One of the excellent films shown was "Nimrod the mighty warrior" Aston Martin return to le mans 1982. I don't know if it commercially available but it was good. Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Fran on January 26, 2010, 01:04:33 am Admittedly its based on a cartoon character, but I think Michel Vaillant should appear on the list too!

Two of the feedback movies I know already but did not find them to buy yet. So if there are movies that should be on the list I'm glad to hear the titles of those. So far you would add: - Nimrod - The mighty warrior: http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/296513 (http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/296513) by Paul Fisher, - Michel Vaillant : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Vaillant_%28film%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Vaillant_%28film%29) features shots of Le Mans 2002, --> ordered - Jaguar at Le Mans 54/5/6/7/8 - Triumph 61/62 - "A fast drive in the country" by James Coburns: only on VHS? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fast-Drive-Country-History-Mans/dp/B00008T6TB (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fast-Drive-Country-History-Mans/dp/B00008T6TB) - Speed Tribe: http://www.amazon.de/Speed-Tribe/dp/B0000696NK/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_2 (http://www.amazon.de/Speed-Tribe/dp/B0000696NK/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_2) featuring Le Mans 2001 - Licence to Le Mans: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Licence-To-Le-Mans-DVD/dp/B002KQHVW2 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Licence-To-Le-Mans-DVD/dp/B002KQHVW2) Movie about Lord Drayson at Le Mans 2009 --> ordered I will try to get these, buy them, watch them and then include them in my list! Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: baszero on January 26, 2010, 08:39:52 am I forgot Speed Tribe (see first post on the list), I ordered that one long time ago but did not receive it yet.
Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: geoffd on January 26, 2010, 09:09:02 am There are also the two fly on the wall style dvd's about Rollcentre - "Lap of the Gods" and "Chasing the Dream".
Not really movies, but both are great watching if you support the "garagiste" style teams. Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Bob U on January 26, 2010, 03:38:55 pm A great insight into the Mclaren F1's first time at Le Mans with some wonderful incar footage of Andy Wallace doing his stuff.
BTW Rick, have you transfered by VHS copy onto DVD yet? http://www.0-60mag.com/online/?p=16484 Watching it on the link I notice that they have changed the first lap music. On the original it is "Ain't no Brakeman on this train" by John Mayle. A lot better than the Techno crap that has replaced it Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Matt Harper on January 27, 2010, 01:09:46 am La Ronde Infernale

Not really movies, but both are great watching if you support the "garagiste" style teams. The list summarized in the initial post is actually only showing the delta to what I have already covered on my web site. Thanks for confirming! Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: baszero on January 27, 2010, 01:53:23 pm La Ronde Infernale Thanks, but I already listed that movie on http://baszero.ch/racing/movies/Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Lazy B'stard on January 27, 2010, 03:13:03 pm How about the Ford Film ' A hard days fight' from the 1969 race. Classic.
I heard there was to be a new big budget hollywood film being made this year with some big stars lined up?? Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Fisherman on January 27, 2010, 07:49:54 pm Licence to Le Mans was released in the UK on DVD on Monday (25th).

