Is this the end of civilisation as we know it? I think we should be told...

Should be some interesting sights in the South and North of the country then? I've always quite fancied seeing the northern lights.....

GLOBAL ERUPTION:  During the early hours of August 1st, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a complex global disturbance on the Earth-facing side of the sun.  Most of the sun's northern hemisphere was involved in the event, which included a long-duration C3-class solar flare, a "solar tsunami," and a massive filament eruption.  As a result of these blasts, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading toward Earth.  High-latitude geomagnetic storms and auroras are possible when the cloud arrives a few days hence.

A few years back I was in Denver Colarado for a business conference, on morning of my departure back to Europe a magnetic flare hit the area, it knocked out the check in system at the airport, instead of a short wait at the Lufthansa desk, it turned out to be a 5 hour marathon as you had to be checked in manually with the staff phoning Germany to book you in! The boarding pass was a hand written one, and caused utter confusion at security with even longer waits.

On boarding the pilot assured us they the plane was ok and had not been effected as it had protection against such events. ::)

I do believe this is how this all started

have you ever considered you maybe educationally challenged?

not wishing to be rude or disparaging, the clue is in the word, 'Northern', somehow, Reading isn't regarded as up north in any sense of the word.

Maybe elevate yourself a few dozens of height and then maybe you'll be lucky... :o

 ::)

I am aware of where the frikkin northern lights are.....

However.  You will notice, that during times of heavy solar activity, and CME's, aurora's are often visible on the South Coast (albeit far less clearly than in the scottish highlands).

And for your information, if it's north of Watford Gap, It's up north, and make no mistake.......

I'm sure Perdu will agree but The North starts much further north than that.

I prefered to think of the North as places you can get beer for less than a Quid a pint.    The trouble is inflation has happen an I don't think we have a North any more.

oi

I'm fully aware where "oop norff" is thank you sirrah

It way over yonder

up past the Heaviside layer (oops that where this thread is about to kick off from innit?)

Err No

I mean kind of, well higher up the latitudes, past Manchesterford

Higher even that Newkarshole

Oop by  that Glasscow maybe

ANYWAY

I do know  that Watford Gap, bless it's little Blue Boar is well bloody south of civilisation.

How much is a pint of "cooking" down south these days?

Peter thanks for the astrometeoric observations, could be a couple of good nights for us heathens "oop here" to get a sighting or two

I did see the Auroroa on one balmy summer evening as my lad and I were gently proceeeding afoot to the Hardwick for a few post prandial libations

Awesome to see the phenomena so far south I tell you

I'm sorry to intervene but this seems to be THE made up bu**sh** horror story of the year.  ;D

I went through a couple of astronomy related sites and they tell nothing about a big bang or something.

It's holiday time and it seems that some "journalists" make the usual headline stories just to keep people amused... same procedure as every year.

Did I mention that the world's end is due Friday next week, it's the 13th. Mark it in your diary.

That will leave just about enough time to enjoy the Persedes meteor shower in the night of the 12th/13th.

spaceweather is fine and I confess I didn't look up that site.

If it's true - and spaceweather usually leaves no doubt - then we're in for some fantastic sights in the next couple of days. Maybe not in Germany but in the UK you should head your camera up during the night.

One funny discussion I came about was at www.astrotreff.de. The thread title is roughly translated "Do have aliens enough human brain power ?" I answer that with a "clearly not" - there are far too many humans at Le Mans each year and you can clearly see they have no brain at all - aliens can't be that dumb or wait... are these aliens ???

I hope this pulls you pulse down, FS  ;D

BTW: I'm a wide field fan.

Love it, back to the old Club Arnage forum, Bol*ocks fed by buls*it with a bit of intellect infringing on more Boll*cks and Bulls*it.
I'm off to the local beach to watch the Southern Lights and see how they compare to the Northern lights. Not that I have seen the Northern lights, but I am sure the Southern lights will be an up market version of them. Can any one tell me the best time to go a watch them, should I wait till it gets dark?

PS Whats "Wide Field" ???

Two things:
1. The North starts at the M62. Anything below that is the South.
2. Have I got time to go for a swift pint of muscle relaxant at the Queens Head before the world ends?

Every time I hoped to see the Perseids meteor shower in the UK it was overcast.  :(  One night I was looking so hard I nearly fell off the footpath as I walked home from the pub.   ::)

Indeed they are, but I dont think they are switched on at the moment!

