know more.

Deb is indeed home for the weekend - but has not had the mental energy to turn on her PC, so I'm sorry you haven't heard from her. In the last couple of days we've had some grim news - and Lee Self's mention of prognosis is sadly spot-on. Deb is due for an operation next Thursday which purports to be a biopsy, but they will be trying to remove whatever they can from the tumour on her left ovary. After that there will be analysis and eventually a prognosis, which will offer whatever remedial measures are appropriate, according to how far things have gone. The news then may not be all bad, of course. But you can all imagine what we are imagining. Sorry to be a bit downbeat!

Hi all

This will be very brief as I just have a few hours before I have to go back to the hospital to get ready for Thursday's op.  All in all it's been a tough few days but I cannot emphasise enough how much you guys all mean to us and how much your good wishes help things along.  The doc said "there's plenty we can do" so I don't expect to be stepping off the planet quite yet.   Mr T will no doubt keep you all posted and I hope to see you all again soon.  Sadly Spa is out (sorry to miss one of your rare visits, Randy!) but at the very least I'm looking at the idea of Estoril in September.  Silverstone is sadly out as we have our meeting with the accident insurers.  With luck they will now agree to pay compensatin then it's Porker, here we come, if they cough up enough!  Life has to have some upsides doens't it?

Thanks so much to all of you, as ever, for the many messages of love and support.  You cannot know how much they mean until something of this sort happens to you but CA is indeed a very special place.  Take care of Mr T for me over the next few weeks as they are going to be pretty tough, one way and another.

Love to all.  Deb  :-* :-* :-*

Good luck and do take care.

SWMBO had a growth on her lady bits a few years back.  I recollect that it was a bit of a whopper too. It all seems relatively routine, and there's hardly a scar now, not that I'm allowed to look.  Mind you she hadn't broken most of her major bones beforehand.

Trivia still happen in illness. We learnt today that Deb will not be charged a supplement for the single room she has had for three weeks - because she didn't ask for it! That means we still have 30 days single room entitlement under our "top up" insurance, which should take care of most of the rest of this event, we hope. Lovely intern put her arm round Deb while talking about the situation. They don't all do that. Deb goes to gynae 0900 tomorrow.

The "camera" up Deb's nose and down her throat is in fact a feeding tube! They've found that after certain sorts of surgery, it helps avoid nausea. It may be withdrawn tomorrow. It does mean she can talk. I have spent much of today's visit rubbing almond oil into her legs - her skin is perilously dry, and she has had another minor outbreak of lobster-itis, which continues to intrigue the medics. Mid-afternoon, a mature lady in cap, gown and mask appeared - the anaesthetist from yesterday, checking on progress. Impressive or what?  We have to wait a week before the results of the biopsy are known, but Deb already feels the headache she'd had for 3 weeks has just gone. Recovery has started, surely!

Come on girl, out of that bed and lets hear from you!
Well we are trying! I bought a 3G dongle for her netbook - would you believe that in order to use it for more than a couple of weeks, I need to register it (by French law) including a copy of my passport photo and details page? Hitler's lot may have been kicked out in 1944, but you feel the Gestapo are still here!

Feeding tube now withdrawn, as is catheter. Other "shore supplies" will all be gone by tomorrow night.

CA-ers will be aware that Deb speaks pretty good French (much, much better than mine) but even so, there are words she doesn't know. After the op, during which the abdomen is inflated with gas to make surgery easier, the medics were asking her whether she'd been able to do something? What were they asking? Eventually they managed to get the message across - had she been able to fart yet? Futher details will not be provided here - a girl is entitled to some dignity!

Well, I'd said I wouldn't mention the f-word again, but Deb thought you all deserved to hear the tale.

By 14.30 today she still hadn't "broken wind" but by 14.35, she had. A few mins later a nurse popped in - "I've farted!" said Deb. "Ooh, good!" said the nurse, and opened the door to tell her colleague, who just had to then pass it on to another nurse. "She's farted!" was thus going up and down the corridor on a Sunday afternoon. And you thought it was a subject women never mention except when you've been unpleasant!

I'm so glad Debs is on the mend, and so glad to hear that Frence nurses have the same sense of humour as me.

I think women are only allowed to do this after they had been married.

I understand, that the word "petard" (as in "hoisted by ones own") is derived from the French word for fart, a petard being a small explosive device.  I've hovercrafted a bit, but never gained any serious altitude.

