Title: Young lads @ Le Mans
Post by: adinsen on May 07, 2010, 02:42:19 pm
In 2008, two of my sons (then 8 and 10 yrs) and I went to Le Mans first time. It was great. One of the best experiences was Friday evening, walking the campsite (BSJ) to check out cool cars.

Passing Pistonheads' enclosure and the bar tent, my boys start asking questions about why people are drunk... I try to explain the best I can. Then in front the bar they notice one guy standing with a large pint of beer in one hand, no trousers on, p*ssing while drinking!

Boy one: He's got no pants on, dad!
Boy two: He's peeing and drinking, dad!
Dad: Well yessss, errrm people do strange stuff when they're drunk... Now come on boys here's a cool car!

A little later:

Boy one: Have you been drunk too, dad?
... !!!

Walking on, we passed a group of Alfa Romeos and a Ferrari 355, all red, parked in a circle. The gentlemen with the cars waved us over. We had a short chat and then they asked what car the boys found to be the coolest. I translated into Danish, and my boys - being socially competent - blushed: They obviously didn't want to make the Alfa-owners angry... finally they confessed: The Ferrari was the coolest of them.

The owner stepped forward, saying "That's mine, come on" and my two sons were put in the drivers' and the passengers seat. Engine was started, and they spent a great minute listening to the sound, the greater one dipping the pedal gently, enoying the splendid interior and the nice leather seats!

Wonderful memory!

Only thing is: I'VE NEVER SAT IN THE DRIVERS' SEAT OF A FERRARI WITH THE ENGINE ON  >:D

If everything goes well, we'll be returnig to Le Mans this year!  ;D

Thats the spirit of Le Mans. On year at the drivers parade there was a display of Corvettes. And as a friend of mine is a great fan we asked the (american) owner if we could take some pics.
Then he invited us to sit in his car to have our photos taken. Great fun.
But try to bring two girls age 15 and 17. this realy make it a full time job as a bodyguard beeing at Le Mans.

As a child I just loved Aston Martins, partly because of James Bond, but more so cos my Dad loved them too.  I have great memories of lusting over V8's at motor shows in the 70's.  Like many of us I aimed to have the car of my dreams by the time I was 40, and 9 years ago at the age of 39 I achieved it.  Now, the old girl may not be perfect but she does always get admiring looks everywhere she goes  and I'm more than happy to let youngsters jump into the drivers seat at the slightest opportunity,  most look for approval from Dad or Mum first but soon climb in.  I know what it was like to admire these great cars and being lucky enough to own one (through hard work,  no silver spoon or wealthy parents for me), and it is great to be able to share her with other admirers!

The point is, never be afraid to chat with true enthusiastic owners of great cars,  they are usually more than happy to lift the bonnet or open the car up for you or your kids.

She'll be in Parking Blanc for both LM 24 and Classic,  as always!

I'm sure the Gimp, Rex and many others would be willing to help body guarding to allow you some time to enjoy the LM experience. ;)

My nephew came with us for the first time in 2011 he was 8 at the time,( his dad had been attending for the last 9 years ). We arrived as always for first thing Monday morning, sent a group out for supplies whilst we put the tents up, they promptly returned half way through with stock of beer, bread, and basics also some panache for the little un  ;D . We all got on it, including the Nephew during the day ( knocking back the panache ). It got to around 1900 hrs and his dad said to him " come on lad time for bed " only to be greeted with a completely out of character " no dad I am staying up with the boys "  ;D followed by a slightly Bolshy walk back into the marquee. The nephew was then asked how many panaches he had drunk, he quite proudly stated  "7 or maybe 8 " :P . A quick check of the bottles confirmed our suspicions 1.5% alcohol. Drunk at the age of 8 ( we changed the panaches after that for 0.5% ), but now there is no way we can go to Le Mans without him,he is a little legend in the making  :) :)