Ian, I believe hgb is refering to the hubble experiment, truly awesome

No, no, I can't pay for my own Hubble... yet. I'm trying hard... The pictures that this thing delivers are awesome. It's been dead on NASA's account a year or so ago...

I'm referring to real experience at dark places. Astrotrac (excellent UK invention) plus stopped down camera will do good too.

There was an article in www.spiegel.de which is a well respected newspaper in Germany about the hefty streams from our sun today. This should result in northern lights up 'oorth even in the summer which is very rare. And according to them it keeps on coming. Apparently, there was a break in the 11 years schedule of the sun and there are a lot cold spots on the sun's shell that cause these flares. There are quite a few astronomy sites where you can see pictures of these. Very interesting and all kudos to FS for pointing that out... I'm out too - good night all.

At the time that this alert is being written, sky watchers in Europe as far south as Germany are reporting red and green Northern Lights.

And you were telling me that on the south coast, you'd never see them!

Patchy skies 'oop here last night but enough gaps to see stars. Sadly no purdy green lights by the time I gave up and went home. I'm going out again tonight but with a hip flask this time. It got rather parky last night.

UPDATE

At the time that this alert is being written, sky watchers in Europe as far south as Germany are reporting red and green Northern Lights.

And you were telling me that on the south coast, you'd never see them!

youf of today!

firstly, the clue is in the name, Northern, so thats where they are to be seen, if there is something S I M I L A R seen down souf that its name will have to change, something catchy, like northern lights seen down souf or similar.

secondly, the krauts are reportedly seeing red and green, obviously confusing the traffic lights here.

here endeth the astro-physics lesson today.

tonite's homework, either, write no less than a 2500 word essay on:-

Distances and Magnitudes

the parallax angle for the star Sirius is 0.377"

a) find the distance to Sirius in units of (i) parsecs; (ii) light years; (iii)AU; (iv) cm.
b) determine the distance modulos for Sirius.
c) Sirius has a V apparent magnitude of -1.46. The bolometric correction for Sirius is BC=-0.09. Using the information above determine the absolute bolometric magnitude of Sirius and compare it to that of the Sun, Msun=4.76. What is the ratio of Sirius' luminousity to that of the Sun?

OR

Write your name in CAPITAL LETTERS.

a) find the distance to Sirius in units of
(i) parsecs; 2.6 A parsec is a unit of distance equal to about 3.3 light years, or 3.1 x 1016 meters
(ii) light years; 8.6 Lights travels at a finite speed of 299,792,500 metres per second which is about 9,460,000,000,000 kilometres per year.
(iii)AU; 4.6 or  543,861
(iv) cm. Silly question

b) determine the distance modulos for Sirius. The star Sirius has a magnitude of about -1.5

c) What is the ratio of Sirius' luminousity to that of the Sun?
Sirius is 8.6 lyr distant, and magnitude −1.47.
LSirius = 0.0813 · 8.62 · 10−0.4·(−1.47) = 23.3 ×
You can say that Sirius is 23 times brighter than the sun, or it radiates 23 suns.

UPDATE

CME IMPACT: As expected, a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on August 3rd.  The impact, which occurred around 1730 UT, sparked a polar geomagnetic storm.

YEsterday evening we found that our Freeview reception on BBC1 kept breaking up so I wonder if that was another side effect.   Normally our BBC 1 is rock solid.

ok to clarify UP North, anywhere south of Oslo is Down South, so you are all soft shandy drinking southerners  ;D

I live 100 miles north of Oslo and i have been looking up at the fluffy white clouds for the last 2 evenings and have yet to see as much as a twinkle, so i think the chances of you guys on the south coast seeing anything is about as good as me getting milk out of this rocking horse.

Hi Nick Thanks for the update from Norway. Here in the Southern Tip of Canada on the shores of  Lake Ontario it has been cloudy too. The light polution alone probably prevents us from seeing the display anyway.
Thanks FS for pointing this out for us. Have especially enjoyed HGB contribution to this thread.

Went out tonight to see the great light display, could not see much as I lay on the grass looking up in to the great wide younder.

No lights - sh1t, but kept hearing this in the distance,

and it came how many miles away?     ;D

Although I missed it, the wife said that there was a very good shooting star show on Saturday night, which was exceptionaly clear down here. Hopefully it will clear again towards the end the week.

my favs are the hemroids shower, though they are later on in October and you get a better view down under in the Southern Hemisphere ;D

Hi FS
Dare I ask what a hemroids shower is ??? Is this one of your Smelling errors?
Or are we washing our bum :o Or could it be one more astronomical event ;D