Interesting point on the 3G Dongle - little hope of picking one up just for June

The regulation seems to be that they must disconnect you after two weeks if you haven't registered your details. That would cover most race-goers' needs, anyway. Just don't expect to be able to use the same dongle next year. I have no idea how this "one-use" price compares to the higher per-minute cost of using an existing UK dongle in France for the same period.

By the way, phones are just the same. I bought a pay-as-you-go phone some years back and had to give the shop full name, rank and number stuff. By contrast, the Virgin phone I bought in 2004 in London had no similar requirement, and has never been registered with anyone.

It would be nice if I thought this was about security in the C21 - but I think it's just a combination of paranoia and bureaucracy, helpfully creating jobs at the same time!

Please do not make me laugh.  I still have stitches (well, staples as it happens).

Finally I have connected the 3G as I am now tubeless for the first time for some time and able to sit in the chair for long enough to reconnect to the rest of the planet.

What happens next is that when the lump has been anaysed  then they have a departmental pow-wow on Friday, during which my future treatment (and others' of course) is discussed and decided upon.  As Mme la surgeon managed to get all of it, and remove both the deseased and other redunant part of my anatomy, this is unlikely to be anything like as agressive as was imagined before the op' but so far I'm in the dark.   I don't suppose that  it will be nice but there were times over the last few weeks when the news was expected to be far, far worse so I'm pretty upbeat given the circs.

Thanks to you all so much for your messages of support - you cannot know how much these mean to both Mr T and me.

I will get round to the PMs, I promise, but I have to take it easy for a bit as I've only been eating solid food for 24 hours so things are still a bit knackering.

Love to all,  Deb

Excellent! You have tubeless 3G broadband. Well Monsieur Michelin invented the tubeless tyre, so why not tubeless broadband.

That sounds like very good news. But what I still don't understand, and perhaps I'm being thick here, is why they weren't able to analyse the removed items until after you'd farted?

Is it to do with French manners? Whatever, this is how I see things unfolded, perhaps following a light luncheon of smoked horse broth with haricotes blanche...

Deb - "My compliments to the surgeon"
Deb's derriere - "PARP!" (wafts blankets to prove she's not cheating a la Petomain)
Nurse - "Ah merci madame, chef will now analyze ze uterus"
Nurse opens window, exits stage left (running) with a "zut alors!"

Or am I misunderstanding something?

Once you go into hospital, your right to privacy evaporates rather doesn't it. The day after my eldest was born, my family came to visit. The 1st question my brother asked my wife :- Did you s##t yourself? He was 28 at the time.....

Excellent news.

Although we still await news (with anticipation) of whether a follow through occurred after the initial phart, we assume that the medical imporatnce of this is relatively minor in the great scheme of things.

But do please remember that the things you discuss on CA are important to us.  And I mean it's not as though the CA community were the first to mention the apparent importance to the recovery process of farting.

Big H will, Iam sure, deliver his own inimitable take on the subject in due course,

One of the things that's never disappointed me in life is a good old fart. I mean what's the downside?

And here we have another example of their comic potential and general restorative powers. Better than Lourdes water I'd say. Anyway, I now have a mental picture of Deb remarking that there's "fire in the hole!" before knocking one off towards the boundary to the gentle applause of the medical staff and the relief of her erstwhile other half.

I have to admit I like the sound of "Madame Le Surgeon", - do you think she's fully booked next June?

I'm delighted to hear you're making progress Deb, you've had a shift and a half alright.

Deb had a bit of a frightening setback last night, just after I'd wheeled her back into her room after a pleasant day at home. She suddenly found she was passing quantities of blood. A nurse attempted to staunch the flow with no success, then a doctor ditto, so she was rushed down to theatre, where they gave her a spinal block and then operated - the surgeon taking about 10 minutes. In fact it looked more dramatic than it was - but it's easy to say that when it's not your blood! Inevitably she is still in dock, therefore, on a drip and looking a bit wan. Worse, her 3G dongle credit has now expired, so I must try and renew it in Auchan tomorrow.

Nothing's ever straightforward, is it?

"frightening setback" sounds like an understatement given what happened!  Hope everything is OK now.  Everything back crossed again, all the best to you both

For those who haven't picked up on this from Facebook, all is now back on track and I've just got home (hopefully - barring consultations and follows-up - for a while to come).  Your positive thoughts (and an emergency op' under a local) obviously worked.  Please keep 'em coming! :-* :-*