I'm curious whether that's a good one... Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Fisherman on January 27, 2010, 11:08:31 pm Play.com tell me they've dispatched so hopefully over the weekend I should be able to report back on whether it's any good and the extent of Tiffany Dell's annoyingness.
Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Martini...LB on January 27, 2010, 11:19:33 pm Sorry, but perhaps a little naive, I always quite like Tiff.
Sorry, but no I am not, so there, each to his own I suppose. I am told that people like to wrestle coated in butter or strap crabs to Mr Willie! What is stranger than that? >Martini...LB Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Barry on January 28, 2010, 10:35:16 am Sorry, but perhaps a little naive, I always quite like Tiff. I don't dislike him, but when you watched this on the TV, they repeated his intro every episode, got a bit tiring seeing the same clip 6 times. There was a lot of padding/repartition in the series, a good visit to the cutting room should solve the problem. Unlike the 2 Rollacenter films, this seemed to have been made for a wider audience, and suffered for it, ALMS soap, rather than a drama. Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Lorry on January 28, 2010, 02:00:37 pm Mine has arrived - I just need to pluck up the courage to watch it.
The other one that might be considered for the list is "Diaries of a Gentleman". I think this chap was touring France in his Bentley in the 1920s and came across Le Mans at about the time of the race, so they persuaded him to have a go, and I think he came fourth. He stopped to dress for dinner, of course. Several of the old favourites have not been released on DVD, like Coburn's Fast Drive, plus there are a couple about Jaguar in the late 80s, and two videos of the 1988 race (three actually but two are almost identical) [/anorak off - emergency status] There seems to be a big gap from 1969 to 1980 Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: baszero on January 29, 2010, 11:04:01 pm I received "Licence to Le Mans" on 4 DVDs this week. Absolutely great I think.
Thanks for all the infos, very appreciated.... http://baszero.ch/racing/2009/11/license-to-le-mans/ (http://baszero.ch/racing/2009/11/license-to-le-mans/) Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Lorry on January 30, 2010, 08:23:56 pm I don't dislike him, but when you watched this on the TV, they repeated his intro every episode, got a bit tiring seeing the same clip 6 times. I totally agree about the repeats and padding, so it is a bit slow, and I'm worried that Lord D is becoming a nausiating little pr**k. It started when Tiff (who seems to already become one) asked who the previous owner of his house was - Princess Michael, and then they show the kiddies in the fencing room. Mind you with that amount of loot, I'd have gone for Le Mans first, and then bought the peerage. There was a lot of padding/repartition in the series, a good visit to the cutting room should solve the problem. Unlike the 2 Rollacenter films, this seemed to have been made for a wider audience, and suffered for it, ALMS soap, rather than a drama. Having said that, even with the one eye, he's not much slower than his hotshoe partner, and there's some excellent footage, But I might have to edit it for June. Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Fisherman on March 02, 2010, 10:03:39 pm I watched 'The Cat Came Back' last night, overall it was a bit disappointing, mainly because the subtitle 'The story of jaguar's dramatic return to Le Mans' isn't really an accurate description of the content. There is some coverage of the 50s races but the superb 'Jaguar at Le Mans 1954-58' covers that much better, there's then a very large chunk of the running time taken up by footage of the TWR XJS's running in the European Touring Car Championship in 1985, particularly the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone before a relatively brief look at the 80's Le Mans campaigns and finally a bit about Jaguar in F1. All this is fine as a look at the overall motorsport history of Jag, it's just that the way the DVD is marketed is a bit dishonest.
If anyone has seen both I'd be interested in whether 'The Jaguar's Roar' or 'Roaring to Victory' is a better look at the 80's Jags at Le Mans Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Lorry on December 03, 2010, 02:38:49 pm I've found another one.
Renault filmed 1977, probably on Super8, with one of the mechanics wives as production team. Poor quality (most from this era are) but still evidence of how it was 33 years ago. There is also a film of their efforts in 1966 with the 1300cc Renault Gordini. Sadly, I have to own up to watching Renault TV on Satellite (only the once, honest), but its still being repeated - look for "Film Club" Title: Re: Movies about Le Mans Post by: Boorish Grobian on December 03, 2010, 05:19:49 pm I don't know if you have these, but I assume so, all of the Videovision films from the eighties, they were usually a one hour highlight package of that years race. I used to have all of them on VHS, but recently gave them to a good friend who has become interested in the Group C era. They may be available through Duke. Also there's some good footage on Youtube of the 1978 race. Looks like it was probably a Elf or Michelin film.

A very rare movie and saw it a good few years ago at an arthouse but it never got repeated or issued on DVD. http://www.timeout.com/film/reviews/79910/23-58.html Its about some guys wanting to rob the ticket office while everybody else is watching the race. ......................now thats an idea eh ?
